How I Beat Crohn's Disease
by Alan Graham (with Alfred Lehmberg)
www.alienview.com

In 1992, after decades of constitutional abuse, Crohn's Disease hit me with
a fervid and debilitating vengeance. Crohn's disease, for the uninitiated is
a
serious illness regarding a chronic inflammation of all or part of the
lower intestine.

Forgetting for a moment that I brought it, completely, on my *unenlightened*
self, it presupposes great pain, general fecal incontinence, dangerous
weight loss and a necessary self-imposed confinement. Additionally, it
causes fatigue, depression, pervasive weakness, and is a destroyer of life's
quality. Such was the quality, and worse, of _my_ life.

When I first went to the Doctor regarding this condition, the GI
(gastrointestinal) specialist immediately and reflexively put me on a six
week regimen of the steroid Prednisone and then followed this with large
daily doses of the sulfur drug sulfasalizine. A testament to the toxicity of
these dangerous prescription drugs is that I began eight full years of a
misery so complete and absolute that I began to wonder how life could be
borne at all.

Every couple of years of that miserable eight, and after a steady and
unyielding diet of the unsatisfactory sulfasalizine, I would feel
PARTICULARLY bad. My trusted Doctors would then put me back on the
Prednisone for a few barely more satisfactory weeks, then they would bounce
me back onto the sulfasalizine...

I was in hell. Note that past tense.

At about year seven of this constant and unending torment I started having
periodic bouts of partial bowel blockage that would compel me to drive
myself to the hospital emergency room, literally on the verge of screaming.
Again there was more Prednisone, only taking the EDGE off my continuing
torture.

I was dying, I felt. My weight was in a downward spiral, I was constantly
ill and beset by sores, rashes, and open lesions. Moreover, my hopefulness
was destroyed by a platoon of Doctors and specialists making EVERY
indication that everything that COULD be done WAS being done, short of
inconclusive surgery to remove large sections of my bowel...

Driven to distraction, and curious that diet (except to do nothing special!)
was not even MENTIONED in the course of years of unsatisfactory treatment, I
began to research my medical predicament on my own. I'm immediately SHOCKED
to discover that there is a whole other nutritional community out there that
had MUCH better information on my predicament than I had! It was common
knowledge to every holistic MD, every herbalist, and even every giggling
high school girl clerking the local health food store that Prednisone and
sulfasalizine were, assuredly, bad for the gut in the short and long term.

This seemingly credible community advises that the "Gut" is the first and
most important line of medical defense, and that a sick gut at ANY location
is in fact made only WORSE by antibiotic sulfa drugs (sulfasalizine) and
Corticosteroid steroid drugs (Prednisone)! They also inform that relatively
disease free guts were under constant attack by much too liberally
prescribed antibiotics, chlorine in the tap water, and other needless
environmental insults that our unenlightened flesh is heir to.

These drugs make the individual sicker because, despite the fact that they
can reduce the trouble causing inflammation and make one FEEL a little
better -- they throw out the proverbial baby with the bath water. In fact,
they make the disease WORSE. In the first place they too blithely kill the
very necessary good bacteria along with bad bacteria. In the second place
the Prednisone suppresses the entire immune system so the whole individual
is vastly more prone to opportunistic disease and infection of ALL types...

The aforementioned *good* bacteria is a symbiotic animal evolved to live
with us (in our gut) and it is the only defense we have against a plethora
of parasites and infectious bacteria. The ever present Candida, for example,
proliferates when not held in check by the gut's good bacteria. Candida
produces colonies of yeast that take up parasitic residence in the lining of
the colon. These little bits of yeast not only decrease the functionality of
the affected gut and provide for more illness, they are ALSO absorbed into
the blood stream to take up residence in the liver, spleen, kidneys or even
the vagina. These harmful bacteria, liberated by the prescribed drugs, are
not good friends and neighbors.

This yeast leaking gut, or "leaky gut" (leaking EVERYTHING, by the way!)
makes the individual sick in other ways seemingly unrelated to the distant
problem in the bowels. Osteoporosis, diabetes, high blood pressure,
fibromyalia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and arthritis begin a long list of
the diseases that can be caused by a "leaky gut" syndrome. That list just
goes on and on.

It is no stretch, assuming that the list of diseases can in fact have this
common cause, that a healthy gut presupposes a healthy individual, and that
a healthy gut IS the first line of defense in a program of total health. As
an aside to the reader, perhaps it is the BOWEL and not the cardiovascular
system that should get the obsessive attention that the cardiovascular
system, surely, does.

