I have decided to color and streak my hair this evening. As I write I smell
horrendously and am getting vibes that I am probably going to end up
seriously regretting this.
I remember once as a young teen dying my light brown hair blond-blond and
ending up this fluorescent orange (this was long before it was considered
cool).
Anybody else here hair disasters? I'm hoping I can find a way to blame this
on epilepsy.
How'd it come out?
Julie
Good one, Dona! Can't blame this one on epilepsy (too bad, right?).
Barb
Blame it on Tegretol, Dona (even if you don't take it). It has so many
horrid side-effects that another one can be added without anyone
noticing.

Malcolm (coming up to his first 24 hours without any pills at all!)
Before anyone jumps my case I have simple partials that feel like crap, but
it's gotten the point I can't even remember how to open the car door because
of the pills.
I used to love dressing up. What happened to me? I feel like I look like
Elvira, my face feels like it's about to crack off. I have way to much hair,
which by the way looks great, thank you very much. I wish there was some way
I could just send my hair and have my fat behind stay home.
I can do this. I have a wonderful career, a great house, superlative kids
and special friends, and will be able to spend an evening with my ex and his
family and his ugly skinny girlfriend with ease. Right?
Well me and Xanax will.
For exactly the same reason as you. Funny you should mention car doors
because last week I tried to open the laboratory up using my car's
remote zapper. I want my memory back.
I'm doing fine and I've got 2 hours to go. But if you try it, you will
try it sensibly, won't you? Coming off crack looks like a doddle
compared to coming off epilepsy meds.
BTW: I have a theory that Tegretol causes water retention because
without it I have solved the UK water shortage in just 24 hours.

Oh, I don't deny that the Tegretol / benzo combination works. But do you
like the side effects? Quality of life and I'm prepared to take the

He gave me a big prescription to Xanax for taking if a set of the simple
partials hit. If I do get one and take a couple of doses of Xanax it seems
to stop the cluster in its tracks.
The memory problems on the Zonegran are getting pretty bad, I mean things
like does the red light mean go or stop, which is the quarter and which is
the dime, where am I going, and dear God where do I live.
If I can get reassurence that the partials will stay where they've been for
the past 13 years, I think I'm better off just dealing with them.
Of course, I will do this along with my neurologist.
It looks like the boys have taken over this thread about hair dressing
again. I wonder when they are going to start a thread about sports, cars,
etc.
Sorry I cannot be of any more help.

>It looks like the boys have taken over this thread about hair dressing

No sports. Pastimes maybe, such as climbing, sailing, gardening,
swimming and programming, but you'll notice they're all solitary
pastimes. Team games don't seem to be my strong point, and cup final day
is an excuse to go shopping whilst the streets are empty.
Cars are for getting from A to B. For me they have no other function.
And I can't really pass judgement on hair colour as Valproate made most
of mine fall out long ago. It would be nice to have some hair to colour.
So no, the boys haven't taken over this thread, and it's completely
available for discussion about hairdressing. I was just chatting to
Dona :)

Dunno about water retention Malcolm. I've been on 1600mg for years (just
reduced to 1200) and I can only drink about half a glass of anything and I
have to run to the toilet.
Best of luck with going off the meds. Hope it all goes well for you.

There are lots of people who can use Tegretol or its Slow Release
versions XR, CR or Retard, without ill effects for seizure control. I've
used Tegretol CR since 1994 alone and With Frisium (Clobazam) at reduced
dose since ~1996 to the present. Last 2 Complex Partial seizures I had
were Dec. 1997, and June 1998.
Latter dates only matter since at onset in 1993 they suggested I
should expect 'success' as being measured at 2-3 seizures per *month,
based on MRIs and Other tests done at onset.
Don't use Tegretol with Grapefruit Juice, Alcohol (preferably), or Upset
stomach remedies. Don't skip doses (miss any) or Double up on them, with
Tegretol. Follow rates the Doctor Prescribed and don't tinker with them
unless you've discussed that with them.
Those probably could be written for *All Anti Ep Medications (except
possibly the Grapefruit only applies to One Family of AEDs). There's an
Acid that is not present in other Citrus Juices that conflicts with the
Operation of the Carbamazepine. Use Food, Milk or other Juices (I use Apple
Apricot or Apple Peach I can get here year round.) G./
**G* That's good to have. I had finally got Ativan (Lorazepam) sublingual
after a couple of severe Complex Partial seizures (affect Temporal Lobes in
my case).
Having it with me gave me less Fear of a Surprise Seizure and more
Control when the few I had, moving toward full control, still produced
Auras that warned me one might be on the way.
Without it (Lorazapam), at the time, I was afraid to go out far,
without fear that a Surprise Seizure might hit and I'd wake up in Emerg.,
instead of on a bus, on the way home...
It helped me get the last 10% of control, as we fine-tuned the
Medications levels. G./

