I'm not sure if you've heard about the latest video that Autism Speaks
has released, but I am posting the link here for your viewing pleasure
(or displeasure as I personally found): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDdcDlQVYtM

To say that it has sparked some ire is a bit of an understatement...

What are your thoughts?

That video left me sitting somewhere between despair and rage. WTF and
WTH? *Why* would anyone think this is OK? How are my kids ever going
to be accepted when this is the image people are exposed to.

I did find it very telling, though to hear what "autism" had to say in
a video endorsed by "Autism Speaks." It certainly isn't what autism
says in my house.

Filth. Disgusting.

My friend wrote a letter to the Prime Minister of Australia (is that
what you guys call your head of state?) over this. Great letter.

That was my question too: how are autistic children and adults ever
going to be accepted when this is the type of hate propaganda that
keeps getting put out there in the media, etc.?

Autism is not a picnic, it's not fun and I won't sugar coat that. I
get it.

Does "autism awareness and advocacy" have to be so hateful, though?

I like your words "Filth" and "Disgusting" because they fit my
sentiments on this video. :^)

No, they call her Queen (Elizabeth II). A minister is never head of
state, as far as I'm aware.

Would she not be Elizabeth I of Australia, just as James VI of Scotland was

Perhaps she should, but apparently she is not:

This is the worst video about autism that I have seen although their
first one was pretty bad as well. Scare tactics designed to get
people to donate when they don't use the money for anything that
really helps autistic people.

Utterly bizarre, by that logic Edward the Confessor would have been King of
Australia even before anyone on this side of the world knew it existed!

I'm a bit late on 8-ball here (life got in the way), but this is seriously,
profoundly, disturbing! Remove the word "autism" and replace it with any
other disability, and people would be incensed (as they _should_ be). But
this is Autism Speaks, the darling of the entertainment elite; with Jenny
McCarthy, Oprah, Dr Phil and all the other so-called gurus that people turn
to for their enlightenment. Brainwashing at it's finest! You know if Oprah
and Dr Plil say so, it must be true! Why they support J McC and the Autism
Speaks ilk is beyond me. Meanwhile, the autistic adults continue to be
silenced when they object to these hateful campaigns.

Veteran status? That's a new one to me.

Whatever she'd be of Australia, it wouldn't be Elizabeth I. Monarchs
who are the first monarch of that country to hold the name only get the
numeral in retrospect once a second of that name comes along. IOW,
Elizabeth I (the English Elizabeth I) was just Elizabeth until Elizabeth
II came to the throne (which involved the retitling of at least one
history book that I know of).

However, it's a fair point; yes, I think she should be 'Elizabeth' of
Australia. Interestingly, the same should be true of Scotland; I've
wondered before whether it is or not.

All the best,

Sarah

But how do we *know* that nobody ever said on their deathbed that they
wished they'd spent more time at the office?

Well, Frederick I has a numeral although there hasn't any other
Frederick:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frederick_I_of_Sweden

On the other hand, Sigismund is known as just Sigismund in Sweden but
as Sigismund III Vasa in Poland:
