I was a late onset adult diabetic and have been shooting since 1998. I
started with a 70/30 N/R mix, went to separate N and R, In 2002 I
shifted from the long to the short needles and about a yearand a half
ago shifted to Levemir and R, and then Levemir and Novolog. I rotate
between my thighs and abdomen. I have never previously encountered an
issue with inflamation and tenderness, lasting for several days, at
the injection sites.

Recently this has occurred, but only at the Levemir sites. My CDE
recommended going back to the long needle and splitting the dosage
between two sites. The itching has gone away with the deeper injection
but, if anything the tenderness is greater and now it is int twice as
many spots as previously.

Does anyone have experience with issues like this?

I'm sorry, I can't help you. But you may have helped me. I never used
to get inflamation, but over the last year I have developed some. It
never occurred to me that switching to short needles may have been the
culprit. I like the fact of using short needles, but maybe they have
been the cause of my problem all along. Thanks, I hope you get an
answer on yours.

I only ever had this problem on a few occasions when I was using the longer
needles. Now that I use the mini needles, no problems.

Actually, switching to long needles and breaking up the dose (I am
shooting 65 units of Levemir) were suggestions from my CDE. The only
benefit I have seen from doing this has been initial itching which
went away after an hour or so, is no longer there. The deep
tenderness to the touch and discomfort have not gone away or lessened
at all with the smaller dose and deeper injection.

It has also been suggested that this may be a reaction to my flu
shots. I had the seasonal one about two months ago and the H1N1 three
weeks ago, close to the time the inflamations started. It is time
correlated, but not clearly causal.