**G* ARE Above Memory Symptoms from the Zonegran (do you think? I don't
know). MY Memory problems were from Damage to my Right Temporal Lobe-- if
Either of those (Temporal Lobes) are damaged and the Source of where the
seizures start from, *that would affect Memory learning and functions,
without it being the *medication.
(I've seen Tonic Clonic included sometimes within Complex Partial type
szrs. and other times in Grand Mal, but if you're getting more Complex
Partial type auras as you get nearer control, some of the same Memory
Problems during the szr. or between seizures might be related to Temporal
Lobe firings? or mis-firing?)
Maybe there are other places where the Memory thing is as profoundly
affected.
I had been under the impression that a lot of my Memory Things (which
predated my seizures by 14 years), were Not (at first) related to the
Seizures I was having, but because of the older Encephalitis Damage that I
had already adjusted to from 1979 to 1993. G/
That's why I wondered from your Earlier notes (and some from others too),
if we might be Blaming a Pill or Treatment for a condition that is Really
Part of the Source of the Seizures, and not (necessarily) the Fault of the
Pills.
(Note *I* haven't used Zonegran -- but maybe someone Else HERE can give
us information on that?)
I've used Dilantin for 1-2 years, Tegretol CR from 1994 to Now, and
Frisium (Clobazam) was added with Reduced Tegretol CR about 1995/6 when
Tegretol alone stopped giving me the Full Control I had from 1993-5.
In MY case I think the Frisium was relatively Recent in Canada Approvals,
while Tegretol in various types is about 40? years old. I think they're
even using it now for some Heart and Stroke patients since some of the
things it controls seems to help some of them too.)
But I wondered if the Memory thing *might not be so much from a
particular pill, but from the source of the seizures. There might be
Something on Zonegran under http://efa.org website that has a Medications
Website. Others have posted some other sites that also describe Medicine
Side effects etc. And your Pharmacy might be able to give you the www
address of the Maker of the Zonegran, where any possible side effects, or
things 'to watch for' might be listed. Hope that helps, some. G.R.

so, are temporal lobe seizures the only ones having influence on memory?
blaming a pill maybe often seems the first good explanation - which may
turn out as no *good* explanation at all. i havn't even considered, that
my memory and concentration problems might have something to do with the
seizures or the source of the seizures.
Raist
My 8-month pregnany ex-cousin started having contractions, and for a bit
there we thought she might be having the baby in the middle of the luau.
And I swung back and forth from feeling foxy to feeling like a little girl
playing dressup, waiting for Mommy to yell at me for getting into her
makeup.
And I don't know much (anything) about whether other Parts of the Brain
can have affects or either Short Term or Longer term memory. I DO know (I
think!) that if the effects are Only on Short Term learning or Memory, that
that's often caused in a different part of our Brain than if the effects are
on Longer Term Memories or Learning that we might have had Before the
seizures started. (E.G. Miss Main was my Grade 3 Teacher, Mr. Evans Grade
6. But if I got a series of words or numbers during some of my 'Psych
Tests' and was asked to either repeat them, or (*worse) Repeat them in
Reverse order, of 5 numbers or words, I'd end at the second one.)
Your earlier posts and a few others? had posted wrt. seizures starting in
the Temporal Lobes. My Seizure Focus is the Right T.Lobe, and that's where
most of the auras etc. described on the http://efa.org and links from Dave
or Julie's sites match what I experienced from 1993-7+
If you can't find much under Temporal Lobe Seizures, try Complex Partial
Seizures. The First name there was the older term that is now often grouped
inside the types of seizures included in the Second one. While some of the
Temporal Lobe Seizures can just start and include an Aura and then pass,
Before they're more fully controlled, most of them progress (generalize) and
can lead to loss of Awareness or Consciousness. Many of mine (1995-7) I
could wander off, potentially into danger, or do strange things (like
boarding a bus I didn't need!!).
I *think some of the other seizure types might include those types of
'strange' behaviours, but Many are specific to one of the Main seizure
types. So by looking at our reactions during a seizure, in front of a
Flashing light, or Sounds at varying frequencies, the Doctors can often tell
where the likely source (focus) is of a particular seizure.
Once a Location of the Seizure Focus is found, different treatments or
medications might be used. One that might work for a Grand Mal type might
or might not work for our Complex Partial or Simple Partial seizure types.
At my worst (even before some of the seizures started, but after
Encephalitis I had in Right Temporal Lobe), I couldn't follow simple
instructions or use the bus I'd used for 4 years, without having written
instructions to follow. After some time (months to years) and once seizures
started and were treated, I was able to recall more and more of the short
term memory types of things I had lost originally. But much of the 1980s
to mid 1990s are lost in the Fog of Forgetfulness, if that's a term. G./

