Well ... you aren't going to believe this but today I walked across my family
room floor, I didn't fall, I didn't twist my foot. I didn't mis-step. And I
hear this crack and the immediate intense pain in my foot! And xrays later
confirmed that the 5th metatarsal bone is broken. Oh joy! Oh Pain! How much
more can this body take? The neuro is treatening to stop the enbrel cause the
new MRI showed more lesions then a year ago and the rheumy says then we will
have to do Prosorba. I can't get off the medrol without something flaring and
now I'm in a wheelchair with a temporary cast. (at least I can remove it!)

I AM NOT A HAPPY CAMPER!

Thanks for listening. Oh, and it's my right foot so now I can't drive :(

Yikes!!!! I am so sorry to hear about your broken foot. Now rest and

again.

So, what color is the boot? I have both blue and red ones in my closet,
but I saw a really nice green one a few weeks ago. They are even
available in school colors now.

Seriously, have they checked for osteoporosis? A stress fracture in the
foot would certainly make me suspicious. Is remicade an option before Prosorba?

Walt -

No Boot yet! They formed a stiff half cast behind my leg and foot and secured
it with an elastic bandage which I ripped off last nite in a fit of
claustophobia. Between the swelling from the break and my normal ankle
swelling it was getting way too tight. Now I have designed a really clever yet
ugly way to secure it with an ankle wrap/ice pack on the foot and the elastic
bandage tied loosly in a perfect boy scout knot on the shin! I can't wait to
hear what the ortho says when he sees this!

>Seriously, have they checked for osteoporosis? A stress fracture in the

It's not a stress fracture ... I don't think anyway. Isn't that just a little
line in the bone but not an all the way break? This is a full on "crack - snap
" break. The er doc said they would probably be putting on a real cast for at
least a few weeks but I'm going to have to talk with them about that. I am not
going to be able to handle that. I CANNOT stand even having my feet under the
covers at nite!

> Is remicade an option before
>Prosorba?

Sadly, no. When remicade was tested for MS is when the first problems with
anti-tnfa came up. They stopped the studies after 6 weeks due to an increase
of lesions on MRI at 6 weeks into the study. Thus came the concern for Enbrel
but my MRI was clean at 6 weeks, 6 months, and 1 year. But now at 2 years I
have new lesions and acccomanied loss of sensation and some function so this is
a big concern. Its not big but little stuff will add up to a big disability if
I can't stop it. So we are going to wait 6 months and repeat the MRI's and see
if there is any change. I had other factors during the past year that could
have increased MS activity that is settled down now so we will just have to
wait and see.

Thanks for your concern!

Hugs....

Stress fractures in a "normal" foot are usually just a partial crack,
but in an osteoporotic bone they can be a full break with dislocation
and/or shattering. It is considered a stress fracture simply because
there was no specific trauma that induced the fracture.

Regardless of whether the fracture was caused by osteoporosis, everyone
who has RA or any other inflammatory arthritis should be having their
bone density monitored. That goes for both men and women, and is
especially a concern for anyone taking steroids, at any dose.

Here's hoping for the best!

Ackkkkkk!!! {{{{{{{{{Diane}}}}}}}}}}}

I broke my 5th metatarsal a few years ago. It WAS a mis-step. I missed
a step running down the stairs in the middle of the night to answer the
phone. Then called 911 because I was sure I broke my leg. Ouch!!! I
had a completely dislocated fracture.

I was also put in a temporary cast at the hospital. The next day I saw
an orthopod, who put me in a real cast. I had that for 6 weeks. And,
yes it was claustrophobic. But, I found that the claustrophobia was only
at night. When I was up during the day, the cast actually feels good,
because it kept my foot secure, still, and therefore, less pain.

For the first week, I didn't drive because I didn't think I could. It
was my right foot also. But after that, I just drove with the cast on.
I suppose it's not really advisable, but I needed to get around. And, I
used my left foot for the brake.

I take 4mg Medrol every day, and was just dx'd with osteopenia. You
really should get a bone density test done. You just shouldn't be
breaking bones for no reason, and I read once (can't remember where) that
a fractured metatarsal is a red-flag indicator of osteoporosis. Have you
seen an orthopedist yet? If so, s/he should be recommending bone density
testing. BTW, my RD did not recommend the test to me. I had to ask him
about it. I said that I was concerned because I am on Medrol. Sho'
nuff!!! Osteopenia. Get tested.

Odds bodkins. You must have accidentally hit one
of those secret Ninga "pressure points".

I hate to say it, but there are some questions
that you're probably better off not asking...

Thank heavens for small blessings. I don't recall
ever having been in a real plaster cast myself, but
it sounds itchier than a whole dresser full of wool
turtleneck sweaters.
