Its because nothing in England is far enough away to bother measuring it in time. When we hea d to the beach in Alabama every summer, its 12 or 13 hours away. That means more than simply saying Oh it's a little more than 700 miles. ;-)

When I used to go to Oregon it was 14 hours, unless it was winter and
snowy, then it took 18 hours. That puts a hole in the day.

Is anything ever universal? The nearest I can think of, off-hand, is a parent being willing to kill someone threatening their child.

I've done 500 miles in one day's journey, and there was further if I'd been insane, but that included Scotland, too.
