Feel pretty good right now. A little tired and a little anxious from
such an active day with people. No nightmares last night. Our thrpst
refered us to a place to go for some support. It's an ICCD Clubhouse. So
we had orientation this morning. We went to that, and they were very
nice. After orientation, they asked us if we'd stay the day, so we did.

They were very friendly. It's a lot to explain, but we joined, and they
kept us very busy, but only because we wanted to be. (You don't have to
do anything you don't want to, and you're not pressured to do so. You
can come in anytime they're open, you don't have to attend regularly.)
It was a really good experience. We're going back tomorrow and probably
Friday, and then continuing some days next week. We're so excited about
it. Think this is one place we actually do like. :)

Do you have to keep getting referrals from your t or can you just show
up when you want to?

Slunky said he's a member now. I think that means he gets to show up when he
wants to. If I understand it right, Slunky maybe gets to help out there and
he "belongs". :)

Well, what actually happened is they asked if we wanted to stay, and we
said we had to go pick up slunkette from school (because we did). So we
left, walked one building away and called someone to pick her up for us,
and then we went back.

No, just needed one referal. Could've probably applied without a referal
too, but this just sped things up. Now we're a member for life. We even
have a little card so we can go to clubhouses in other states or even
other countries.

Yes! We do feel like we belong, and we do get to help out. It's member
run. There are only nine staff members for the entire place. We feel
like we have a purpose there. We aren't just a "client" or a "patient".

We didn't know either. When someone explained it to us two years ago,
they didn't do a very good job. We thought it was some kind of work
house, but it's not.

We'll have to ask tomorrow, but there are people at the place we go to
that are there to train to open a clubhouse in California. Not sure
where though. (The clubhouse we go to is one of the places they train
other clubhouses at.)

Yes, but we had a bad day today. Nothing about the clubhouse (except
when they had lunch, and we went to get some, then became indredibly
distressed about eating and didn't eat). We had a flashback while we
were there, and just couldn't get over it, and didn't talk about it, and
tried not to cry, and kept telling everyone we were ok even though we
weren't. We couldn't even get any work done. Couldn't function at all,
and it was very frustrating.

Anyways, skills training went ok this morning. We didn't get a chance to
talk to our thrpst about our concerns because we had to cover two groups
worth of material. :( We know she's trying to shift things to DBT. She's
already planning on changing our individual sessions like she said she
wouldn't, and she's going to start changing the phone calls me make to
her from support calls into skills coaching calls. (She sort of did that
today.) We don't like this, but she's just trying to help. She even said
today that her plan is that maybe in six months to start us in the DBT
group instead of individual skills training.

At this place, there's 36 "standards" that the Clubhouse has to abide by
to be called an ICCD Clubhouse, and one of them is that the clubhouse is
not a place for traditional thrpy or med management.

Here you're not required to do anything, but if you're not going to do
anything, what's the point in even showing up? You aren't required to
show up, so really, everyone that comes wants a responsibility and work
to do. Yesterday, we were so mixed up we could hardly do anything, but
we still managed to change the calendar to October and clean a little.

but we didn't agree to this except the one extra visit a week for skills
training. She said the rest would be the same, but she's changing
everything. We're smart enough to see that. We're just waiting for the
day when she rolls out the no contact rule for twenty-four hours after
c*tting. It's going to happen, and then we'll quit.

Well, since we're the only client she's teaching DBT to directly, we're
at least going to be experience for her.

Ok, but it's so frustrating to be seeing our thrpst for a whole year,
and then she wants to change things entirely and against what we wanted

Well. Don't think the DBT is necessarily a problem - suspect that if
we'd had it (in a safe-enough context, and frankly, we never had one
of those until Usenet) when we were younger and before lots of other
stuff, would have been useful. We *do* think it'd be a good idea to
educate your tpist on power dynamics, because the way I read this, it
seems likely she's not realising how important those are.

Is reasonable for her to persuade, to make her preference clear, to
decline to do stuff she's not comfortable with. It *isn't good enough
for her to decide for you what you need (even if she's right!), or to
be unwilling to make the transition in a way which respects your
needs.

