Merry Christmas--Alone at last!

big snowstorm and her flight was cancelled and she ended up staying an extra
*5 days!* She went back home to the big extended family she lives with
yesterday. I love my daughter very much but I am so happy to have my life
back. My space. My apartment. My little routine. Merry Christmas to all
of you.
I'm Jewish and don't celebrate Jesus' birthday, but I think it's ridiculous
to say "Happy Holidays" when you really mean "I wish you all a very happy
and peaceful day on December 25!"

family compromise is to recognize the season as solstice
and celebrate the giving of presents at the most convenient time
but son wanted to light the menorah this year, so we did that too

I'm happy about the solstice, though, because now it gets dark at 4:30
instead of 4:15 p.m., so we're on our way back to lighter days.

25th December. Middle of winter. There's always been a festival (in Britain
at least) on, or around, that date. Call it what you like - Solstice,
Yuletide, Christmas... it's a national holiday whatever your religion. I get
time off work, and I spend some of it with family, some of it with friends,
and some of it on my own.
I celebrate Christmas because everyone else does. It's unavoidable. And I
can appreciate the Nativity myth, even if I can't believe in it.

it was too dangerous to go up the mountain to where my Mom and brother are,
for dinner. Planning on a Sunday visit instead. Know my Christmas Prezzie
from Mom anyways. Getting a FlipCam Ultra from Flip Video Camcorders. It's a
compact pocket camcorder that just flips open for use.

Merry Christmas. This has been a weird Christmas as we are in the
throes of moving house to another State, with the added complication
that the destination is far from built, so most stuff will go into
storage for an extended period. So there are boxes everywhere, and
much stuff already packed.
Best wishes for the New Year to all. I intend to spend New Years Eve
driving a car & caravan to our new city. New Years Day will no doubt
be spent recovering.

Did you light one of those candle things for Hannukah?
I had intended to celebrate the solstice in some way, but
was busy (running around like a chicken with its head cut off)
shopping and preparing for Xmas since much of the extended
family is christian. All i managed was to go for a walk in
the snow, glance up at the crescent moon, and remember that
that was the longest night, the most tilted away from the sun
that this hemisphere gets. More like "observe" than "celebrate".
But I suppose an observance counts for ..something..,
at least psychologically.

I don't light candles because I am afraid the cat will knock them over and
burn the house down. I do light an electric window display after saying the
blessing. I don't want to give you the impression that I am religious. Far
from it. I don't believe in God. However, in the Jewish religion, we are
taught that God doesn't care whether you believe in him or not. He only
cares about what you *do*. I like this.

In Judaism we tend to talk about "observing" the holidays rather than
"celebrating" them. Celebrating is like for a wedding, a bar/bar mitzvah,
birth of a baby, etc.
But for me personally I'd be happier without any holidays, religious or
secular. It's hard enough to manage my life without the extra burden of
holiday rituals, most of which are IMO stupid and I don't even understand
why people actually enjoy them.
As I said before I am happy we have passed the solstice, so that it won't
get dark so early any more. But it doesn't make me want to get dressed up
in fancy clothes and go out and get shitfaced. That's why I'm weird (:^)
