Hi group! Just returned from our week in Maine and it was just
wonderful! We stayed on Mt. Desert Island, site of Acadia National
Park. Had a fine time relaxing in paradise -- what a *beautiful*
place! We actually have a "time-share" condo there (for those
unfamiliar with this -- you purchase a one-week slot in a unit -- then
it's yours for that period each year, though you also have to send in
an annual "maintenance fee") -- in Southwest Harbor (about 20 minutes
from the park and Bar Harbor). We hadn't been able to stay in our
place for the last couple of years (loaned it out to some friends),
and it was just fantastic to finally come back.

I went on two terrific hikes (Beech Mt. and The Beehive). DH, Thomas
(our 15-year-old) and his friend, also did the very strenuous West
Face of Cadillac Mt. Enjoyed a nice bike trip (though the hills were
rough!) and played golf at a beautiful little course (right by the
water and surrounded by mountains) -- had fun, though my game was
definately *not* one of the more spectacular sites in the park <grin>.
Loved taking a nice, long walk down to the harbor each morning.
Certainly got my exercise, as you can tell. <g>

It felt wonderful to finally get back to doing some painting (I do
oils -- strictly amateur, but I love trying to capture the wonderful
scenery on canvas). Worked on a view of the golf course (DH's
request) and a landscape/seascape of a little cove, as well as
"starting" a sweeping view of the mountains, islands and surrounding
waters from the summit of Cadillac Mt. We took lots of pictures so
that I can finish it, and do some more paintings of Maine back in NJ.
Actually, I've never tried doing a landscape from a photo -- but it
should be interesting.

Anyway, I bet you never thought I'd get around to mentioning food or
WW in this post! Well, my eating during vacation was excellent... for
the first two or three days. <g> This included a great, home-cooked
lobster dinner -- and I didn't dip into the butter. After that, I
have to admit that I went downhill fast and before long was planning
to just get back on track *after* vacation.

Part of this eating was well worth it -- best treat: a blueberry pie
that my mother-in-law made for us (she joined us on vacation -- she's
really sweet, btw, we get along great and I was very happy she was
able to come) -- entirely of wild berries that we picked during a
mountain hike! But plenty of the indulgences were nothing more than
junk food -- chips, nuts, candies, pre-dinner snacks of bread, cheese
and pate, etc. However, since I was too busy to be constantly eating,
and *did* get a lot of exercise, it looks like I only gained a pound
or two. I had actually gone down a bit *before* we left, but I didn't
record it anywhere, feeling that I might "relax" on vacation.

Happy to say I *did* get right back on track the morning we left
(yesterday) and stayed on program, even during the long, 10-hour drive
home. Ignored the junkie car snacks in favor of water, fruit,
mini-carrots and diet soda. Ate the "special" lunch that I'd fixed
for myself (1 1/2 sandwiches of turkey on diet toast), instead of the
over-stuffed meat & cheese subs that I made for everyone else. When
we stopped for dinner at a little Italian place, I passed up the
garlic bread and had a plate of pasta with red clam sauce and a plain
salad. Even when we finally got home, exhausted, I just had a yogurt
and a piece of my whole wheat matzah -- definately a good move, as
I've *often* fallen victim to "after the trip" bedtime snacks.
Needless to say, I felt *terrific* this morning, with one good day
already under my belt.

Guess that's it for now. I really should be unpacking, doing washes,
cleaning the house (our 19 and 21-year-olds had stayed home alone...
but they kept the place "pretty" good... <g>), doing a food-shop,
etc., etc. Sorry if this post ended up a bit long, but it *is* nice
to be back. I really wanted to check in right away, making the
commitment to myself, and to the group, that I *will* stay back on
program now that we're home. In about three weeks we have the "second
half" of our vacation -- a week in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
We'll be renting a house on the beach with another family, and I'm
determined to try and make a bit more progress between now and then.
Take care, everyone.

Awesome!!! Sounds like you had a great time!
Hubby and I need to take a road trip soon or we will go stir crazy, but we
went nutso at the pound and brought home a new puppy, so it will be a bit
before we get to.

I am so proud of you. I, on the otherhand, ate like a shoat being prepared
for the county fair when I was out of town this summer. I should only eat
27 points--one day, however, I ate 70.

However--it will come off--it really will.

Thanks for the great post Gail, I will travel via you! Sounds like the
change of scenery did you well. You are doing terrific and glad to see you
were able to have a couple slip ups without it giving you permission to
chuck the whole thing. You are in the grove now and a better healthier you
is just around the corner.

As you read my "bird is back" post, you will see I made it over my hurdle.
I think I found the key for my journey. I needed to up my exercise to get
the metabolism going. I good jump start. So have a great week and avoid
the pitfalls of returning from vacation.

I am so sorry. I guess I just assumed you all were Southern and had grown
up going to rodeos, county fairs and big church bazaars.
