Not very cold here in Toronto. Around 32F but sunny and light windows today.
Was more windy yesterday, but so far, not much snow, but it can still
happen. A lot of snow in the US in various locations, but in B.C. at
Whistlers mountain where the Winter Olympics are starting next week I think,
there isn't enough snow and they've had to truck some in. Usually they have
plenty snow there. Its a famous ski resort for many celebrities and people
who can afford it. Many Olympic activities are in Vancouver, which has a
moderate climate with not usually much snow, but Whistler is 2 hours north
of Vancouver and in a snow area, but something happened this year and not a
lot of snow when they really need it. I wouldn't mind Florida because there
are nice beaches and pools and I like it there. My daughter and I used to go
in November in the off season when prices were lower
and always had a great holiday.

I think I have "Windows" on the brain from my recent change to Windows
Vista. I meant "light winds" which you probably all figured out :)

Our overnight lows have been anywhere between -10 deg C. to -16 deg. C.
which in my books isn't very cold. It has been a very strange winter. The
temperatures have been a tad below normal but the snowfall has been next to
non-existent. There is something headed in our direction for Tuesday night,
Wednesday and part of Thursday but the estimations of accumulation of snow
varies a great deal....I guess we will get what we get and that is about it.

Cyprus/Hollyburn mountains are very unpredictable when it comes to snowfall.
They were a terrible choice for Olympic events and were probably chosen
because of their closeness to Vancouver. I was born and raised out there and
that location hardly ever had snow for any length of time. Grouse mountain
and Seymour mountains would have been far better choices as they are higher
and get a lot more snow.

Vancouver though I've never been out west.
I forgot you used to live out there. I have cousins in Victoria and
Vancouver B.C. Some relatives who used to live here, went there to visit and
never came back. Not all of them lived in Toronto before that. A couple
lived in Whitby Ontario - just east of Toronto. Its a nice town. But we
don't have the beautiful scenery that Vancouver and Victoria have. I think
I would have been happier to live in Vancouver or Victoria. The climate is
much more moderate than Toronto which is way too hot for me in the summer.
They always say they get more rain than here, but sometimes we get a lot
too. Rain doesn't bother me.
I always thought Whistler Mountain got a lot of snow. When you see it on
live cameras on TV weather, there is always snow and people skiing and looks
beautiful. On my calendar this month, there is a picture of Whistler Village
with the mountain in the background and lots of snow and d a well known
haunt of the rich and famous. Are Cyprus/Hollyburn mountains another name
for Whistler? Vancouver will be OK for skating events as they are indoors,
but skiing and snowboarding need to be outside. If its so unpredictable, why
would Olympic committee choose it? Someplace in Colorado would be better
where they can count on getting snow all winter. My doctor and husband are
going to the Olympics next week. Her son lives in Port Coquitlam.I hope the
Olympics go OK. It cost a ton of money..

You would have to love the rain in order to like it there for a long period
of time. Victoria gets far less rain than Vancouver but it is often overcast
and windy seeing that it is right on the Straight of Wanda Fuca.

Whistler is a separate area entirely. The last time that I took a look at
the snow conditions there they had 200+ centimeters of base snow on the ski
runs. Earlier this year they had over 18 feet of snow.....much different
climate than Vancouver.

Port Coquitlam was within cycling distance of where I used to live when I
was a kid and my friends and I would go swimming at the beach there or go a
little further around the Burrard Inlet to go fishing.
The cost of attending the Olympics is out of reach for a lot of people of
average means and that is without considering the cost of accommodations
etc.

I have rooted for the Saints since birth. It was incredible to see
them win their first Super Bowl. What an incredible story!

I don't mind the rain. I like it in fact as long as its not every day for
weeks. I was born and grew up on the east coast of Scotland and its quite
rainy there at times though Glasgow on the west coast gets a lot more rain
than where I lived. Must be something about west coasts. My one cousin lives
in Victoria and used to live in Alberta, but thety love Victoria. My
daughter has been to Vancouver a few times and likes it there and has stayed
for several weeks and says it is nice there and rains sometimes, but in
Toronto it rains a lot too. I can't say it rains as much as Vancouver, but
in August we get those severe thunder and lightning rain storms due to the
high humidity. October is very rainy here too. My son lives in Ottawa and
when he got married a while back, it was in October and rained the whole
day. Not a good day for a wedding.

Its around 45F or 50F when they gave the weather there lasdt night. So where
is the snow there now? the Olympics start this Friday.

Yes, its expensive. But my doctor and husband probably have enough money and
with their son living there, they won't need to worry about accommodations.

That is the problem. The rain can go on for weeks. The year I moved out of
there, there was less than 50 hours of clear sunlight in the 3 months before
I left.....not for me even though I was born and raised there. It was

rainfall varies greatly over the area of the city. It depends a lot on where
you are located.