Eventually returning to the hospital for the usual appointment, I confronted
my HMO doctor with this new information and explained to him how it seemed
to completely dovetail into my own, pretty vast, experience with what I must
now identify as the "Prednisone Lie." Each of the six times I had been
placed on the steroid Prednisone, I was told that it would "beat back the
Crohn's disease" and that after a few weeks of "HEALING" (ha!) I could come
off the dangerous steroid and the Crohn's would return... but it would "not
be as BAD." A lie, well meaning or no.

Well -- I had noticed that after any of the subsequent Prednisone treatments
that the Crohn's disease would actually be worse! Sulfur drugs and steroids
were making my disease more severe, was my experience. There was no
"healing." There was no *real* relief! I would anticipate the Prednisone for
some small temporary relief, ignoring the probability that I would actually
feel worse AFTER the Prednisone. Was there not something else?

At this point I began to beg the Doctor for ANYTHING that might help. He
looked me right in the eye, and, apparently oblivious to what I had told
him, suggested a steroid enema... I hung my head and walked out of his
office. He asked me where I was going. Not breaking stride, I almost told
him that maybe it was HE that was in need of that steroid enema...

I've never been back to the doctor again regarding my Crohn's disease. That
was about eighteen months ago. Instead, I went on a campaign of intense
research, open-minded evaluation and "what the hell" experimentation.

Now, I know that "what the hell" experimentation is exactly what the medical
community uses as an excuse to demonize food supplements; however, I would
not have had to *experiment*, at all, if more Doctors had not dug in their
arrogant heels, refusing to pursue cross-training in alternate nutritional
disciplines. Good reader, I was _driven_ to experimentation!

Searching the web, reading books on alternate medical methods, hanging out
at the local health food store, and trying all sorts of different herbal and
dietetic regimens put my doctor's reluctance into an unsettling new light.
I can understand how any MD might be loath to have an association with many
of the more far-out "crystal squeezing" and "aura examining" approaches.
Most of these approaches are likely born of arguable quackery. But I was
very disconcerted to discover that some very mainstream advice my doctors
should have been giving me -- COULD have been giving me... they were not.
All of these things that they SHOULD have been telling me would not
compromise best practice, denigrate their science, or get them in trouble
with an insurance company.

For example: My Doctors could have told me that sulfa drugs killed the
magical little critters that produce vitamin "K", out of whole cloth, as
still ANOTHER byproduct of their symbiotic process. Vitamin "K" is ESSENTIAL
for blood clotting. Vitamin "K" is CRUCIAL for people with colitis or the
more serious Crohn's. As I am a prone bleeder, which my doctors know, they
should have been telling me to take a supplement for "K" -- like Alfalfa, a
quality source. They said *nothing* about Vitamin "K". This is hardly best
practice, was not good science, and, it would seen to me, just the thing to
get them in trouble with their insurance companies.

Another example. Everyone with a gut disease such as mine should take a
supplement of chromium picolinate daily to increase the number of insulin
receptor sites. This is an easily implemented aid in sugar metabolism to
facilitate a digestion system already under extreme stress. This is not
snake oil, good reader, this is science with citation. Not a word from my
HMO Doctors though...

Still another example. Acidophilus should be taken daily to help replenish
the good bacteria that the sulfa drugs wipe out so indiscriminately. Not
one of the eight or ten doctors that I've had over the last eight years even
mentioned ONE of these things. And believe me -- I asked. More important,
I listened.

Believe me, also, when I say that I no longer take sulfasalizine or
Prednisone for my Crohn's disease. I took myself off of them on my own
recognizance. They were killing me -- not as quickly as the Crohn's would
have, but they were killing me nonetheless. That's what medicines do.
Hopefully the medicine prescribed for the bug kills the bug before it kills
the individual taking it... but most medicine kills -- everything and
everybody. The special seriousness of the CHRONIC disease becomes apparent
because no one can take a harsh medicine for life without that medicine
eventually killing them.

I still have Crohn's disease, but it is now just a minor inconvenience when
it rears its ugly head. It is no longer the life threatening, agony
inducing, and quality of life destroying condition that it had been for so
much of the past decade... What did I do?

