I must give the idea to some that I am some kind of fitness freak and lucky
to be able to exercise. Not necessarily so. With a completely arthritic
(from past injury) right ankle, osteo arthritis in me left foot, bad left
shoulder from two bike accidents, bad right shoulder from straining to undo
a wheel nut, I have found it increasingly harder to exercise. I was lucky to
be able to ride on my bicycle for tens of thousands of kilometres, but this
yet undiagnosed mysterious ailment stopped me from doing all but short bike
rides. An accident put a stop to even that. I managed to be able to work out
on my exercise bike, but that was all.

Now along came GESAC. This is a swimming and fitness complex which happens
to be located half way between where I work and home. I have been going
there almost daily. I have been happy to note that I can swim in my "inept"
way for ages without any problems from all my conditions as mentioned above.
I have been doing between 20 and 25 laps of a 25 metre pool without any huge
tiredness or any discomfort. I drop in there each day on my way home. In May
I clocked up over six kilometres of swimming. My bg figures have been
terrific, enabling me to reduce my insulin slightly and still maintain
improved figures.

I have been able to maintain this new exercise regimen without increasing my
food intake. Having a slight paunch, my stomach is now flat. I don't know
how long I will be able to continue this exercise routine, as by evening I
am already quite sleepy, especially given the 10 kilometres of exercise bike
work I still do. I do hope, however, that when the physical catches up with
me (as it inevitably will) and prevents me from using this new form of
exercise, some other means of doing so will. I have twenty years of
undiagnosed diabetes to make up for.

Henry.

You're probably twice as fast as I am, Budd! I swim like a seal - on land.

Henry.

You've probably heard of those divers that try to see how deep they can go
on one breath?

That's how I swim but I need a rescue team to get me to the surface again.

One time I passed up a rock I'd thrown in ten minutes earlier. . . . . Oh,
wait ... we're not telling fish stories, are we? Sorry, went fishing
Saturday and I'm still stuck in bragging mode . . . .

You know, Budd, I have a theory about my (and possibly yours) swimming - the
more inefficient you are at swimming, the more worthwhile the exercise is
for your diabetes. I probably exert twice the effort for the distance that a
"real" swimmer would, since my swimming background involves my wife teaching
me (to lift my feet off the sand) when we got married. I never bothered to
perfect it, getting by reasonably well. Other swimmers at the pool go for
speed - I go for the readings on my bg meter, and these are good!

Henry.

Many moons ago, in the middle part of the last century, I used to take a
snorkel and fins to the local pool and dive for the money others would drop.
It helped I could hold my breath for nearly four minutes.

I usually made enough for my next admission, snacks, beverages and for a
date on Friday night to the movies with all the trimmings.

Best single find: a tenspot stuck on the pool drain ... in 63 that was a
real haul.

But without the fins, I couldn't swim hardly at all.
