Even the best doctor (and I think my diabetic specialist is wonderful,
at least for ME) can make an error. I've had a sore on the front of
my right ankle for a couple of years. Reddish patch, occasionally a
weeping sore. Dr looked at it regularly, wasn't disturbed. Visiting
an orthopedic Dr (old herniated disc problems) his office sharing
friend looked at the sore and yelled at me - "make an appointment with
the hospital immediately! Skin cancer!! Must come off!!" Well -
he's a plastic surgeon and I didn't like his manner so I asked around,
found a dermatologist, and he looked, took a sample (ouch!) and said
he'd find out. Now that's an approach I can live with.
Couple of days later I get a call.
"Come in, it's skin cancer and needs to come out." Diagnosis
supported by facts. OK.
So - tax season or not, in I go and it was an office procedure -
needles VERY painful - and a big hole was dug in my ankle. Biopsy
says all is out. "Common, garden variety, basal cell carcinoma"
Why on the ankle?
Darned if I know.
But I've sported a bandage and a limp and collected LOTS of simpathy
from clients.

Oh.....diabetes doing nicely. Still on meds, still in the 90 to 140
range. Don't miss my kidney at all. Back hurts a lot quite often but
Tylenol does the job. Heart Dr wants to see me after the 15th
(actually after the 17th this year) but says "you're one lucky old
lady". (I like him.) 79 will hit me this June but so far, I'm
hitting back. The old bones get nibbled away and I'm getting wary of
driving at night but so far, between-the-ears works.

Nan, Type 2 and working...........

Wow Nan, lucky for you that someone spotted it, and that you followed up
on it, and great news with the rest of it.

Damn! I'm glad that got taken care of -- and that you're collecting
lots of sympathy. :-)

> Oh.....diabetes doing nicely.

Heh! Yeah, there's a point when diabetes moves from "I've got
diabetes!" to "Oh, yeah... diabetes doing nicely." It's good to have
moved from one to the other, I've found. Life for me since 30 has been
a string of "Oh! So I have this additional diagnosis. How 'bout that?"
I'm probably coming due for my next one in a couple of years.

Excellent.

Sheesh, Nan, this has been a bad year for you. Glad you got that skin
cancer taken care of and out. My husband had one out some 10-15 years ago
and no recurrance.

Anyway, it was nice to hear form you during the tax season. Perhaps
afterwards we will have your lovely voice of reason once again on here.

Been wondering how you are doing, Nan, and if you were working this season,
however, this additional cancer wasn't what I really had in mind. *s* You
will be a reminder for me to keep up with the lingering signs of the
cellulitis I've had since last April. Swelling down, and isn't weeping now,
but as long as it's visible, I do believe I'll keep a close eye on all of
it. Not be paranoid, but not ignore it, either. LOL

All in all, get ready for a big birthday bash in June!

Hi Nan,

Wow, glad your orthopedist caught the skin cancer! Sorry having it
removed was so painful.

I bet your primary doc won't make a mistake like this again (I trust
you told him about it, right?). I used to work in a doctor's clinic.
I found that if a doctor missed something like that in one patient, he/
she was rabid about screening for it every patient, even if the
symptoms were only mildly similar.

Just another month or so and the tax season madness ought to calm down
a bit. Hang in there!

Nan, you are very lucky that it was a basal cell and not a melanoma.
The best doctors make mistakes, but I always feel that if something is
there that shouldnt be, it should be looked at by the proper person. a
diabetic doctor is not a dermatologist.

I hope the healing is going well. I am so glad it is only a basal cell.

Hi Nan

Good to hear from you.

I've had a few of those - but never on the ankle. You
weren't one of those kids who stuck their foot out the
window of the back seat of the car when your dad was
driving? :-)

This is great news "Common, garden variety, basal cell
carcinoma" - it's always a nervous wait for me until that
lab report arrives.

Don't put it off next time; I get half a dozen zapped every
year (Australia is the skin cancer capital of the world,
plus I used to drive cabs with my right arm on the
windowsill) but most are frozen off with the spray. It's
only when I delay and let them go too far that they need to
be excised - and that's the only time I had a malignant one
(all excised, thank goodness).

"79 will hit me this June but so far, I'm hitting back."

You'll be batting 1000 when you're approaching 89:-)

Cheers, Alan, T2, Australia.

Actually, I was commenting on Nan's forthcoming June
Birthday.

But of course I'm going to be 79 - just in 19 years time,
not this year:-)

I'm glad they got the cancer. I live in AZ and I would say 99% of Drs in
this state would recognize a Basal Cell carcinoma right away. My sister has
had many removed from her face and arms. They don't usually become a big
problem unless totally neglected. Do you have to see the dermatologist on a
regular bases now? I had some pre-cancer spots removed a few year back and
I had to go back every 3-6 months for two years...for a complete body
check...plus I couldn't wear make up...now if you have seen this old face
without makeup you would understand my dismay...LOL.

A belated congrats on getting these things sorted out. I've had some
"dubious" spots burned out with ice over the years, and need to see the doc
about a couple of others. At my tender age of 59, with a bad ankle taken
over by arthritis, I'm trying to picture myself at 79...... hmmmm.....

Anyway, I wish you a happy 79th in June... and then>>> the big Eighty! My
mother-in-law turned 80 a few months ago, and always insists on "taking it
easy" now. Yet, when we had her with us for a couple of days last weekend,
we found her pace to be a bit too fast for us....

My mum's idea of taking it easy is to wander off solo in her
motorhome (she's 82:-)

My Dad's invited me for a day out in London on Friday - he wants to do
the Ideal Home exhibition and the London Eye. At 85, he's entitled to
disabled tickets, plus a free companion - very handy :D He's going up
himself alone tomorrow night, he wants to catch a show. My stepmother,
OTOH, has expressed the intention of never leaving the village again.

Now there's a thought. Mum's coming to live next door soon.
I wonder if she's entitled to free tickets and a
companion...

Doubtful, and if she was, it'd be to something in Sydney
1000 km away.