I'll tell you what I DID, but it would be irresponsible of me if I did not
tell you what I am NOT. I am NOT a doctor. I am not otherwise
hyper-educated. I am NOT some kind of new age scientist with advanced
degrees and certifications. I am none of these things. I am, most simply,
a simple man with a debilitating disease that I have SECURED MY OWN RELIEF
FROM.

Certified only in rationality, I have eyes and can see. I have ears and can
hear. While only a retired Army Helicopter pilot, I can read, study, and
keep an eye to a scientific approach...

I have no qualification... so consider this only as a good faith report
from the field on an approach to Bowel disease that worked, splendidly, for
one human being... me.

...But the results of this approach were so splendid, impressive and
dazzling for ME that I would be equally remiss and irresponsible if I did
not share them with YOU, now. Truly, If I didn't know what YOU knew about
actual relief from Crohn's (if the shoe was on the other foot) I'd be HIGHLY
disappointed that you didn't let ME know!

Moreover, I'm not shilling for any health food companies, getting any
compensation for suspicious endorsements, nor am I grinding any kind of
personal axe. I make this report only because it worked so readily, quickly
and decisively with me. I could make NO guarantee that it will work with
you... no one can. But if I am ANY measure at all, then the pedestrian
bowel disease sufferer can be feeling a LOT better than they do now; I would
most assuredly put my money on that.

Please give a try to as many of the following recommendations as you can.
Check them with your doctor if you want to; In fact I encourage that. I've
listed them here in what I believe is some kind of importance, but if you
only want to try ONE, do not pass on the BOVINE COLOSTRUM. That was the
corner-turner for me. It is supposed to be completely safe (I've come to
understand), and is contraindicated for NOTHING. That is to say you can
take it with ANYTHING. Drawn from mother's milk in the first 24 to 72 hours
after the birth of the calf, one can even take it if they are lactose
intolerant!

Colostrum is a miracle substance. It's that initial shot of colostrum in
its mother's milk that gets the newborn antelope or zebra from the surface
of the savanna and, within minutes, running with its mother from the hyenas
and lions! Without it, it is barely be able to stand and would die almost
immediately. Colostrum is a promoter of immune enhancing qualities
facilitating natural chemical health mechanisms. These mechanisms cover the
antiviral, the antibacterial, the anti-inflammatory, and the anti-fungal.
Additionally, colostrum is a POTENT anti-oxidant. This is only the tip of
the iceberg as regards what I must testify now to be some extraordinarily
efficacious stuff!

Bovine colostrum is at least twenty times stronger than the colostrum that
comes from the human animal, as is evidenced by the astonishing performance
of newborn quadrupeds out on the African Savanna! Humans have evolved a
capacity to get 50% of the crucial colostrum before birth and the other half
in the milk like the rest of mammalia. The bovines give it ALL in the
mother's milk.

This is not new information. Humans have LONG known the benefits of bovine
colostrum as a quality promoter of natural health and REAL healing. The
upper castes in India have been using the substance for thousands of years,
and this is remembering the strong vegan contingent that India supports. In
other words, even a vegetarian can consume it with a clear conscience. And
don't worry about the calves getting shorted their share of colostrum. The
calves are not effected the same way BEES are not effected regarding their
honey. There's always enough colostrum the same way there is always enough
honey. Nature makes more than enough, naturally, but I digress. Let me get
on with this list...

1. Colostrum -- MORE on colostrum.

The kind I take is called "New Life" Colostrum. I chose this one because my
research indicated that I could have some assurance that I was actually
getting what I was paying for. This should always be a concern when buying
a consumable, as we shall see... some of these vitamins, herbs, and
supplements that are commonly bought (and that are discussed here) are many
times not only worthless, they are harmful in the aggregate and in the
extreme! This practice is more insidious than one would imagine...

The aforementioned colostrum is purchased in gelatin capsules, which are
taken on an empty stomach to facilitate their release in the intestine, and
so NOT be destroyed in the stomach by the stomach's acid. Unlike SOME of
the harsher therapies I endured that required massive doses for WEEKS or
MONTHS to see even barely perceptible improvement, the colostrum worked,
with me, OVERNIGHT!

That's right, ladies and gentlemen, this reporter thinks that the garden
variety individual could expect at least a 50% and as much as a 70%
improvement in their colitis or Crohn's, overnight! I say this based
entirely on my own documented experience, but I would additionally say that
the garden variety Crohn's sufferer would see a 70% to 90% improvement in 72
hours. Yes! It happened to me!

