Narratives are not merely representational
Strings of linear causality, but analogues of mental experience,
Thinking, or even a process less governed
By the will to a destination. What so many these days
Call non-narrative writing,
Or writing that does not adhere to the anecdotal,
I loosely refer to a narrative of a different order.
We inherit from the American Transcendental
Tradition ~ and here are two greatest American poets,
Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman ~
The notion of a dialectic between empirical perception
And pure idea. This legacy continues to open new formal
And thematic terrain for contemporary writers.
My own poetry comes out of this desire
For narrative, although one of a different order.
My essential assumption is that a "site,"
The place of the poem, is constructed from a cognitive
Structure,
And, indeed, is engineered from this foundation,
Eg, perception, thought. But I am also
Keenly interested in the Magic and Charm
Of an actual site, such as The Museum ~ A site
Richly endowed with both imagination's will
And imagination's questions. An original place
Where the imagination's will requires that the museum's space
Extend to embrace all that is implicit within it.
And indeed, simply because this Museum de Ur
Is an imaginary place, all questions
Are contained within it.
My interest in alternative narratives

Has evolved from my work as a visual arts writer,
Specifically, my experience writing books on art history
