Hi:

Saw my P/T gal today. My knee has been giving me trouble (after doing pretty
well for awhile post-op).

Anyway, she says it is generally swollen (although not super bad) as there
is some fluid accumulation. It is not that much that a doctor would have to
drain it but it is still quite a bit.

She seems to think it will eventually get absorbed, but I have to take it a
bit easier.

Any other suggestions on what to do?

Does ice help at this point? Elevation? I do have a lot of errands and
work-related stuff to do!

Hi:

Mel

yes, mel. ice and elevation. busy days make this difficult, but if you can
get that knee above your heart level, elevation will work even better. a
certain degree of swelling is to be expected, but keep checking that knee
for redness and how hot it is to the touch. if those two things happen,
redness and hot to the touch, in addition to the swelling, call your surgeon
immediately and tell him/her about it. heal soon, mel.

When you are not running errands a bit of RICE should help with the
swelling.

Rest - You can figure this one out.
Ice - Keep it cool but don't over do it. A zip lock bag half full of
ice cubes wrapped in a dish towel is the standard around here. No
more than twenty minutes at a time on.
Compression - I wrap my foot overnight if it is swelling a lot. I'd
check with your doctor or physical therapist to see if wrapping the
knee a few hours at a time might help.
Elevation - Not as easy as it sounds. Got to get the swollen part
above your heart. In bed with a 'body pillow' under your leg would do
it. I've got a spot where I can watch TV with my foot on the back of
the sofa.

Swelling usually starts out as a symptom that we need to pay attention
to. But it can quickly become an uncomfortable habit.

There is nothing to speak of wrong with my foot that swells. Its
mostly the knee on that side. But once the foot starts swelling, it
gets like a stretched out sock. I have to give it a few days of the
rice treatment to get it used to being the right size.

keep a ic pack ready to go in the fridge so you can ice your knee whenever
you can relax and put up your leg for a few minutes. If ice doesn't seem to
be helping after a few applications, try heat instead.

Hopefully you will recover quickly from this too enthusiastic PT assistant!