Whistler should be ok. The town is in a valley while the ski runs are on the
mountains. It can be raining like hell in the town and snowing like a
blizzard on the summit.

Terry Fox did come from that area and I found out yesterday that he attended

Yesterdays high was 50F (which is normal for here) but todays forecast
says a high of 29F. Just had a passing snowstorm but the wind is the
worst! A steady wind of 20mph and gusts much higher.

I'm such a big sports fan that I had forgotten it was on. I went out to
the store and heard people talking about the game so I turned it on when
I got home. Saw about 2 or 3 plays then got sidetracked and heard the
crowd when it was over.

I have two cousins in Vancouver, and both say it rains quite a lot b ut
there are many days its sunny and beautiful weather. Another cousin lives in
Powel River BC and says it rains. I've known many people who lived in
Vancouver, and none of them say it rains for weeks at a time. Maybe depends
on where you live there? maybe more right by the ocean? They show lots of
videos of Vancouver on the Weather network and it is often not raining.
Another cousin lives near Kelowna and says its hot there, but its more
inland. Maybe you lived in a very rainy area :)

There was a live video of Victoria on the Weather network today and it is
lovely and green, no sign of rain or snow and golfers are out on the courses
with short sleeves and daffodils and other flowers are out. They get spring
flowers much earlier than Toronto or even Windsor, Ont. which is usually a
lot warmer than Toronto. I have a cousin lives in Windsor and used to live
in Toronto and he says Windsor is much hotter and jokes with me that if I
think its hot in Toronto, I should live in Windsor.

It showed several videos on TV here in the last couple of weeks of where the
Olympics are going to be on Whistler mountain and even now, they still have
concerns about the weather not being cold enough and not enough slow for the
ski slopes where the Olympics are being held. Why were they trucking in all
the snow for past few weeks if there's enough snow for the Olympic runs?
The Olympic committee have given a few press conferences to let the public
know that there will be enough snow.

Powel River is on the east coast of Vancouver Island and as such is
relatively protected but they will be affected by the mountains on the
mainland acting as a dam for the clouds and that will cause rain as the air
mass is forced up over the mountains. The same is true in Vancouver. In the
southern part of Vancouver, away from the mountains, the rainfall is much
less than it is in the northern part of the city.
If the pictures from the Weather Network are taken from the weather station
which is located out by the airport then there will be much less
precipitation. That is the lowest part of the city and quite far from the
mountains. Where I lived we were at the base of Burnaby mountain (big hill
really) near the highest point of North Burnaby. It would be raining there
when it wasn't raining elsewhere in the city.
Kelowna is very different from locations on the coast. The Okanagan valley
is semi desert at an altitude of 344 meters. Yes, there are cacti and rattle
snakes there (more than once I had cactus spines pulled from my backside).
It can be very hot in the summer and it can be very cold in the winter with
winds from the Yukon.

If rain is your thing, go to Prince Rupert. They get enough rain that the
forest in the area is classified as a "rain forest."
Snow depth on Whistler/Blackcomb as of this morning is 266 cm or about 8.7
feet. I don't think that they have any worries about snow in that area for
the foreseeable future. Cyprus mountain on the other hand could be a
washout.

The skiing and snowboard events are at two distinctly different locations
and the news casts are far from clear on this. It is the Cyprus mountain
area near Vancouver that is in trouble.
The Whistler local was shown on the news this morning and it is beautifully
covered in snow with the ski runs marked out. They showed a Lynx on one of
the hills...nice sight!

I shouldn't have mentioned it :) Lots of people still like Win XP. On my new
computer I have Vista 64 bit, which is better than what I thought according
to many people who didn't like it. Its not that different from Win XP except
for more settings you don't need and pop-ups asking you to do this or that.
I've disabled most of them but takes time to find them. Also on Vista it has
Windows Mail/news reader which is quite similar to Outlook express which
I've used since it came out in Win 95 and I like it fine. But on Windows 7
as I understand it, they changed the mail reader to Outlook. On my old
computer, I still have Win 98 which I still think was the best OS and much
more simple. I started out in 1990 with DOS only. Also on my old computer I
have Win XP as a dual boot to Win 98. One thing I don't like about Vista 64
bit is it has no drivers for my Canon scanner but they have drivers for
Vista 32 bit, and Canon say they won't be making the driver for Vista 64
bit. I have no intention of buying a new scanner. the one I have works
perfectly fine. I can use the scanner on my old computer when I have to.

Yes about Win98. I held onto that until I could buy XP for $99.99 on
ebay. I'm looking for another cheap copy of XP with authencentation
code to put on an "E Machine" that was given to me. It was my neices
and it has Vista on it but they lost the code for Vista. I'm hoping to
do that and sell it for maybe $175 to $200? It's only 2 years old and
has a flat screen with it. Or maybe someone will buy it as is and put
whatever operating system they want on it.

