comes from the drug store (where I get my test strips) a letter that I have
to validate my test taking & send it to Medicare. Like I am going to rip
them off!! GRRRRRRRRRRRRR............Does anyone elseHave to do this? And
do you feel this is an invasion of privacy??

there is a letter for my Dr.

Yes, and an OK from the doctor too. I've only had to do it once so far.

No, I opted out of Medicare part B because my own insurance (with my

I believe that's a requirement from Medicare if you (1) use more than one
stick per day and (2) have Medicare coverage. It's fairly simple--just
maintain a log for one month--but I also dislike it and consider it an
invasion of privacy. I don't know of any other prescription where Medicare
has similar requirements.

Yes, the doctor wrote the prescription for 6 tests per day. The pharmacist
told me that they wouldn't do all of that for 2 sticks a day on Medicare,
but more than that and they do. I don't like it either, but...what else to
do?

I have heard that is what you have to do, yes. I have to send my Dr. my
readings every two weeks. And a lot of people have the kind of meter where
they can just download their readings to the Dr.

The local pharmacy that provides my test strips under medicare asked
me to sign a form for them last year. It was sort of an affidavit
that I use the test strips. Of course the reason given was that I
use a lot of strips, 6 a day. I signed it and have heard nothing
since.

Like you, I use my strips. I don't sell them off to anyone.

It used to be that you could buy almost expired test strips
on eBay. The last time I looked that practice had been
curtailed. And subsequently they started marking the boxes
"for DME beneficiaries only."

They work the same as before so I don't care how the box is labeled.

I've had no complaints about the health care system here. As far as anything
major is concerned, I am a Type 2, I've had 6 stents emplaced with 2
restenosis experiences, 2X bleeding ulcer fixed, and an abdominal
aortial implant, much of it under Medicare, the rest under employer
related health insurance.

Any healthcare system is only as good as the weakest link, and
sometimes that weakness kills people.

I found it interesting that even the local family owned supermarket
offers health insurance to their employees.

IMO, HMO's, on the other hand, generally stink.

I get my testing supplies thru Liberty Medical and I'm on Medicare. They're
cheaper, call to verify a refill and have a program for free supplies for
low income people. I've been with them since '05.

About every three months I fill out a log sheet and fax (or snail mail) it
to them with the last month's tests on it and once a year I authorize them
to get a new prescription from my medical provider.

Invasion of privacy? Absolutely not! Your supplier has to have a paper trail
to show what is happening to the supplies they sell ... no trail, no
supplies. Personally, I figure it's just numbers on paper and nothing there
can be used to steal my I.D. anyway.

Btw, I test on my arms ... much less pain (unless you happen to nail a
nerve) and a lot more area to poke.

I took my log book in to my doctor once in the past 7 years. His only
comment was that I should be listing what I ate as well. I don't bother
because my diet is usually relatively stable.

I only make a note of my food if I get a weird high or low, especially if it
is a food I don't normally eat. Today was a bit odd. My breakfast
yesterday and today was the same. But this morning I started with higher
BG. I know it is probably because I ate chili beans as my bed time snack.
I won't be doing that again. They were horrible! I bought them with a
coupon so they didn't cost much. But I disliked them so much I threw the
rest of the can out. Anyway... After breakfast my BG was exactly the same
for the two days. And I ate exactly the same meal.

Mine are coming in the mail. Three months worth at four times a day, with
three renewals, from Medco; prescribed by my doctor. I'll see what Medicare
wants.

Thanks for the idea, Wendy!

If you do more than a minimum number of tests, Medicare requires a log
showing you actually did that many. I get that from my provider
occasionally. I asked my Endo to prescribe 5 tests a day. I don't always
do that many, but it's nice to not have to worry about running out of
strips!

I get my supplies from Walgreen m.o. with no problem. They do all the
deal-with-the-doctor part about authorizations & so on. Sometimes they send
me log sheets & a letter that says MCare *may* require it but so far I've
not had to send any in. I've gotten either 4 or 3 strips/day for 3+ years
now. MCare + gap ins covers the total costs.

I have no problem doing tests on fingers. Tried on arm & it just made it
itch. :-)

You are being fed the same bullshit
They do not tell you that Test Strips are under part "B", not part "D"
and your drug store is not a Part B supplier, they use a third party.

You have two choices.
1) Go to a Part "B" supplier, problem is, most of them want more
business than just strips.
2) Find a drug store which won't give you problems. Of all people, Rite
Aid ?? They will look at the PRESCRIPTION, and that is what they will
give you. No nonsense about only 2 strips a day, or some type of magic
proof.

Stay away from Walgreens, FAR away, and most other drug stores. My
regular store is Kmart, and the pharmacist there warns me NOT to get
entangled with their third party supplier

Fortunately, I don't have to deal with drugstores too much. No
prescriptions, except strips right now, and I have a lot of them at present.
I stopped the Lantus and am really concentrating on keeping my carbs low. It
seems to work best for me when I do that.

How are you going to get the blood sample into the meter without a strip?

That won't stop them from demanding your log

I don't log at all, I use my meter to set my doses.

There is no requirement for the logs, it is something the people who
process STRIPS for most drug stores want to justify that the strips are
not being resold. Rite AId takes the position "If the physician says
so, do it!" on part B. They are lousy on part D drugs though
