I have been having tooth pain for quite a while now. Those of you who know
me also know that I have a severe phobia but muddled through and had all my
dental problems taken care of two years ago. Well lately 2 teeth have been
hurting me and causing me to panic. These 2 teeth are used to keep a partial
plate in place and are very important to keep up with. The pain was getting
so bad that I couldn't wear the partial so I finally went to a local Dentist
today. Usually I fill myself up with Xanax and Imodium and have someone
drive me, well this time there was no one to go with me ....... my hubby is
laid up with back pain and facing surgery soon, my daughter has 2 jobs,
school and an internship and my best friend just became a grandma today
..... so I was on my own but still took the Xanax and Imodium. hubby offered
to come with me and stay lying down in the car (he can't sit) but I would
just worry about him the whole time. So I just got up and went. I'm sure
that the fact that I've been very busy with doctor appointments lately has
actually helped because I had less time to think about it. This time I did
not get the Diarrhea (a first) and was much more calm (still anxious). I had
the teeth x rayed and cleaned and there is nothing wrong with them. The
Dentist believes it is a nerve problem and referred me to a Neurologist. The
Dentist and Assistant were very understanding and the best part was that I
was never alone from the minute I walked through their door and it all went
very quickly. Afterward I felt like a million dollars ...... with tooth pain
:)

If someone listens, or stretches out a hand, or whispers a kind word of
encouragement, or attempts to understand a lonely person,
extraordinary things begin to happen.

It makes a great difference when people around you are supportive. Glad you
got it over with. I hate going to the dentist.

Yes, bad experiences as a child can cause phobias that can last a lifetime,
unless you are lucky enough to somehow get rid of them. I don't like
dentists either, but at least you managed to do it - if we could only
maintain it till the next time and the next time... :).
Mary
I'm not afraid of dentists but I find that too many of them are just out to
grab as much money as they can even by giving false information to the
patient. I've experienced that personally and told the guy that I thought
that he was just out to rip me off when a simple procedure would be
sufficient. I left and had the simple procedure done and it is still
holding up after 20 years.

There appears to be a distinct lack of control over dentistry. That is one
reason why I just don't trust them.