A sample of one is not science, I know. Still, it happened to me.

Making no attempt to dispense medical advice that I am, admittedly, not
competent to give -- one should have weaned themselves from the Prednisone
and stopped taking sulfasalizine the day they start the colostrum. Three
days are worth the test, and if it (astonishingly) does not work for you,
you can, sadly, go back to them. This reporter would predict that one would
not, however. Prepare to be amazed!

Prepare to feel better physically. Prepare to have your depressions
disappear because Colostum safely promotes the production and enhances the
longevity of seritonin and dopamine in the brain. Necessary for many other
important functions, these are also Nature's very own feel-good drugs. If
you could buy them on the street they would be ILLEGAL. Colostrum helps the
body make the stuff. And Instead of laying around and drooling with the
usual drug treatments for depression, eat colostrum and have the justified
compulsion to get up and BOOGIE! I did! I'd predict that you would, too!

2. One small glass of red wine, once a day with a meal. That's one four
once glass. Not two glasses because you're a big guy. Not an eight ounce
glass. Not a couple of indiscriminate pulls from the bottle... a small
amount of dry, dark Red wine facilitates the gut in a manner that
complements the colostrum. The reader can see how close to the top of the
list it is to get an idea regarding its effectiveness.

3. Bee products

OK! It is at about this point in the essay where the reader may go,
"uh-oh," and begin to wonder if we're all going to join hands and start
chanting or something. You know, begin to "channel the trans-dimensional
warp energies of the crystal squeezers..." I know I did. I thought bee
products were so much new age crap... until I actually tried them. Then I
discovered them to have such a positively profound effect on me that I now
see Shirley Maclaine in a whole new light!

Seriously, these bee products, seemingly, have magical properties. They
certainly have on me. This becomes understandable when one has even a quick
look at their science. I'm going to talk about three: Royal Jelly, Bee
Pollen, and Bee Propolis.

Royal Jelly -- Not only a very good and USABLE vitamin supplement, it is
also loaded with esoteric substances that enhance the immune system. These
substances are found nowhere else on earth, and they cannot be synthesized
in a laboratory. Purchased freeze dried in capsule form is the most
convenient, but it can also be acquired in a fresh form, mixed with honey to
keep the Royal Jelly fresh. It can be used to sweeten things, of course,
but NEVER anything hot. Heat degrades the royal jelly.

Additionally, royal jelly is a positive attitude adjuster in a manner
similar to colostrum. I've no science to back this up, but for me it seemed
to enhance and complement the positive effects of the colostrum to achieve a
real synergy with it! I use both the capsules and the honey-mix... and it
can get a little pricey until I compare the very reasonable price of it to
the benefits received. For me, it is a small price to pay.

Bee Pollen -- Never buy a hard-pressed bee pollen tablet at Walmart... the
tablet is heated in the process and the pollen is degraded. Order granulated
bee pollen from a trusted WEB location, or get it at a quality health food
store. Try to be assured that you are getting what you pay for... anything
*good* has a sociopath trying to counterfeit it...

Mix the bee pollen with anything cold, or eat it raw like I do. The taste
is just not describable. I would liken it to dry marmalade with a hint of
saffron and something else familiar, but you just can't pin it down or even
put a finger on it. It's not really sweet... it's something else... like I
said -- impossible to describe. Don't be surprised if you have a minor
spiritual epiphany. or maybe not.

Bee Propolis -- Bees, as the reader well knows, live in tightly packed and
efficient communes with individual members flying out to all sorts of
hazardous environments in busy search for their pollen. These environments
are fraught with all manner of biological hazard and fungal infestation, but
these infections just don't seem to make it back to the hive. This
meticulous housekeeping is achieved with a substance that the bees make
called -- propolis. This substance actually keeps the bee hive more sterile
than an operating room.

Not all bees search for pollen. Some of the bees are assigned to go to
different plants and trees to collect a cocktail of different substances
that they turn into propolis as another result of their strange kind of bee
alchemy. This propolis is smeared over every square centimeter of the
interior of the hive. All the bees brush up against this substance and so
become immunized. This substance is antibacterial, anti-fungal and enhances
the general health and fastidiousness from individual bee to the entire
hive.

This reporter can testify to this same enhanced internal *fastidiousness* as
a result of ingesting this substance. It would be the one made optional if
money needed to be saved, perhaps, but the benefits I seem to be reaping
make this just one more small price to pay. I love the stuff.

Finally, with regard to Bee Products, if the reader is dietetically
reactionary, conservative, or reluctant to try them... consider that
everybody's FAVORITE conservative, Ronald Reagan, swore by them as a major
contributor to the excellent physical health that he very likely STILL
enjoys... forgetting for a moment the alleged difficulty he is having with
Alzheimer's. Regardless, he still cuts wood!

4. Flax seed -- this seed, ground fresh in a coffee grinder is then eaten
right away in something cold. This is another substance that heat degrades.
This is a very cheap way to get the required amounts of the Omega 3 and 6
fatty acids. The research that I've done indicates that if healthy people
ate three tablespoons of freshly ground flax seed every day they would
probably NEVER develop ANY kind of bowel disease. This reporter seems to be
bearing that out, in fact. Now this doesn't mean that the individual can
run out and mainline Colonel Sanders, but it does mean that a halfway
conscientious diet including flax seed will provide for adequate health.

5. Tap Water -- Stop drinking it or cooking with it. Use Distilled water
for these things. Tap water is really only clean enough to bath in,
anymore. Tap water has become such a noxious cocktail of animal hormones,
hormone mimics, antibiotics, fluorine, and chlorine that it could be the
eventual death of us all.

6. Chromium Picolinate -- mentioned earlier, is taken at a dosage of 200
micro-milligrams daily. Don't buy Naturerite at your neighborhood Winn
Dixie. Buy a good brand in a health food store or a trusted location on the
WEB. Avoid brands that have dicalcium phosphate (it BLOCKS the use of
several other key vitamins) or calcium carbonate (it contains LEAD!).

Like it does in "Tums" and some other antacids, the carbonate prohibits the
acid in the stomach that is REQUIRED for some vitamin use and mineral
absorption. The human body does not absorb the calcium in "Tums" like the
ads say. The stomach acid that is required for the body to utilize the
calcium is neutralized by the carbonate, rendering the calcium useless to
the body. In another time and place one might say that getting the
necessary calcium via a Tum's tablet is a rank obfuscation -- a lie by
another name.

Most people with digestion problems suffer from TOO LITTLE acid anyway, NOT
too much, especially as the sufferer gets older. Tums may be a detractor to
health. I've sworn off of it completely, and I'm not looking back. But
then, I don't get indigestion anymore, anyway.

7. Acidophilus -- mentioned earlier in the essay, I've found the non-dairy
forms to be the best.

8. Garlic -- Kyolic Garlic is pretty good. Isn't it interesting how sulfa
drugs are harmful to the gut, but sulfur FOODS like garlic and onions are
natural antibiotics that sooth and help heal the colon?

9. Alfalfa -- also mentioned earlier, it supplies vitamin "K" and
chlorophyll, which promotes _real_ healing.

10. Tea -- Green Tea, rich in anti-oxidants or slippery elm tea... pau de'
arco tea. All good stuff.

11. Olive oil -- should be placed higher on the list perhaps. Olive oil is
one of the few fats that is GOOD to consume. It is not in the same class as
hydrogenated vegetable oil which the body treats like an ecological
disaster -- pasting the vicious substance on ones artery walls in the form
of a thick plaque and leading to a HOST of other medical problems...
Hydrogenated vegetable oil deserves a critical essay all its own.

One can get really creative with olive oil and figure ways to use it where
one might have previously used oil, fat, or margarine. Contrary to popular
belief you can even BAKE with olive oil. And yes Virginia, it is perfectly
possible to FRY food at a lower temperature with olive oil. It doesn't
MATTER that more oil is picked up in the food! It tastes GREAT, and it's
GOOD for you. It actually sucks the plaque off your artery walls!

12. Sugar --

OK -- this is a tough one. Never use Saccharin, Equal or refined sugar.
The hazards of these substances is well known and well documented. Refined
sugar, thought safe as mothers milk and discovered today (?), might even be
labeled as a hazardous food substance -- right up there with the dreaded MSG
(monosodium glutemate).

Use, rather, zero calorie and glycemic zero "Stevia" extract. It can be
found at numerous locations on the WEB. It is a GREAT substitute for
"Equal" because it's natural.

The reader is reminded that Saccharin, Equal (aspartame) or refined sugar --
like aspirin, hydrogenated vegetable oil, Pepsid AC... (and a thousand other
ubiquitous everyday items that seem innocuous), are NOT harmless at all.
They are NOT found in nature, so they put a HUGE strain on the liver and the
digestive system because the associated organs don't have a clue how to deal
with them.

If the reader feels they must continue to use sugar, as I most certainly do,
then use a sugar with a low glycemic number like fructose or Tupelo honey.
I don't mean to insult the reader's intelligence, but let me explain a
little bit about the glycemic numbers, how they pertain to sugar, and like
Paul Harvey, a little bit of the rest of the story...

The lower the glycemic number of the sugar article, the less insulin has to
be arduously manufactured by special bodies on the pancreas to deal with it.
Insulin, remember, maintains a thin range of the level of raw sugar in the
blood... the lower that glycemic number, the better. Less is definitely
more. And hear it first here... insulin makes you FAT!

Low glycemic fructose is number 32 on the official scale while "mother's
own" refined white table sugar is at an astonishingly hefty 92! Any WONDER
why your kid is bouncing off the walls with hyper activity or is sitting
around lethargically getting fat? Both are due to the same substance. A
reaction to that is to give that hyper active kid more drugs to cool them
out, and put the fat kid on an unnecessary diet, but that's a digression AND
a whole other paper...

The rest of the story? The reader must use caution in a sugary subterfuge
of real corporate chicanery. An evil trick the *wholesome* juice
manufacturer (like Ocean Spray) will employ is to advertise the health
benefits of "100% Juice" sweetened with fructose. The only problem is that
the sweet substance that they are using is a cheap concentrated grape juice
which STILL has a high glycemic value of close to 90. In other words, Ocean
Spray's "fructose" is almost as bad as table sugar, even though it is still
technically 100% juice.

This begins to sound a little LESS like truth in adverting, and a little
MORE like bald fraud, but industry is fraught with this kind subterfuge. It
goes on under the readers nose all the time. Wait until the reader sees
what goes on with multiple vitamins, minerals and MILK!

13. Multiple Vitamins / Minerals -- Taking a quality Multiple Vitamin or
Mineral is essential. A vegetarian multivitamin, or Solaray non-iron is
what I would recommend.

This writer hesitates to even mention the proceeding for two reasons: the
first reason concerns the cognitive dissonance most people suffer when they
begin to realize that what they have trusted well BEFORE is causing them
harm NOW, and has always BEEN causing them harm. Most people,
understandably, aren't willing to try to wrap their minds around that. Most
people won't want to hear what I would try to tell them.

I understand completely. It is very upsetting to find out that the trusted
and popular major corporation has, in actuality, been lying to the reader,
cheating the reader, and causing the reader physical harm. It does that in
full knowledge of what is being done, the harm that it will cause, and the
consequences of its action -- which can be dire... but it goes, blithely,
on, regardless. Allow a small digression...

Consider our reactionary program of three strikes to life imprisonment for
the hapless individual, and that the third strike is for stealing a
felonious *cupcake*... Judgement is swift, immediate, and harsh! Match
that against a major corporation like GE (you remember, they're the bunch
that "brings good things to light") They're BLESSED with a bizarro program
of 37 strikes and then continue to remain, arrogantly, at bat!

Check the record! GE is always towards the top of the list in the amount of
environmental complaints filed against it. i.e. causing sickness to people
and facilitating harm to the environment. They are INFAMOUS for paying
people off, dragging righteous lawsuits out for years, and paying pollution
fines over and over (because it is cheaper to pay the fine than to be in
lawful compliance... regardless that people are being made ill). No one
from GE ever goes to jail, though... That ballgame just plays on...

The second reason I don't like to bring it up is that it raises my blood
pressure when I think about all those wasted years that I depended on
products like Centrum, One-a-Day, and even the Flinstone's Multiple Vitamins
like they were safe, sure, and quality products. They were not. I get
depressed thinking about the millions of people throwing their money away,
and actually harming themselves taking these products, thinking that they
were getting much more utility from them. They are not.

Here's the skinny, good reader, why most if not all of the vitamins and
minerals that one gets at the grocery store are nearly useless. Go get your
Theragram, Centrum, One-a-Day or Flintstone's bottle, a magnifying glass,
and get prepared to do a little label reading. We'll go supplement by
supplement.

Vitamin "E" -- Your trusted grocery store vitamin is likely a variety
called "DL"-alpha tacopheryl. This form is not readily used by the body.
The form "D"- alpha tacopheryl (quotes for emphasis, notice the "L" in the
former tacopheryl and the absence of it in the latter) is the preferred
form.

