Reuters--April 23, 2009.

Unmoderated newsgroups have long been held to be
havens of dangerous and quack medical disinformation,
conspiracy therorists, spammers, trolls, and crackpots with mental illnesses
and personality disorders who sometimes make thousands of posts per year
and argue harshly with anyone desiring to be abused.
A recent study by the John's Hopkins School of Social
Medicine with over 3100 subjects from the Baltimore, Richmond,
and Washington, DC area who use unmoderated newsgroups
found a very high percentage of personality disorders and
psychyosis among regular newsgroup posters. A committee
of physicians and specialists found many disinformational
and medically dangerous posts at 6 randomly chosen
unmoderated medical based newsgroups. Their suggestion
were for people to avoid unmoderated medical-based newsgroups
and get their information elsewhere such as Medline, WebMD.

Oh GIVE IT A BREAK! DO YOU THINK EVERYONE IS AS DUMB AS YOU? Anyone
who signs with a fictitious name such
as "George Orwell" well, it really is hard for me to take YOU
seriously....

Have to go along with the study.
Unmoderated newsgroups are shark infested
waters with plenty of loons. That's a given.

I'd like to make several observations here:
(1) Are you also one of the sharks and loons you refer to? Since this is an
unmoderated newsgroup, which you said was dangerous, can we believe you?
(2) All things Internet can be dangerous. In many if not most cases you
cannot reliably tell if information you receive is genuine or fraudulent. It
is for the thinking person.
(3) Yes, you can get those "sharks and loons" on an unmoderated newsgroup,
but you will also get uncensored interchange of ideas, not stifled by the
dogma of the medical profession. You will also get input from people who
have suffered from the medical condition, and have learnt from it, and want
to pass on what they learnt to others. As I said in Item 2, it is for the
thinking person.
(4) If you spend a few weeks on any medical newsgroup, you soon disover who
the reputable people are, and they are not necessarily those with medical
degrees after their name.
(5) When I was diagnosed with diabetes in 1995, I soon found appropriate
newsgroups. These have doubtlessly helped me survive well beyond what I feel
th medical profession offered me. I am now reading with great interest
information selflessly supplied by the good people here, in an effort to
understand the condition of a loved family member.
(6) Would you trust a moderated newsgroup with your health? For that matter,
would you put your faith in a doctor for anything other than a head cold?

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many good people
posting their wisdom on this newsgroup. Please keep on posting, guys!

Are you the same guy that said this news-group was going away?
