Study Suggests Connection Between Women Consuming Soft Drinks,
Developing Diabetes
08-24-2004 5:34 PM
By TARA BURGHART

CHICAGO -- Women who drink more than one sweetened soft drink a
day are slightly more likely to develop diabetes than women who drink
less than one a month, according to a new study.

Obesity is strongly linked to type 2 diabetes _ the most common form of
diabetes _ so the extra calories from soda account for at least some of
the increased risk, said the Harvard University researchers who did the
study.

Globally, type 2 diabetes, a condition that often leads to heart disease
and kidney failure, afflicts 154 million people and is blamed for about
3 millions deaths a year.

Hi Chief,,, I just want to thank you for your effort to post interesting,
up to date, and things that apply to our lives. I am here to tell you that
I hate diet drinks buttttttt my sugar readings will go up 100 points if I
have just a regular soft drink. At about the 220 reading sugar begins to be
forced past our kidneys and into our urine. This is hard on our system. At
above this amount that much sugar in our blood stream begins to effect our
nervous system and vascular system. Serious stuff to people that can not
exercise like normal people to work off the fat that over eating or eating
the wrong stuff causes. I am talking to myself more than to anyone else
about this. My increasing weight is very hard on my knees and it is
something that I can do something about.

Two months ago Charlie would have sworn he hated diet drinks too. And he
probably hadn't tasted one since 1970.

Now his blood sugar is starting to creep up. And after "accidentally"
drinking a few well iced diet drinks, he has found they aren't always all
that bad. The newer sweeteners taste more natural and have less aftertaste
than the old ones.

Unless you avoid soda's altogether, diet drinks are worth a try again.

Hhhhm, thanks. It was 10 years ago that I went to that class. That is
probably why they always say that there is a trace in my urine when tested.

Yes! The American Diabetes Association says that at 180 mg/dl, glucose will
spill into urine. Also, body, organ and central nervous system damage may begin
when glucose levels reach *any* level over the 'normal' 120. Acceptable/normal
limits were recently lowered to 100-110 because permanent damage IS occuring in
people with sustained glucose levels as low as 130. People need to be aware
that damage does occur even when glucose levels aren't extremely elevated.
Regular glucose testing is imperative because most people will not experience
'high sugar' symptoms at these levels, even though permanent damage is
occuring.

Ask in your local drug store but that is not really a good idea. A person
should find out when they have their yearly exam with their family doctor.
In fact you may be able to request your last results from a blood test and
get a good idea.

DeeTee,
Far as I know, you'd have to see a doc. But, you don't need a blood draw. A
simple finger stick will give some indication as to whether or not you need
further labs. Your PCP should have a glucose monitor in his/her office and
could easily do it for you whenever you have your next visit. My RD also has
one in his office.

Thanks, Harv and Patty. I actually do have the glucose screening about
every six months because my family is rife with diabetes. I was just
wondering if there was an easier way. Guess not.

Sure,,, You could spend $30-50 dollars to get the tester, test strips,
lancets,,, ect. and take it yourself the first thing in the morning before
you eat breakfast. It gives a pretty good idea on how you are doing.
With diabetes in your family, just make sure your 6 months tests are OK,,,,
to be sure. If you buy the tester and it shows you above 130 when
fasting,,,, the first thing you would do is see your doctor for a blood test
and your doctor will put you on a strict diet to see what your bodies
reaction to it is. Me,,,, it was not good enough and I had to take
medicine and still do.

White Rice Linked to Diabetes Risk

White rice, the staple food of several Asian countries, has been found to increase the chances of developing type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes mellitus is closely related with inappropriate dietary pattern and obesity.

Eat Breakfast, Cut Diabetes Risk

A recent study has revealed that people, who eat breakfast every day, are less likely to develop obesity, type 2 diabetes or even fat around the tummy. Presented at the annual meeting of American Diabetes Association, the study includes over 5,000 men and women, none of whom had type 2 diabetes when they entered the study.

Tips for Dining Out with Diabetes

If you are a diabetic, be particularly careful about the salt content of the food when you eat out. This is because high salt content is linked to disorders such as high blood pressure which can cause heart disease and stroke. More than two out of three deaths due to diabetes are attributed to heart disease and stroke. With some tips for dining out with diabetes, you can ensure that your salt intake is under control.

Gorging on peaches can lead to unstable blood glucose levels thus, diabetics need to keep an eye on their intake of this sumptuous summer treat. Moderate intake of peaches as a part of diabetes diet can aid in stabilising the elevated blood glucose levels of diabetics.