Sure, you spend a few pennies LESS for the "DL", but the body doesn't
want to use it! What's the point? ...Corporate profits?

Phosphorus -- If your multiple vitamin contain phosphorus it is no good.
There is already abundant phosphorus in even a poor diet, and too MUCH
phosphorus throws off a delicate calcium balance otherwise regulated by the
body.

...Still checking your bottle? Calcium, magnesium, zinc, selenium, copper,
manganese, chromium, and potassium are likely all in the wrong form for
COMPLETE nutritional utilization. If the bottle just mentions the name of
the mineral all by itself WITHOUT the suffix "citrate" or "picolinate" etc,
it may be a waste of money. If the manufacturer is not going to inform the
consumer what kind of mineral SPECIFICALLY that it is using in the product,
then the consumer should be SUSPICIOUS that the mineral used is an inferior
form.

Beware, there are *bad* suffixes. The *bad* suffixes "carbonate" and
"phosphate" signal forms of the supplement that degrades vitamin utilization
or blocks the utilization of other key vitamins. Conversely, *good*
suffixes for the vitamins include "citratemalate," "aspartate,"
"asporotate,"
"chromate GTF," and "glycinate," et al, and in addition to the preferred
citrate or picolinate .

Still reading your bottle? How many of the inferior forms did you find? Do
you feel betrayed? Feel VERY betrayed.

A quick aside to the reader: Don't be put off by all the confusing words and
suffixes. If the reader finds that the Vitamin "E" and the calcium are the
correct kind then the reader could probably assume that they are in a
quality product and the other stuff will be good too. That's been this
writers experience, but -- buyer beware!

Returning to the subject, most conscientious young women are going to try to
avoid the bone weakening disaster of osteoporosis, and well they should.
They are NOT going to get the job done; however, by taking a grocery store
multiple vitamin, copiously consuming any kind of dairy product, or by
eating ANY amount of "Tums." They are throwing their money down the toilet,
literally, and are even causing themselves physical harm...

Calcium carbonate (remember the *bad* suffixes?), the variety of calcium
found in TUMS is NOT "something your body needs anyway." In order to absorb
calcium at all (and it's necessary to have it in the proper form, remember)
the body must utilize copious amounts of stomach acid. The required acid
has been neutralized by the carbonate; however, so the calcium CANNOT BE
ABSORBED. The only thing that IS absorbed from the carbonate is the LEAD...
and is that "something your body needs anyway"? I'm no doctor, remember,
just a sufferer of doctors, but I think not...

Additionally, the phosphate in the calcium blocks many OTHER necessary
vitamins. This deceptive, misleading, and plainly fraudulent practice is
rife in the food industry. Any wonder why this writer gets so angry and
depressed and, up until just recently, was so ill? Consider, now, the much
but inexplicably lauded dairy industry!

14. Dairy --

OK -- at last and finally, we come upon the most successfully campaigned
razzle-dazzles of all time. It's a cruel, dirtily fought campaign of bald
faced lies, clever obfuscation, and crass influence peddling. Behold the
men behind the marketing who knowingly and inaccurately pontificate that
"Milk does a body good" while they ponder the "power of cheese..." Power to
do _no_ good, more accurately...

Dairy is an IDIOTIC way to expect to get calcium into your bones because any
calcium that is delivered to the body in animal protein (like cow's milk --
exactly) causes the kidneys to flush that calcium from the overall system
via the nearest urinal or water closet. Even large quantities of calcium
arriving in this manner makes no difference. It's delivery vector is animal
protein, so it is gone! Milk actually leaches calcium out of the bones at
the same time that it's supposed to be trying to put it in. ...Still doing
a body good?

Conversely, even small amounts of calcium in vegetable form (soy products,
broccoli and other crusiferous vegetables) has a very high percentage of
that calcium getting right where it needs to be. Spinach (Popeye was
right!) does as advertised.

So the dairy industry gives pause and has us beg the question. Why consume
a food like milk that is NOT good for you (lactose intolerance, bad
cholesterol, homogenization atomizing the fat into perfect little plaque
scales to plug up the reader's arteries... don't get me started, milk is its
own paper...). After a very young age milk is more indigestible and is an
overall detriment to health. Never drink milk again, and never look back.

So. Got milk? I hope not...

