I am a lifelong artist and have Fibromyalgia and Arthritis, The
combination of my illnesses has the symptoms of severe disabling chronic
pain and many other symptoms.
In the past I had the strength to do sculpure, painting, drawing,
printmaking, most everything (physical). Now I rarely do much of the
physical arts. I am mainly a digital artist doing computer painting, 3d
modeling, vrml, and digital music. Examples of my work are at:

I found that the change from physical to digital art was a great benefit
to me as a disabled artist. The need to manipulate the physical objects,
stretching canvas, carving stone, holding my arm up for painting, etc.
has been replaced with a keyboard on my lap and a mouse on my right, low
enough to be comfortable.
Just by coincidence my ideas had been moving away from what I call "flat,
static" art to the bright glowing colors (on the monitor) of digital art,
and the exitement of unlimited imagination in 3d animation and vrml.
Digital art also offers greater exposure to my work. Before I "went
digital", I had limited and (expensive) gallery exposure. I also found
galleries incredibly snobby and very much involved and invested into
whatever current "school" (usually more like a "fad") was popular or
recognized by the "academia" as "valid". I speak from experience, having
worked in a gallery for a few years. The whole gallery scene seemed very
narrow and restrictive and counter-productive to me as an artist.
On my webpage I can reach a MUCH greater international audience, on my
last check, I was getting about 7,000 hits on my page a month! I barely
had 7,000 viewers in my lifetime before the page.
The downside of this is how to "sell" digital art. 3d artists can make a
living, but usually it involves moving and working "at" a jobsite. (Not
easy for the disabled, sometimes nearly impossible) I've been considering
using art publishers or printers to sell my work, possibly through my
webpage. (any thoughts on this?)
Mainly though, Art is "communication to me. So the web and digital art is
the best medium and the web the best "gallery" for my goals.
Well, those are my opening thoughts. I'd like to say thanks to the creator
of this group for the forum to speak. great idea!
I hope other artists contribute.
Anyone with questions on my work, or digital, 3d art in general, just ask,
I'm more than happy to share, either e-mail or here.
