Do you think the above quote is accurate?

it would help some people and is generally a good rule to live by,
unfortunately their are some people who would believe to highly of themself
and that causes a flaw in their character
the highest I could think of myself might be, I'm OK, and that would be good
enough

Yes, I do think it's accurate. People tend to base a person a lot on their
self esteem and self value. Unfortunately, the person with very low self
esteem and who tends to be needy seems to get stepped on a lot while people
who have high self esteem and are assertive and sure of themselves get the
opposite reaction from others.

Good point, Jim. And alot of people with anxiety disorders tend to think too
little of themselves.

It is true for first impressions but people will ultimately
make a decision about your competence based on
your actions and not your words.

Can't one have a high estimate of themselves, and say and do nothing in
order to influence the opinion of others?

I think we are confusing thinking highly of oneself with having an
overinflated ego. I know this because I am perfect. ;-)

Or, if one feels good about himself and is content with himself, does he
have *any* estimate of himself? Perhaps he just *lives and exists* with no
opinion.

Does estimating oneself always involve comparisons to others? The "not as
good, same, or better than others" game? The rating game?

I don't think you can judge someone who says and does nothing. What would
you base your opinion on?

"If you compare yourself with others, you may become bitter or vain, for
always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself."

Elise, my point was that maybe a person could have a high estimate of
himself, but not have a *need to prove* this to others. IOW the opinion of
others doesn't matter to a person with a high estimate of himself.

I think definitely, Chip, the type of self-esteem you have, if you think
badly about yourself at least, it comes across to others. I've seen that
from time to time in my life. If you have "good self-esteem" (not
arrogance) it comes across too. Now that I am thinking more about the
quote, I agree even more than I did when I first read it.

thanks,

bob
