Never mind. I got the background done and, what's more important, imo, I
got started. Must admit I was a bit scared what workin on canvas real
canvas would be like. Like my brain knows "what the heck" cuz I know
rationally even if I should mess up at the first try, well, then I get
me some grounding (dunno if that's what ya call the special kinda paint
you use for the groundwork esp. on canvas in English) and start again.
Still ... I was scared. And it worked. Working on canvas is sooooooooooo
cool! :-)))))
It's not rainin that much and maybe the thunderstorm will end up
somewhere else. If it does, I'll sure be out on the terrace again in no
time. If not, well, now I know for d*mn sure I wanna get back to this
paintin asap! :-)))
I'm very happy. I forgot how happy messin with paints can make me - even
if I start out edgy and close to anxiety and what not else. :-)))

something that you use to prime the canvas - otherwise w/oil, some kind
of primer, yes? We are glad you are working on something that is a good
thing, but somehow it made us scared when we opened it - I think we have
a want to do something like this, too - yes, we even have tasks lined up
to do, but we are scared. We have been having a scared inner feeling,
and it relates to we don't know what. Why are we scared? We get scared
now, and we don't have a clue why. It's like t (shadowscribe) said -
maybe someone still sleeps, maybe it's someone we aren't used to being,
out these days - we can't understand what is going on w/us, we don't
have this feeling much, and we can't understand it - sometimes we get so
anxious we have to jump away from people when we are talking on the
telephone -

it's acryl. and I guess I like it (lil's happy cuz she got things her
way- she wanted the human figure in the paintin to wear a green t-shirt
so it got one ;-)).
oh and thanks for helpin out with the word. primer makes sense,
wordwise, I mean. :-)
me, I often dunno why I'm scared or if it's me who's anxious or rather
somebody else. But I aint sure one needs to know the details to try and
change it. I go by trial error - maybe that would work for ya, too?
though, of course, at times I cant find the strength/energy to do
somethin and get rid of the fear/anxiety. then I either try to sleep
(which can work with fear but never with anxiety - for me, that is) or I
try and read some.

am gonna be doin similar today cos sons out half day,
but not sure if ill be doin some sketchin or paintin, i need
to do some sketchin for my head, but im not sure im wantin
to cos i dont think bout wot i sketch, just do it so not sure
wot might come out if i did that right now. will see.
now a stupid queston. see like i said before i never did
any classes at all n i have no idea how ppl are 'spose' to paint,
or any rules at all *grin* so im wondrin if theres some kinda
sciencey reson for usin primer on the cavas. cos i never have :P
n so far its seemed to work fine heh. but i do tend to thin oils
insted for background. so im kinda intriged.

dunno. as we dont have enough space for many things here and as the SO
wanted to contribute to the farewell gift the painting is I bought the
canvas ready made and primed. the only thing I learned at the store is
that you need the primeing for the oils but not for the acryls. if your
paintings done your way turn out with a shinin quality of the colours,
I'D say you are okay. cuz they said that what's the priming's there for.
without it, the oil would sorta melt into the canvas and not be shinin
at all.
sorry I dunno anythin bout the science and the rules of paintin either.
I just do it. *ahem*

I don't know why they said no priming for acrylics, because you do prime
for acrylics, only with a different medium. You use gesso for acrylics.
Maybe that's what they meant at the art store, that you don't use
primer, the oil-based primer. The gesso for acrylics forms a smooth,
watertight surface on which to paint.
There is another really great thing you can do w/gesso. You can take
colored tissue paper (like for wrapping gifts or making paper flowers or
something) and gesso - and take a small cardboard box, a glass bottle,
or anything at all, really, and then you tear or cut the tissue paper
into shapes and kind of use the paper as paint strokes, held on by
painted-on gesso. The gesso turns the tissue clear and shiny like
stained glass. You can even write on it later, like with India ink, and
it is very beautiful and long lasting. You can make beautiful little
gifts this way for next to no money.

thanks for the info. dunno how watertight my paintings are cuz I never
"tested" them for it. I do know, though, that the effect they described
at the shop - i.e. acryls turn out shinin without any kinda primin, even
when paintin of the surface without anything but the acrly themselves -
is true. hm ... do you think the gesso would render the material
watertight enough for a paintin to survive at least a bit of rain while
paintin?! ;-)))