(Sometimes people see the dramatic needs, and want to help those so
much that they don't realise that the normal, undramatic needs are
*as* important; or don't realise that their attempts to help the
dramatic needs could possibly be contrary to the more ordinary needs.
That can mean that they see where a helpful end point, or at least
mid-point, would be, and forget that the journey matters, too.)

From what we've read and learned so far in DBT, dissociation and
"hearing voices" are "problem *behavoirs*" and choices we make.

We don't know what those are. Oh, you mean like dynamics of her power,
right?

we think you should talk about this with her. if you can't bring it up
in session, then write her an email and say it there and say you need

It was helpful to just be someplace where people were saying hi and

Then try to think generically. What would help in those moments? A
quiet room alone? Someone to just listen to you ramble? A blanket to
hide under? Distraction? Just brainstorm stuff in general then see if
any of it is even possible in that setting. That is skills training
that will work! *wry grin* Even if you can't think of what might work,
try to think of what might seem like it might possibly some day work
and try _that_! Just keep trying different things. Even if you just
try them in your head to see if they would help.

If it helps, try to put into term of asd. What might someone _here_
do or say that might help?

Then, once you think you have an idea tell them 'if you see this
happening, try x' They really do want to help so giving them something
to do will help. Plus, it might really work and that would be GREAT!

Oh man, this is so cool! I remember being inpt and having the
absolutely best intern. He and we would just chat and talk and 'be'
together. It was so helpful! Then once, when some of us were freaking
out and went into the 'quiet room' to be safe he came and sat in the
doorway and just sat there. Like a witness or something :) I would

very powerful imo.

Sounds about right for amount to do on a day like that.

Simon reminds me of a british name. maybe because of the famous simon on
American Idol. I like it. Especially for when they are little. I like
Nathaniel too. Oh and Daniel but i don't like Danny for short or Dan.
Would rather the full pronunciation. Hmmm, I have lots of names i like.
I met a girl recently named 'Tuesday'. I like that name for a girl.

Well, we don't know where you are exactly, but there are clubhouses in
Boulder, Greenley, Grand Junction, Littelton, Fort Collins, and Wheat

No pressure to do more. We were asked if we wanted to help sort clothes
that came in for a donation to the thrift store (the clubhouse runs a
small thrift store so members can afford clothes, and at fifty cents an
item, it's very affordable.) and we said no, and they said, ok then you
can just hang out. :)

Ok, I hate to be devils advocate and *please correct me if I am out of
place but.....

(and keep in mind I am trying to catch up going backwards on posts today
so I havn't read the entire story) anyway, how about giving this a 100%
Try? I mean, DBT is skills training but each of you could use these
skills to your benefit with separate needs.

If you really encompass the skills and the philosophy you may find some
of it useful. I have never heard of 'voices' or 'multiples' being a
result of 'behaviors' as Lenahan has never reference these in her book
so it would seem that the philosphy may not be as judgemental as your
agency seems to make it out to be.

You could even go to the Library and check out her book and correct your
agency if needed. If only one of yous finds DBT helpful then it was
worth the effort. I know DBT pretty well and have found that 'everyday
Joe's' can benefit from some of this stuff. For example, DEARMAN skill.
I use this a lot on evl. it really works.

My point originally is that this is just an 'approach'. And i am curious
if you have truly given it your full attention, energy and dedication to
see if the theory works? I am not accusing you of 'not trying but I am
thinking that I know how I react everytime my t tries to change
something. I hate change!! I hate rules! But if I just go with it for
awhile, sometimes I find he was actually on the right path, and
sometimes not. but I never really know until I fully try (even if it is
kicking and screaming the whole way).

Therapy can be a huge learning experience in many different ways. Maybe
I am wrong and DBT has been nothing but anxiety and the feelings of not
being safe.

then again, that is exactly how ppl usually react with change.

Dunno slunky. i am not sure I have the whole picture, but thought I
would take the opposite stance just to challenge you a bit.
