Because of the pain from OA and the resulting disrupted sleep (as well as
the pain and stiffness on arising), I am hoping that a new mattress will
help. I have been searching the internet for information and somewhere
someone said that one of the alt.arthritis groups had a discussion regarding
the memory foam (NASA foam, visco elastic foam, Temperpedic) mattress. Thus
far I have looked through over 10,000 messages and haven't come across
anything, so I decided to just post the question. I would really appreciate
hearing from any of you about these mattresses and whether you think they
are of help for the pain of OA and for a better night's sleep. Thank you
very much.

I didn't like either the Sleep number (Select Comfort) product but the
Tempur Pedic wasn't bad. Although I already had a really nice mattress I
found the contoured foam pillow helped relieve morning aches in the neck
and upper-back.

For a woman a body-pillow might help out as well. Men don't seem to like
curling up as much. Unless it's a woman who serves as the pillow. ;-)

Cheers, -Ali

Hi Kathryn. I bought a memory foam mattress topper from
www.technoscout.com. From what I've read, it's only the upper two
inches or so that actually has the memory foam on the expensive memory
foam mattresses. The rest of the mattress is whatever the rest of the
mattress is.

I love it. It seemed like a fairly inexpensive alternative to a product
like TempurPedic. Sometimes, I just lie in bed and feel so comfortable,
because I can actually feel that the memory foam is "hugging" a pressure
point. This is mostly when I'm lying on my abdomen and I can feel it on
my knees and ankles. I think it was $200 well spent.

Admittedly, I did not buy the thing because I was trying to eliminate
pain. I bought it because I was going to be spending a few months at my
sister's house, and would be sleeping on a futon for the duration. What
I found is that the memory foam on the futon is way more comfortable
than my bed. I have the foam on my bed now, but I really do need a new
mattress. But that's going to have to wait. I'm just glad I have the
memory foam to enable me to squeak another year or two out of this old
sagging bed.

Another thing I have to admit is that the memory foam really doesn't
help with my sleep problems. It just makes it more comfortable when I'm
awake. The pain, though, is not what is keeping me awake. I really
don't know what is doing that. I can fall asleep, practically go into a
coma as soon as my head hits the pillow. But, I always wake up about 3
hours later, and I just can't fall back to sleep very well. If I do
manage to fall back to sleep, I'll only wake up again. And, again.
And, again. Until it's morning and I have to get up. The mattress
doesn't help that at all, unfortunately.

I guess, if I was having a problem with OA pain, I'd try the memory
foam. Technoscout has a 30-day return policy. If you don't like the
mattress, or it's not doing the job, or if you just don't want it,
they'll take it back, no questions asked. Not a bad deal.

I also have a memory foam cervical pillow (not from Technoscout, though
they do sell them) which I got on the advice of my rheumatologist. It
has helped me trememdously, and that pillow is what actually convinced
me to try the mattress pad.

Hope this helped. If you have any more questions, or need more
specifics, please ask away. I do check in usually daily, if not more
frequently.

I found that an air mattress/bed with controls helped my OA and DDD much
more than the tempurpedic type mattress. With the air mattress I am able to
change the amount of air quickly and easily by pressing on the control.
This change of support is what allows me to sleep better and with less aches
and pains.

I went to the better back store and laid on one of those memory foam
visco elastic foam or whatever mattresses. It was wonderful. If I had
the money, I would get one in a moment. I did get a 2 inch topper, but
it does NOT feel the same. Some say the mattress only has 2 inches of
that foam, but the one I laid on at The Better Back Store was much
better than my home made one, with just the topper. It really
eliminated the painful pressure points. However, I did not sleep for
any time at all on it, and would insist on a money back guarantee if I
put that kind of money into a mattress. As it is, I have an adjustable
electric bed (hubby and I have twin beds that we have pushed together,
only mine is adjustable) that I got really cheap from a newspaper add,
so I just need to get the mattress. I will some day.
