I was "babysitting" my 9 year old grandson earlier this week, and I told
him, "I'll get out some paints and paper, and you can paint a Christmas
present for your Mommy." So while I was looking for a suitable frame for
his art piece, he carefully painted a yellow box with a bright red ribbon
crossing it in the typical x pattern, and a big red bow tied at the top. It
was maybe my first experience in understanding that while I had imagined him
painting a snowman or a boat or something, he followed my instructions
literally. And I'm sure that's the best Christmas present his mother got.
