At least I have a diagnosis. My index finger on my right hand was very
stiff, swollen, and painful at the big knuckle. I was supposed to go in a
week ago last Monday, but that was the flooded office situation. I saw the
physician's assistant this past Monday and she did some blood work. She
talked to the doctor and they decided that based on the blood work and the
symptoms, they would try me on colchicine. She called it in this afternoon
and it will be delivered in the morning. Please pray for me. It's so hard
to type or write or pick anything up if I don't get it the right angle. I'm
working on my December quota of things. Will pray for all the rest of you.

ah, that doesn't sound like fun at all - especially at Christmas when there's
so much to do. Sending prayers that the colchicine does the trick and does
it quickly!

What is the relieving treatment amount of Colchicine per the experience of
those who have had to take it? The drug book says "1 to 1.2 mg and then
followed by 0.5-1.2 mg every 1-2 hours until pain is relieved or nausea,
vomiting,or diarrhea occurs. The total dose needed to control pain and
inflammaion during an atttack varies from 4-8 mg." She has me on 0.6mg
twice a day. I started the medicine on Friday afternoon and do not notice
any improvement today (Sunday afternoon). I plan to call her tomorrow, but
thought I would see if anybody had something to report from experience.

Sorry you're not having any improvement, Navy. It was so long ago that
I had this that I don't even recall how it was treated. So painful,
though. Hope you can get some answers.

6:07PM I take colchicine daily. 0.6mg tab. i have had frequent bouts
with gout for 6 yrs. last year I had what I thought was a really bad
case of it and was told y my RT that it was Psudo. which i had not had
before. they are caused from different crystals that form in the
joints. no bouts of either since startd on these treatments on this
regular basis. Maybe your Rheum. should explain about this med more
thoroughy. Reg. Gout is from uric crystal, and Psuodo. is from calcium
crystals forming in the joints.. i have had it really bad and both are
not pleasant to have. Wwith the Psuodo. i was like a side show in the
Drs. office. everyone working in that whole unit was coming in to ook
at my right extremity. From the tip of the great toe to my hip looked
as though it was going to burst open any moment it was so edamatoused,
and painful. Reg Gout, if you can call it that, never did me that way.
any place got gets you is painful. I do hope you get good results. The
Colchicine helps me. you need to drink water, drink water, drink water,
to help keep you flushed out, and watch certain things eaten and drank..

Sorry, this sounds miserable.

Don't know if what you have is the same as what I've had several
times. Common term for what I've had is Sausage digit. Very
accurate description. My hand surgeon said that my blood levels for
whatever it is that causes gout are too high, though they are in the
high normal range and I've been on Allopurinol ever since. Only had
one finger blow up on me the the five of six years I've been on that.

Unfortunately my experience has been that it will last for about six
months no matter what I do. Prednisone is the only thing I can take
that helps to keeps the pain and swelling under control until it
clears up.

I know that Colchicine is the medicine for gout and psudogout (which kind is
determined by the type of crystals). What I was asking is if one has to
take a larger dose of Colchicine until the inflammation and pain go down and
then drop the dosage to a maintenance preventive. I am on the 0.6 mg dose
twice daily, which I don't think is going to give enough oomph to decrease
the inflammation and pain.

I hope I don't have to increase my Prednisone again. I'm trying to get off
of it. It's just the knuckle (third knuckle from the tip of the finger)
area that is really inflammed, but it is affecting the whole hand. Since it
is the index finger, it is shoving all the fingers towards the little
finger. I sure hope this won't last six months. The PA said that there was
only one blood test that was slightly high, so I don't think the gout or
psudogout (which is more likely, considering my age and sex, as gout is more
likely in men 50 and under, while psudogout is women over 60) is showing up
in the blood work to that level. I looked up Sausage Digit on the Internet
and that's not what I have.

I just hear from the PA and she says that they no longer do the increased
dosage because too many people got diarrhea from it. It will just take a
bit longer for the treatment to work. I should feel some improvement in a
week or two. It will take a month for complete recovery. So, we shall see
what happens.

ah, good thing you called to ease your mind about it all though it's a shame
you have to wait so long for improvement!

Thanks, Kelly. I appreciate the effort you were putting in for me. I do
believe there is some improvement. I seem to be able to bend it more, and
the main knuckle doesn't seem quite as swollen.

Little steps. I do know that everything I read keeps saying complete
recovery so that would be great if so! Bending is good.

Hang in there.

It'll bend down towards the palm, but we have a disagreement if I want it to
straighten out towards the thumb. Like you said, little steps. Maybe
tomorrow we will get the next step.

Finger improving on mobility. If I bring all the fingers up together, I can
then move the index one (the one with the gout). Evidently the colchicine
worked. I go to my rheumie on Friday and will get a progress report at that
time. I don't think she will take me off the colchicine yet. Thanks for
the prayers.
