I tried to read a lot of the posts to see if this has been discussed lately, but didn't see anything, so figured I would ask this group their opinion.

My 7 year old son has been fighting Crohns for over a year now.  The biggest symptom he had was an anal fissure.  He had surgery for the first time in December 05 and again in February 06.  In March, he was officially diagnosed with Chron's, but we started treating him in February.  He is on Pentasa, Azathioprine and Metronidazol right now (plus some iron to build up his reserves).  They are telling us if this doesn't work, they want to put him on Remicade.  Actually they have been wanting to put him on Remicade for a while, but we've been pushing it off.

I hear that 6 young adolosents/children have been on Remicade (as well as other pills) and have come down with a fatal Lymphoma.  His grandmother had non hodgkins lymphoma about 7 years ago and is now in remission from it (thank God).  Obviously I am worried about this for him.

Does anyone have any thoughts on Remicade for children.  Anyone have children on Remicade who can share their experiences?  How many children are even on Remicade?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  You can catch me at wart...@yahoo.com.

Sorry to hear one so very young has to deal with this disease. I have been
posting here for a few years and actually don't remember any young people
this young being put on the Remicade, so keep asking, even I'd be interested
in keeping an eye on this thread to hear. I wish your son the best of luck
and please do keep us updated. Sorry I can't be of any help. UM MOM Susan

What about the 5-asa drugs like Asacol, sulfasalizine,etc ?? I have a
16 yo (diagnosed Crohn's at 13) and he's been taking sulfasalizine for
several years now. He has the occasional flair-up, especially when he
eats spicey foods. There are also some anti-biotics used for Crohn's
as well. Check out
www.ccfa.org

Let us know what works for him !

Just for the record, Susan is one of the kindest, most supportive of the regulars in this group, I consider her to be a friend and when she expresses concern is is truly from the heart.

i understand as of just in the last few years that children have been on remicade.  read doc's links, i think you will find what you are looking for.  of course, there are precautions to take (like tb testing), be sure to follow his dr's instructions to the letter.

I'm not sure about 5-asa drugs.  I believe that Metronidazol is an anti biotic especially for Chron's.  We have him close (if not at) the maximum dose now.

Thanks Doc.  Some of these are new to me and some had the same worry I already knew.  :)  Greatly appreciated.

Sounds like very few children are on Remicade yet.  Knowing that 6 out of around 400 known children that I know were on Remicade makes me a bit nervous still.  Will be talking to the Doctor more about it when we go back in a couple of weeks.

Rob,

You might want to contact the young man who runs the website http://www.ibdcure.org. He was a teenager when he first received Remicade. I don't know if what he learned can help you, but he is very knowledgeable of his disease and the effects it has/had on his growth. Good luck.
