I've been pretty turned off by some of the quackery that Dr Weil writes
about. In this case he doesn't mention that subsequent studies re
homocysteine and heart issues have found an *increase* in risk when
taking vitamins B6, folic acid and so on. He also lists 50mg as the
dose he recommends, nevermind that the usual "safe upper limit dose" of
B6 is 25mg from all sources. Even at that dose, in my case, it dropped
my blood pressure to the point where I almost passed out. Not everyone
has that kind of reaction, of course, but if you choose to take ANY
supplement, pass it by your doctor FIRST. And, if you do take ANY
supplement, please keep your doctor informed. S/he may not have any
problems with what you are taking, but there are some known
interferences with various supplements and medications that you may be
prescribed. Lastly, related to dosing, beware that virtually all of the
vitamins and other common OTC supplements have a J curve response, which
means that low doses AND high doses can be equally problematic,
increasing risks. There is sort of a Goldilocks level in between that
is just right and who knows what that level really is, so you are
usually far better off getting them from FOOD rather than pills. My
opinion and $.02.

When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual
who perceives a solution and is willing to take command.
Very often, that individual is crazy.
