Hi Fellow Losers,
Well over the holidays I managed to reclaim 5lbs, and every ounce is still
clinging to me! Now that the jumbo jar of cashews from Costco is finally
empty, this next week holds a lot of promise (and probably a lot of
low-point soup).
Stay happy and healthy.

I knew it! (G)

Okay, a number of years ago, a local shop (macy's or nordstrom's-like)
called Fredricks and Nelsons (Seattle, like Nordstroms) had a candy
called Frangos. It was packaged in an octogon shaped box. Mint
probably was the original flavor. Other flavors were developed. Kind
of a small rectangular truffle. An inner chocolate with flavor dipped
in chocolate. Some turkey managed to get control and sent them into
bankruptcy. They ceased to exist. Another local, Bon Marche, took
over the very popular Frango line, purchasing it in the bankruptcy
sale, I think. The Bon now is Bon-Macy's.

So they still produce the item but it was made for them by a local
chocolateer (spelling?). Recently, they changed manufacturers. The
local guy decided to create a similar confection. A legal bruhaha.
He managed to develop something very similar but packaging was not
permitted in the octogon box. So they just made a larger plain
plastic jar and it is distributed by Costco. Doing well from what I
understand.

Therein lies a long short story.

But it does have an axiom. Just this weekend, when I was discussing
portion control with a Frango freak (g), I discussed Skinny Cows and
the individual and therefore, portion control angle, of one item
instead of a tub of ice cream. Then I noted that the old octogon
Frango box held much fewer candies then the Costco JAR she had already
consumed. There was a tendency to hold back in the octogon so that
there would be some left over for another day/week. The larger jar,
huge, actually, does not cause that same tendency or hesitancy.
There's plenty more. Therefore, more candies per sitting and not as
self-limiting.

Aren't you glad you asked?

Are these Frangos the same as the original Chicago based Frango Mints? At one
time they were only found for sale at Marshall Fields, and highly sought after.
Now Target sells them also (Target is a division of Fields), and the Chicago
manufacturing plant has been shut down.

YUP - you got it. Marshall Fields had some connection either with The

originally a holiday item and then expanded to yearly available.

Probably a good thing I didn't mention the pfaltzgraff dishes or the tupperware
measuring scoop, huh? It is odd though that I focused on the storage container
BEFORE the cookies ... although those on the top rack look interesting. Are they
some sort of meringue? And what kind were you hiding from us?

I think I'm also back into the non-holiday attitude, finally. I've had more than
my share of fruits, salads and veggies this week, and they sure were good.
Chicken twice for dinner, fish, and had a lean pork tenderloin thrown in somewhere
along the line.

I'll have to look for the article PR posted, think I missed it along the line. My
mind has been shot, but I'm feeling better now.

Glad something in the memory bank is working today. <G> I do remember them being
a holiday item, many years ago. When my sister first moved to the city she would
buy everyone Frango's. Then they became a year round item, then started expanding
flavors if I recall correctly. It was somewhere along this line that (to me
anyway) they stopped being *special*. Probably a good thing, or I would just have
had one more thing to splurge on.

I don't know where they are being produced now, but it is no longer Chicago. And
I just heard today that Fanny May is also closing it's doors. Hub told me that
when the stores empty their shelves, that is it. I told him there was no way I
was going to bring anymore chocolate into this house, at this time! <g>

Yes, the top ones were made especially for me since she knows I
indulge in Ms Meringues! But there were not exactly perfect - she did
add bran flakes but also pecans. They were very good.

The others were toffee chips. I'm missing the third ones right now
but the fourth variety were a Nanimo type thingie. Brownie bottom,
sugar, butter, cream filling and then a chocolate glaze top! The
fourth were a chocolate cookie with raisins I think. Then there was
a terrific 5th cookie she had saved in the freezer from another bake -
it was terrific even though it was not chocolate - it was a cookie but
made from a yeast raised dough - flakey, terrific. But I did ski
something like 25-30 miles with some good elevation. The non-meringue
were actually not made for me but a "girls'" potluck that I
fortunately did not attend (G)

Sounds like we need time to wind down holidays but know the program
and the skills.

As for the landscape pan shot - it is actually five separate pictures
and a separate program stitched them together automatically. You just
have to make sure that there is sufficient overlap between sidebyside
images for it to work.

I think that I HAVE TO LIVE near mountains. I also like knowing the
ocean is somewhere nearby - altho, it is much further from Seattle
than most people think.

Welcome. I skipped some of the cookies.

