Hey Donna.
Wanted to let you know and hope you can pass this along to the ASA kids.
My dad is in the hospital. He's been battling Pancreatic Cancer since
July. Until last week it was looking like he'd beaten all the odds, and
that he might just beat it entirely.
Then he got pneumonia last week.
Now there are spots on his lungs and liver in the latest CT scan from
Thursday. They didn't know whether it was metastases or just pockets of
infection from the pneumonia. Well, last night he crashed at home, and
Mom had to call 911.
He was too unstable to go to his usual hospital in Seattle, so they kept
him near home 30 min outside of Seattle. He's in the Critical Care Unit,
and will be transferred to his regular hospital today sometime.
At this point it's all very up in the air. They diagnosed him with
sepsis, and have been giving him hardcore IV antibiotics. He's feeling
well enough to tease the nurses, which is good.
The day he stops joking around is the day we REALLY need to worry.
In the meantime, he's still in very serious condition. I have had a cold
all week and can't even go see him, or be there to support Mom (as she
could transfer my germs) which makes it all the harder.
Could you please ask the ASA prayer chain to kick it into highest gear?
We could use a Christmas Miracle.
Thanks,
Amy (aka Aim)
ps. Needless to say, our Christmas cards are delayed.

Thank you all for your kind words and prayers.
He moved to his regular hospital (where he's been getting chemo) this
evening, and he's busy getting settled in. This way his oncologist can
keep a close eye on him... can you believe nobody in the smaller
hospital knew how to take blood from a power port? *sigh* I'm SO glad
he's in the big hospital now. Plus it's closer in to my place and my
brother's so Mom can crash with us as soon as I kick this cold.
Haven't heard from Mom in a couple of hours now. I'm hoping this is a
good sign. Last we talked, his blood pressure was up at 100/70 (from a
low of 50/30 or something last night.) He was really really touch and
go last night. It seems that today's quite a bit better, but he'll be
in the hospital for at least a few days. Ironically, his last chemo
was on Thursday because they thought he was doing so well. His doctor
was really ecstatic, thinking he might just be the only person to beat
inoperable Pancreatic Cancer. He may still. We just need to get him
through this crisis.
Please, absolutely, put his name on the prayer list at every church
you know. We'll take any prayers we can get.
Thank you all for being here.

Things were so hopeful last email. The pneumonia is so often the thing that
tips the scale and puts all things off. Hopefully they can get stabilized
and that Amy can get over her cold to visit. I will keep the prayers going.
(on a similiar topic does everyone here have their pneumonia vaccine? And
hopefully there flu vaccines?? Your families should have the flu vaccines
if only to protect you!)
Thanks for passing this on Donna. Prayers going out Amy!

I remembered that your dad's name was Harold, but Harold or Hal, the
prayers will still be for him. hopefully, he is over the worst of it.
It often seems as though it is not the primary condition to fear, but
the other opportunistic things like pneumonia that seem to strike. My
thoughts and prayers are with your family as you go through this.
Life is so complicated sometimes.

It's a liver abcess causing the trouble. They'll keep him in the
hospital til probably Wednesday. But he's doing MUCH better, and this
is something they can treat. He's at Virginia Mason now, so getting
good care from a team who knows what they're doing -- including his
oncologist.
I just spoke to him on the phone, and he sounds fairly chipper. They
were about to move him out of ICU and into the Oncology ward, which is
great news. He asked me to smuggle in a cookie for him as soon as I'm
well enough to visit. :)
So, the abscess - they're going to put yet another port in his body,
this one with a vacuum seal on it so that it is constantly draining
the abscess in an attempt to collapse it. IV antibiotics are hitting
it hard from another angle. He may beat the cancer yet. We're taking
it day by day at this point, and today's a good day.
Thank you all for the prayers. Please keep them coming, as an abscess
is nothing to sneeze at, and he's still a very sick man. But he's not
in imminent danger of death.
Love and Merry Christmas to you all,
Amy

They aspirated the abscess on Dad's liver this afternoon. It was full
of 450cc's of pus. He's very very sick.
They've got him still in the hospital, on enough antibiotics to kill a
horse, and he's currently sleeping off the anesthesia, but in a lot of
pain.
We're just taking it day by day.
Keep the prayers coming.
Thanks,
Amy

He will need 4-6 weeks of antibiotic infusions, and then they'll re-
evaluate how he's doing and whether/when to do more chemo. They found
the source of the infection two days ago. It was the stent they'd put
into his bile duct when he was first diagnosed. They were able to
remove the stent and clean everything out. Combined with the
antibiotics, he's a lot better, though still a pretty sick guy.
I'm SO GLAD he's on the mend. For awhile there it really looked like
we might only have days to weeks left with him.
Thank you all for all your prayers. The bigger issue, the cancer, is
still there. But at least he's not in imminent danger of death now.
Love and all my best to you all,
Amy

False alarm. He can't get out til he can pee without a Foley.
He's still not feeling fantastic, but he's slowly getting better from
the sepsis and abscess. It'll be 4-6 weeks of IV antibiotics, and then
they'll talk about whether and when to continue chemo.
Thanks again for all the prayers.
