Rainbow Colors
I have such a totally cool job! :) Some of the kids I work
with can't/won't talk so we use something called 'pic syms'
(picture symbols) with them. These are pictures of a specific
item (like a picture of an ice cream cone for example) that
the person uses to indicate choices and such.
These pictures come in huge books full of these pictures, much
like a coloring book :) What you do is make a copy of the pictures
applicable to that specific person and then color them so that
they look more like what you want them to stand for (like I can
color a carton of milk to look like chocolate milk or white
milk and then the kid can 'tell' me which they want for lunch)
The ultimate goal is to make a communication board for each
kid that has all the important pic syms that this kid needs
to deal with in real life (like we make one about going to
a restaurant, one about school, one about playing, etc) and
then the kid can carry the appropriate board with them and
take it out to communicate in any given setting. And they
can communicate with people who don't know sign language as
well :)
But, all these pictures need to be colored! I have eight
students in my class who use pic syms. Lots of coloring!!!
Needless to say the inside kids are pretty busy at times
getting all this coloring done! *grin* We like coloring the
food pics the best, of course.

Many children (mostly autistic) at my school use those picture card
things. Everything in the room is labeled with them, and they have
schedule boards with velcro on them to attach the pictures. When they
want to do something, they point to the picture (often with a lot of
coaxing). My school's pretty neat actually. It's special-ed for ages
7?-22. There are maybe forty students, of all kinds of problems (I'm in
the high-functioning class, recovering from schizophrenia). I get to
work with one of the autistic girls once a week, and I really enjoy it.
I want to do things like that professionally, eventually. Once I get out
of this school and back to college...
