Not a fun topic to discuss, but I'm desperate for help...
I'm a 37rd old male, been doing Atkins since Jan. 6th and lost 19lb. off my 5'11" frame (from 195 to 176). I haven't deviated too much from induction recommendations as it seems to suit me just fine. About a month ago, the constipation started getting bad and then I developed hemorrhoids which I've never had a problem with before. I have seen a doctor who verified that the big "H" is all that is wrong.
A teaspoon of Metamucil seemed to help in the beginning, but not anymore. Only ExLax seems to do the trick, and I don't think I should make that a part of my daily routine. I'm drinking tons of water now.. which I had slacked off a bit when the problem first surfaced. However, while the irration has gotten somewhat better, the fact remains that I'm still constipated which is still causing the irritation, especially at night.
Was hoping someone else who faced this may have some recommendations that worked for them.
Also, I found that drinking water, like a 16 oz bottle within a short amount of time (like 5 minutes or so) will do the trick many times. Drinking it slowly, no matter how much, has never helped me, not sure why.
All the teas are caffine free and they certainly don't taste like they have anything sweet in them. This box doesn't list carbs, but when I posted this before (all the ingredients are the same), I listed 0 for fat, soduim, carbs and protein

Try flaxmeal (ground flax seed). Not only does it add lots of fiber it also contains essential oils. If you want recipes search the Google archives http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search You'll find tons of them.

You don't give any indication of what you're eating, but I suggest you start upping your vegetable intake, specifically spinach and broccolli. Ground flax seed is good too. I had the same problem when I started low-carbing and it scared the bejayzuz outta me.

Yes, It WAS a problem until I discovered flax seed meal and mixed it with bran for a cereal.
I posted the recipe I use as an answer to a flax question, but will post it again.
The measures are approximate as I don't measure carefully!
1/3 - 1/2 cup unrocessed bran 1/4 cup flax seed ground 1/2 - 1 tbl soy protein powder dash salt. Add enough hot water (not boiling) for the right consistency for you. I flavor mine with Atkins SF Rhaspberry syrup. Sometimes I add cream. You could flavor it however you want!
I eat it every day and that was the END of my problems.
I have the same problem, if I'm not careful. I use Psyllium husks, 1 heaping teaspoon mixed in a glass of water. Once a day usually works for me, except during "hard times", then I take 1 heaping teaspoon immediately before or after each meal. Be sure to drink a lot of water when using psyllium husks.

My husband I think is having problems with hernias too lately. What were the symptoms, so perhaps we can better recognize what's going on with him, like to get a strangulated bowel before it might become a danger? He gets alot of abdominal pain; I think his hernias are in the inguinal, below intestinal, areas tho'. We have to find a belt for him to wear. ares

Nope. I would eat flax seeds (you can mix them with cream cheese--part of a delicious breakfast!) every day. I would drink some oil. I would drink more water. I would get more regular exercise. And, of course, what everyone else said about broccoli and brussels sprouts and cauliflower and cabbage.
If none of the above worked, I would take an oral stool softener or use glycerin suppositories, neither of which have the negative impact of chemical laxatives.
Hi; wow, they even told hubby to lose weight and he's 6'3" and around 325. He did feel a slight bulge down above the crease of the leg but seems to have abdominal pains that come and go; I tell him to lay down(maybe it will fall back into place); he still has to go to the follow up appointments with his doc, and yeah, it's a male....... ares

Try the glycerin suppositories and also go to Wal-mart and buy Equate brand equivalent of Preparation H...it's cheaper and with the big H you need them.
Go to yahoo groups and look for a hemorrhoid or anal fissure support group. You'll get some great tips there--
ideas: try kondisil (at pharmacy), drink mineral oil, use baby tylenol supposetories for some direct pain relief (they helped w/ fissures). Be very close to a tub for after a BM, to soak and relieve some of the misery.
Drink tons of water. Use the tucks wipes.
Bless your heart -- it's a miserable thing having your nether-regions in pain!

Oh, ok. It was the 12 places that caught my attention. We had several folks jokingly adjust their goal weight like that for a while.

Lots of slang/relaxed phrasing that non-Aussies have difficulty parsing, mostly. If we can figure out *what* you're saying, we can usually tell its meant in fun. :0)

You left because *they* didn't grasp your style? Hell...I got into major crap with a major player my first day here. Was told NEVER - and I mean never to *speak* to her again. I stuck around just to piss her off. That was about 2 years ago...LOL and 131 pounds ago.

LOL. Good on you. I've been at loggerheads with some folks here on occasion too. Its truly a strange feeling to spat and not have the world come to an end. I take it as a sign that I'm getting healthier. -- revek The only stupid question is one that doesn't get asked.