Altho, (back to that other thread on the skiing and feeling good) - I
do think that eating more while and after skiing this last period may
be explained by the fact that I have less "stores" in body fat to
expend that much energy and keep going that many hours. So maybe the
munchies are a reasonable reaction as long as I don't carry it out
over a full week. I still think banking activity points after really
heavy exertion is acceptable for me on occasion.

It really is nice - it's the Washington version of the Okanogan!

Makes sense. I think that with the amount of exercise you get you can
afford to eat more. I on the other hand, don't get in nearly as much
exercise, so eating more is a really bad choice for me to make,
unfortunately it's one I've been making ALOT lately.

pretty tied up with the business and your son - so compromise is in
order. Somehow you do NEED the willpower. Or try filling up with

My secretary today had the new WW calculator. It does food points and
she asked for my activities this weekend. She freaked when I told her
STRENUOUS, FOUR HOURS and my weight and came up with 16+ points or
more each day. And last week's 3 days of skiing was probably more
than that. She did think that I do need to eat but could not suggest
realistically how much. I probably do need to count points again and
journal more again.

I do try to get as much exercise as I can while at work. If I need to do
errands and I'm not in a hurry I'll walk to wherever it is I need to go.
Now that the shop is larger I'm constantly on the go there, from one side to
the other. I need to find a pedometer and track how far I go in a day just
in the shop. I would probably be surprised at the amount of walking I do
just in that space.

Nicholas also keeps me busy. I find the days just fly by and are gone
before I know it. They need to be about 8 hours longer... No that's a bad
idea because there would be more time to eat!

Tonight instead of high fat/calorie snacks I had 0 point soup and fruit.
Off to a good start today. Totally within points! Now I'm hoping I can
stay there! Oh, did manage to get in my allotment of water today too.

I've begun journalling today and so far I'm doing well. It's just a matter
of keeping it up. I thought once about a WW calculator, but don't think I'd
get enough use out of it. I use Dustin's point calculator alot, also use
the WW online one and MasterCook.

I don't buy gummy bears, can't avoid them if they're in the house. Nicholas
has a bad habit of sucking on them, then leaving them stuck to different
pieces of furniture or carpets, so that's another good reason NOT to buy
them.

Trader Joe stuff. <G> I'll take a look and see what the Irish Oats are - if the
can even states a difference. All the cans do look identical though, so have to
be pretty careful when making that selection.

And just to get you going ... if you ever decide you want a switch from the
pre-portioned skinny cow treats ... my daughter just had to have some coconut
icecream from them (scooped into little coconut shells, pretty cute). I tried the
Orange Givrees this evening (orange sorbet), worked out to 1.78 points (if I
remember correctly) and were darned good! Again, a pre-measured item so making
those scooping mistakes is taken care of for us. <G> I did have a taste of
daughters coconut, was also very good but a bit higher in points - 3.70.

I haven't checked our store out and don't plan on it, but by news reports I have a
feeling it is also empty. Todays newspaper said there were still products
available in the warehouse and they would be shipping and restocking ... not sure
how true that is though. I did notice the case in our grocery store was empty
today. It's ok, I definitely do not need any more chocolate! <G>

I was under the impression that Steel Cut and Irish Oats are the same
thing. My guess is that they're all the same process (the oats are
chopped with steel blades, as opposed to "rolled" oats which are
steamed to soften them and then pressed flat to cook faster), but are
cut to different levels of fineness.

I haven't tried any of them, but I've been thinking about it lately.
Oatmeal makes me queasy, but maybe it's the texture of the rolled
oats.

First this, a link to McCann's getting right to the heart of the
matter. I only see STEEL CUT but they are made from Irish Oats. Then
they have some quickie types etc but I think there is really only the
one and depends on which side of the mcCAN you look at (G)

http://www.mccanns.ie/pages/products.html

They also have FAQ and prep ideas including the one I did on my own -
making a larger batch and reheating daily, as needed. Also the
overnight method and a microwave method (I had tried on my own and ran
into the bubbling trouble they mention!)

Well, I had my dried fruit and was trying to eat that. But, again,
too much of a good thing???

Okay. I will think about it. I also think that I need a
free-standing freezer. Mine is stuffed tight and just now trying to
get the bread in there I dumped the OLD english muffins which I don't
use anyway.

The steel cut are very good and not pasty like the rolled oats. Their
website has recipes for taboule (sp) and risotto, made with oats (G)

Thanks for the info Stan, I was really confused when at the store - but left my
glasses at home so couldn't investigate the different cans very well (other than
reading the LARGE print). I'm going to pick a can up this week and give them a
try.

Thanks for the link! I have it bookmarked, will do some reading later when I have
a bit more time (between loads of laundry). I wonder if maybe what I saw as being
Irish and Steel cut ... were packages that had been turned around on the shelf?
