I just saw a rheumatologist yesterday, who thinks I might have osteoarthritis.
She gave me some samples of a new prescription drug called mobic (meloxicam).
I scanned the subject lines currently available for this newsgroup on AOL, but
didn't see it mentioned. Anyone have any experience with it? Or read anything
about it?

TIA,

Alicia

I have a friend that said she was prescribed that for some pain in her knees
and fingers.
She said that it has helped...

I have been taking Mobic for a couple of years. It is the only Cox 2 I can
take and it works well for me. the only problems I had from it was at a
higher dose 15mg a day I developed mouth ulcers. I just took L-lysine for
that and it cleared them up. Good luck.

Mobic did nothing for me except cause some stomach problems. I have taken it
twice in the past several years. I don't think it is that new a medication.
I am back on Bextra after about two months off:(
Bextra doesn't have the outstanding pain relieving properties that Vioxx
gave me, but it doesn't give me edema or stomach problems.

well for me. At least my rheumy took me off very quickly.

Hi Alicia-Mobic isnt new. It has been around for quite a while.

It is one of the Cox-2 drugs available, that is supposed to be easier on your
tummy. But it comes with its own set of problems, primarily fluid retetion.
Doesnt happen in everyone. But it happens in a bunch of people, myself
included.

Mobic isn't a selective COX-2 inhibitor. It inhibits both COX-1 and COX-2.

Where in CA are you? I'm in the central valley.
Mobic is a NSAID like ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, etc... it is NOT a cox 2
inhibitor like Vioxx, Bextra, Celebrex.

For info, you can go to www.rxlist.com
Hope it helps you

ok, Chip, this is getting scary <g>...second time I'm agreeing with you in
less than a week!
Do you have hidden talents? Like casting spells? <g>

My RD won't use it with me because of the problems I have with most NSAIDS.
It showed me she was "keeping up" with my individual needs and I appreciated
it.

In response to my question whether anyone had any experience with or info on
mobic, Judy responded:

>Mobic did nothing for me except cause some stomach problems.

Tho I took it with food, I definitely felt queasy the first time I took it.
Not so bad yesterday. Guess I'll give it awhile longer to see how it & my
stomach get along.

Chip wrote:

I'm new to this, so, altho I've heard of COX inhibitors, I don't know anything
about them. Anyone with a simple explanation or a website I can look at?

Char responded:

>Hi Alicia-Mobic isnt new. It has been around for quite a while.

I guess I assumed it was new since I hadn't heard of it (that, & the large
stack of samples the doctor tossed at me). OTOH, celebrex & vioxx do a heck of
a lot of advertising, so I was familiar with them. Thanks for correcting me.

Great; just what I need. <g> :::crossing my fingers it doesn't affect me that
way & that the queasy tummy awhile after taking it goes away after I get used
to it:::

Ibuprofen I take (for my neck).

Thanks! Will go look it up.

Thanks to everyone (those I didn't respond directly to as well as those I
quoted) for your responses!

Chip, that's great about the med books! I had to buy new ones since mine
were outdated...it has been a very long time since I was active as a nurse.
And I have subscriptions to some of the medical journals and some online
resources as well.
What topics interest you? I am absorbed in genetics and molecular psychiatry
right now.

Hi Donnah,

I'm also interested in psychopharmacology and have several textbooks on that
subject. I have panic disorder, so I'm interested in keeping up on the
latest med treatments for that. I'm on Zoloft and clonazepam.

Here's a list of texts I have on psychopharmacology:

(1) The American Psychiatric Press Textbook of Psychopharmacology, 2nd
Edition (1998), Schatzberg and Nemeroff

(2) Essential Psychopharmacology, 2nd Edition (2000), Stephen M. Stahl,
published by Cambridge University Press

(3) Manual of Clinical Psychopharmacology, 4th Edition (2003), Schatzberg,
Cole, and DeBattista, published by American Psychiatric Publishing

(4) Synopsis of Psychiatry, 9th Edition (2003), Sadock and Sadock, published
by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins

Hi Chip,

..and I have major bouts with depression...and I am on the same drugs as you
<g>
the depression is rampant in my family hence the genetic aspect of my
research.
and the pharmacology is trying to keep up with what these drugs are doing to
the rest of
my body...right now I am way out of my league on the bone marrow issue, so I
will have to
go back to basics and study...and I am sure that my brain fog will make it a
challenge!
That's an impressive list, Chip. I am too damn lazy to get up and go check
mine :(
or maybe it's because it's one o'clock and sleep sounds really nice right
now!

Don't take the ibuprofen with the mobic. It's not good to take 2 NSAIDS at
the same time.

Here's an explanation of Cox 2 inhibitors and Cox 1
It was initially believed that Cox 2 inhibitors were "safer" on the tummy
than a plain ol NSAID

COX-2 inhibitors, the newest class of NSAIDS, work by blocking COX-2 enzyme
which is involved in the inflammation pathway. By sparing COX-1 enzyme,
gastrointestinal toxicity is reduced.
This has some more info

So, where in CA are you? I'm in the Central Valley. There is a lot of
autoimmune disease and fibro here.
I have nausea issues too. I call it involuntary bulemia. LOL. It's better
than it used to be but not fun either way. I take my Vioxx 50mgs at
night... so I sleep thru any of the nausea it could cause. Most of my meds
are taken at night. Not fun taking all these meds then puking.

Take care
Nicole

Harv, it's really no different than seeking answers when you have any of our
rheumatic diseases. Many keep up with advances made in treatments for RA,
etc.
This is just another part of who we are...

How are you doing? Has your pain subsided? And were you having trouble with
your hands or is my brain fog active?

If I remember rightly, there's a good reason for the confusion about Mobic.
isn't it the NSAID that they originally thought was COX-2 specific but that
further studies, after it had been out for a year or two, showed that it
isn't COX-2 specific? I remember that happened with one of the new NSAIDs
and I think it was Mobic.

LOLOL Not even close,,, LOLOLOL. Yes, I am being a good boy and taking
my two shots a week of Enbrel and my RA has gotten better but I have had
to stay on prednisone for costocondritis(sp) with my ribs. The shots I
took to help that lasted about 3 days and it slowly came back. I will
be doing just fine and then I have to cough or I will move just the
right way and then I want someone to pull the ice pick out. Butttt it
is better now than before I took those shots. I can remember Larry and
a couple of others that have broken ribs just coughing and I have made
an effort to control that because I may of cracked a rib or two and that
will take some time.
Please understand that I have to admit that I enjoyed reading what
you and Chip have had to say to each other and it shows that two smart
people can attack their problems by learning all they can about it. In
a way, I did the same thing when I was talking to Aim about tattoos and
the piercing stuff. I can understand my own two daughters better from
the discussion. I think this place works best when people learn from
each other and keep an open mind within reason.