Erm, who said *anything at all* about banning it? Somehow I seem to have

I'm not the only person experiencing side effects with Teggies, or there

hmm. you make me think of a theory here ... the focus of my simple
partials is my language center (or some place near it. however, my
language is affected while i am having my simple partials). it *could*
mean, that the linguistic input i get during a seizure is disturbed and,
thus, not properly processed. and stuff that isn't properly processed
can`t be put into memory, right? the tricky thing about my simple partials
is, that i often don't realize them although i'm fully conscious in this
time. ok, this might be a wild and completely wrong theory ;-).

i have the habit of doing nothing during my partials. then, again, they
are simple, not complex.
does it happen, that there is more than one focus for partials? i have
experienced such, that influence my language and such, that have motoric
effects (shaking of my right arm). i'm fully aware in both cases. each has
a typical pattern. the only similarity of them is, that they tend to
generalize and end up in a tonic-clonic.
on occations, when i show strange behaviour (acting like in trance,
realizing what is going on, but not being able to do anything about it; a
state that i'm usually in for several hours)i blame it on the pills -
sometimes the easiest explanation saves you from thinking too much about
all the stuff ;-).

**** If you haven't looked too, at site above or others, sometimes there's
information under Absence Seizures that are really part of Simple Partial
Seizures, but that might apply also.
(I've had lots of those both while uncontrolled but also as I got nearer
full control. I STILL sometimes find notes that I wrote while 'away'

***G* I don't know. Maybe someone else 'here' knows, or there might be
more information on the Ep. Foundation website (above). /
as many functions, liguitic abilities are laterized. almost all
right-handers (~95%) and over half (~60%) left-handers have their language
represented in the left hemnisphere. it's interesting that ~20% of the
left-handers have their language represented *bilateral*. this rarely (or
never) is the case with right-handers.
i think i recall, that there are three language areas: broca's area in the
frontal lobe, the store for language production. the second is wernicke's
area in the parietal lobe. here is the store for interpreting auditory
speech. the last is the angular gyrus which is some kind of "in between"
of the parietal, temporal an occipital lobes and associates information
from them.
i never thought i could make use of this knowledge after the class ...

my neuro calls some of my simple partials also "focal-motoric-seizures".
these SP don't feel like an aura at all, though they can generalize (they
rarely do). the other type of SP "only" affect my language, though they
sometimes become an aura. then everything happens quite the way you
discribed it. strange sensation, sliding away - until the lights are

