I had the seeds in 10/06 and then the IMRT through November and December. The PSA went way down, then way up, then way down, then up then down, down, down. I just got the latest result: <0.1, finally.

PSA dx 13.8
seeds 10/23/06
3.2 (1/23/07)
2.2 (4/23/07)
2.5 (10/23/07)
3.2 (1/23/08)
3.5 (4/23/08)
5.6 (6/26/08)
7.5 (10/23/08)
6.0 (11/23/08)
3.7 (3/15/09)
3.4 (7/23/09)
2.3 (11/6/09)
2.7 (3/23/10)
3.7 (7/25/10)
2.4 (10/16/10)
0.8 (2/22/11)
0.5 (10/17/11)
0.2 (5/3/12)
0.2 (10/24/12)
<0.1 (5/3/13)

I like to tell this story in case others have a radiation bounce. My onc was about ready to send me for ADT when I went up to 7.5. I could see it in his eyes. He thought we had failed. But I waited. The second bounce, though smaller, scared me more than the first, because it was almost four years after seeds. Moral: Don't jump the gun on ADT.

Excellent news!

I had some PSA bounces of my own and also took about six years to reach
nadir, but didn't have anything as high as 7.5. My highest bounce was
1.8, but I have heard of a man with a PSA bounce up to 16.

One explanation I've heard for these bounces is that tumor cells produce
more PSA when under stress. Radiation can take a long time to kill
cells, even years. So when groups of cells finally begin to die, they
increase their PSA production.

Another explanation I've heard is that inflammation of the prostate
(prostatitis) can and does occur after radiation (due to the radiation)
and can continue to occur years later (due to some of the same reasons
that prostatitis occurs in healthy men.) Prostatitis of course does not
occur to men whose prostates were removed by surgery.
