Screw these people. My grandfather immigrated from Scotland in the
1880s, and my family has been pro-British ever since. My father even
tried to join the RAF in 1940 during WW2 (which technically was
treason against the US, to serve in a foreign military during our
neutrality period), and I have many Internet British friends today.
Under this criteria, I suppose that I and my Mexican-born wife should
be thrown out of the US for not having the same kind of cultural
loyalties to the US which Sarah Palin says are the "real America".
Actually, it's quite pathetic. Just because you are an unemployed
white person from a scruffy rust belt British town does not give you
an excuse to hate immigrants, who in Britain (compared to here) are
for the most part, LEGAL.
The most telling thing was the cabbie who said (in so many words) "I
don't like him, but he's RIGHT, you know". That's exactly what they
said about you-know-who with the Chaplin moustache in Berlin once.
This kind of ugliness always thrives in economic slumps. Brits are no
more immune to racism than anyone else. No, wrong. They are the MOST
racist culture on earth. They still use "Pakis" and "niggers" in
common polite parlance.
My point? Racism against immigrants is everywhere. Lou Dobbs is about
to be fired from CNN, which is why why he tried to bail to FOX News,
but they don't want him, either, especially after his dust-up with
John Stossel and his complete excoriation by FOX News' Geraldo Rivera
last week. Did you see that? PRICELESS.

OK, BNP, British National Party. Now I get it. But I don't,
really. Who are these clowns? Don't fret. Angry uneducated middle-
aged white British men
have never been a threat to anybody. They are powerless, and this is
what pisses them off. At least Hitler had a contingent of young Aryan
virgins as cheerleaders; these guys don't.

The BNP are neofascists, and actually they're gaining a rather
alarming amount of power. They're allied with other neofascist
groups all over Western Europe, and even here in the US, and
bear some watching.

Unfortunately you mis-cite.
Only 4% would definitely consider it, not the 1 in 5 you cite.
However, note the final paragraph:
YouGov polled 1,314 voters across Britain on Oct. 22-23
after Question Time aired. The data was weighted to
conform with the U.K.s demographic profile, the paper
said, without giving a margin of error.

And 3% would "probably" consider it, and 15% were "possible
voters" for the BNP. Which adds up to 22%. I guess it depends
on what you mean by "seriously" consider, but I'd put "possible
voters" in that category.
And however you interpret that: given the nature of the BNP, I'd
take even "possible voter" as pretty alarming. But I do take
your point about the interpretation of the level of appeal being
kind of subjective here.