A bit late, this, but here's my story.
Firstly, I'm a Yorkshire Tyke - the definition of a Yorkshireman is a Scot
with the generosity squeezed out. That must remembered when - if - the
following is read.
I had a brain scan on a Friday morning. On Saturday evening we were invited
to dinner with my publisher. I dressed appropriately (insofar as I can, I'm
no fashion plate) and coloured my hair using one of the several bottles I'd
bought to store.
On Monday the surgeon rang to invite me for brain surgery on Tuesday. I
went. They said Id have to have my head shaved - well of COURSE I'd need my
head shaved. I was doing some odd things but I could still work that out.
When I came round, with tubes everywhere, only half my head was shaved - the
one with the staples in it, the other half was covered with matted, bloody,
sweaty hair. I protested and asked why. I was told that they didn't think
I'd want all my hair off.
I mean, as if I'd want to walk around with half a head of hair!
So I insisted that the rest was shaved off. The nurse who did it couldn't
understand why I wanted all my lovely dark curls (natural, uncontrollable
curls) off.
I looked at the floor and saw all those lovely curls. My only thought was:
"That cost me £3.99".
The other stored bottles are still in the bathroom cupboard - 3 x £3.99 =
???
MALCOLM!!!
What's 3 x £3.99?

Malcolm
er?
Didn't I make myself clear?
Do you have a website which includes your picture? It would be nice to know
what you look like too :-)

Yes, but it's come in for a bit of flak because I'm colour-blind and
some people have said it's too vivid and difficult to read. Who cares -
it's my web-site and it's set up for my high res monitor as well.
I was working on it until I got made redundant last year, but since then
I've been too busy moving and decorating and starting a new job that I
haven't got round to doing anything to it, si it's very OOD.
There's a picture of a frog on www.mtdomain.demon.co.uk, so that will
do.
BUT.........
I'VE FINISHED MY REPORTS AND I NEVER WANT TO SEE AN UNFIXED TEXT BOX
EVER AGAIN IN MY LIFE!!!!! The school report template is for MS Word
(not my favorite) and the textboxes seem to work like hyperlinks - hit
the wrong bit of the box and the box shoots off to another part of the
file and takes an hour to navigate it back. I ended up using the report
writing program I made, saving them in ANSI using Textpad and pasting
them in with added comments. PAIN!
So now I'm off to eat a megagiant strawberry from my garden, as I've
kept it as a promised present for just this moment :P

I'm prepared to give it a try ...

No it won't.

Enjoy!
Truly an even to be celebrated. I think I'll open a bottle of bubbly and
raise a glass to you :-)
Mary
anything for a reason to celebrate!

There is a fairy tale about a frog and someone kissing the frog then the
frog became a prince or princess and they lived happily ever :-)

Take care.
Bye,
Marco

I went to it and found you. The Real You (I hope).
<swoon>
Mary
You did kiss the frog picture on your own computer screen, didn't you?? :-)
NO! Really?
Well I never did :-)
Mary
(the frog was a handsome prince who'd had a spell put on him, the spell was
broken when the princess kissed him - I don't need to kiss Malcolm to make
him handsome, it might turn him toadwise ... )
I've been working with computers since the time you never touched a screen
or it would be damaged. So no, I didn't.

Don't forget the other 2 fairy tales:
In one the princess turns into a frog herself!
In the other the princess gets warts on her lips!
Those were obviously American frogs. Americans don't have princesses - oh
yes they do of course! Honey princesses, peach princesses, Internet
princesses ...
:-)
Mary
I admit to drooling :-)

Hi Dona,
I'm normally dark brown, almost black haired. Tonight I just had my wife dye
my hair blonde and now she is asking my permission to get some dye to colour
my hair back to it's normal shade. It's VERY blonde.
Don't know why I coloured it....mid life crisis? Blame it on the epilepsy I
think might be a good idea.
Darryl.
I like the idea of it. Trouble is, in UK, you'd possibly get unwelcome
approaches in public lavatories ...

Sounds good to me. I like coloured hair.
I particularly like very blonde short hair on black people and pale blue
curls on anyone.

That's a blue rinse, I assume?

Malcolm
No. I haven't seen one of those for very many years.
I mean the sky blue which several young people sport.

Oh, the Sky Blue Movies Channel! I don't have Sky, and I'm not into
sport, but I've heard about it.
Can't someone put a parental lock on your TV to stop you watching it?
--
Malcolm
Malcolm, I don't watch television.
Why?
We don't have a television.
When we did have a television it was a 14" screen, monochrome and we could
get four channels. We had it for about three years before we realised that
we hadn't watched it for months and were paying the licence for nothing.
£28 for nothing for a Tyke is unacceptable!