That's more than enough regarding my struggle _with_ and my personal relief
_from_ my Bowel disease. It is a relief that I hope I was able to share with
you if you are a fellow sufferer. At least, one in ten of you ARE.

Truly, I was living a hell on Earth until I discovered colostrum. In turn,
the nutritional community that turned me on to Colostrum has turned me on to
a host of other quality-of-life enhancing substances that I can take with a
lot more safety (and a lot more effectively) than Prednisone or
sulfasalizine. Absolutely, these new nutritional substances have been a true
turn-around and an even truer corner turner for me!

I understand that old cliche "a new lease on life," like I never had before.
In fact it's no longer a cliche. I HAVE that new lease. I think the
suffering reader can too.

I also have a new appreciation for the word irony. How is it that the eight
or ten doctors that I suffered so plainly in front of could (or would) not
even HINT at a relief that I had to find on my own and by myself. The
implications of that are puzzling, worrying, and not a little disappointing.
Read on!

I have to admit when I saw the size of this post I was a little
apprehensive about what it's substance would be like (there's
usually an inverse proportion law on the net), but I thought that
was very well thought out and informative. Since most people still
connect to the internet thru slow phonelines, I would suggest if
you get the urge to post it multiple times that putting it up on a website
and providing a link rather would endear you to people who download
these messages. Plus it would be an interesting thing for people
doing web searches to come across.

Or better yet break down the sections and post seperately. That way it
will be easier to discuss each part in turn.

IHowdy Alan and Alfred not a bad posting.
But you should stick with science a little more closely cause there were a
few
falses in there but it's all a matter of learning and I'm glad to see that
your
trying to help out others. When I got better i didn't want anything to even
remind me of the time I had with my crohn's disease.
The dl Vitamin E is not useless but the natural form of Vitamin E
d-alpha-tocopherol has shown in clincal studies that it unequivocally raises
serum vitamin E levels 40% higher and red blood cell levels 300% higher than
the synthetic form.
The list is endless on superiorforms of ingredients eg. mineral ascorbate
forms of vitamin C is better than ascorbic acid.Zinc picolinate is far
better than zinc
sulphate.etc. etc.
Taking tums for your calcium is not a good idea, not because calcium
carbonate will contain lead cause not all sources will, but because in order
for your body to use calcium it also has to have a whack of other nutrients
in balance with the calcium in order for you to be able to use it.
Magnesium, Boron, Vitamin D, etc etc just to name a few or else you can
forget about your
bones getting any benefit from the supplement. For someone young and who has
a good digestive system a well balanced calcium carbonate form is not all
that bad a choice. The problem lies in finding a well balanced supplement.
Calcium citrate is a better choice for us IBD'ers.
Speaking of supplements if the vitmin you are recommending the Sloaray
without iron is anything like the solaray spectro multi-vita-min then it is
not a very good one to recommend.Compare it to the number 1 recommended
multi the USANA Essentials and you will be quite surprised at the
difference.

Bee Pollen I have not looked at for a long time because what pollen ? There
are hundreds of different types, each with a distinct chemical structure.
Which is why researchers are unable to repeat any studies because they can't
repeat the pollen.Although some other countries may have a better handle on
pollen.
I just haven't bothered looking at it again as a remedy of any kind.

As for Bovine Colostrom
It has been called mother's
gold-colostrum, a thick, yellow substance that is produced toward the end of
a female's pregnancy and is emitted by her mammary glands during the first
48 hours after giving birth. While humans produce small amounts of
colostrum, a cow produces approximately nine gallons during the first
thirty-six hours after giving birth. Each drop contains: immunoglobulins,
growth factors, antibodies, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, amino acids, and
other special substances designed to "prime" the body to face a lifetime of
invasion by various microorganisms and environmental toxins bent on
destruction.

It sounds great, but because of the short-term nature of the research, no
one knows what long term effects bovine colostrum has. Evidence of its
efficacy is very preliminary. There is some research that shows it can have
some effectiveness in helping a very select group of individuals with
certain diseases. In addition, these studies used a very controled and
potent pharmaceutical grade bovine colostrum. So it's not something I would
ever recommend yet.

got to go sorry if i seemed a little picky but if you ever want to swap
notes on nutrition just send me a Email I love the subject.

Many ISP's out there, and I think AOL might be one of them, have spam
filters that assume really long messages like that are spam, so you
never see them.