You could maybe get an OE version for Win XP for $99.99 on Ebay but I think
you can only use it on one computer, though I'm not sure how that works. I
got Vista 64 bit with my new computer which I bought 2.5 months ago. I also
got Windows 7 upgrade free from MS because new computers in stores here were
being installed with Windows 7 when I bought mine, so if you bought a new
computer between Oct.20 and Dec. 31/09. The same offer was given here as in
the U.S. Maybe other countries too. I don't know. But so far, I haven't
installed Windows 7.

Yes, they might, and it its got an LCD you should be able to sell it for at
least the price you mention, especially if its got a fast CPU and video

My cousin who lived in Powell River now lives in Vancouver with her daughter
I think. She loved Powell River and when she visited Toronto, I remember she
told us she had too take either one or two ferries from mainland to get to
Powell River. She also likes Vancouver. One of my daughters went to
Vancouver for a vacation about 15 years ago and stayed for a month, and her
boyfriend at the time lived in Vancouver (he was originally from Toronto)
and he had a motorbike and took her around Vancouver on the bike. I asked
her the other day was it raining all the time and she said it was good
weather and some rain but not a lot and didn't prevent them from going on
the motorbike. She thought it was a great place and went all around the area
and went to a beach there, not the nude beach though :). There is a nude
beach (or used to be) on one of the small Toronto islands just off Lake
Ontario - you get a short ferry ride from downtown waterfront. You wouldn't
find me there :>) They have another island nearby where they have kids rides
and people go for the day to have a picnic. Its very nice there and hard to
believe you are only a few minutes away from a large bustling city. I
haven't been there for many years. Another island has an airport thats been
there for years, usually just for small planes, but they've expanded it and
now have flights to Ottawa, Montreal and other places. There is an ongoing
fight about expansion.

Unless you are fairly familiar with that area, when you live in the east
like me, you don't realize how far apart these places are. I've never heard
of Cypress Mountain ,but its been mentioned in the last couple of days when
watching Olympic games.

I agree, the news is not clear about these various locations. I think its
spelled Cyrpress mountain or at least thats how they spelled it on TV today
when skiing or maybe it was snowboarding they were doing there. I think it
said some rain and fog there today or yesterday. Wasn't it there yesterday
when the Canadian girl won a silver medal for skiiing? She did a good job,
but the American girl got the gold (Hannah somebody).

As you said, probably Whistler has better snow and ski runs. Some other
locations have had problems with rain and fog. I don't think they usually
have those problems other years.

Vancouver. Her flowers are starting to come up!!.
I had to laugh when one of the snowboarders was interviewed. He was from
Vancouver and was asked about Cyprus mountain and he laughed and said that
he usually trained on Grouse Mountain or Seymour Mountain (north shore of
Burard Inlet) because there was always more and better snow!

They said on the weather channel today that Cypress mountain has problems
with heavy rain today and events had to be cancelled. They sure are having
problems with one thing and another. Its so sad for the young guy from
Georgia who died the first day of the games on the luge slide. That event
always looked very dangerous to me and makes me wonder why its even allowed.
They've now changed the height of the barrier to make it higher where the
young guy died and made the run shorter to try to prevent any other
accidents. Won't help the poor guy who died. I hope they learn something
from this tragedy.
The only thing good so far is the Montreal skier who won the gold medal, but
now Australia is complaining their skier should have won gold.

There is huge controversy over that luge/bobsleigh run. Some of the athletes
are upset that the track has been slowed down and others are very happy
about it. There is one thing very certain. If you make mistakes on that
course, you will pay for it one way or another. It certainly isn't for the
inexperienced. A statement was released yesterday that future tracks would
not be allowed to be as fast as this one as the officials didn't want speeds
to approach 100 mph. Someone said that speeds have been recorded as high as
185 kmh or approx 111 mph. The discipline involved was not revealed.
Having seen that fatal accident on the news, I really don't know if the new
wall extension would have helped the luger or not. He was really flying (145
km per hr or approx 87 mph) when he completely missed the turn's exit . He
just flew through the air like a missile. It would have been a miracle to
have survived even with the track improvements.
Luge and bobsleigh have been notorious for danger since they started as
sports. Safety has vastly improved since it began but there is no way that
it is going to be made "safe." It is the winter Olympics version of auto
racing.
As for the Australians claiming that their (our dual citizenship person)
should have won the gold medal, it is bunk. He didn't properly complete the
trick that he did in the middle of the race. According to the commentators,
he had to grab his skis when he was inverted and he wasn't even close to
doing so. That is a penalty almost equal to missing the trick completely. In
addition, he isn't even liked down there in Australia.

around the courses. I saw some footage where a skier went airborne and then
went right through the safety fence netting. It was a wonder he or a
spectator or two weren't killed.
I might watch the curling but for the rest of it, I'm finished watching.

I think its even worse than auto racing. I would like to see it eliminated

All these events can be dangerous because of the speed but I think the luge
is the most dangerous. I dont know how they can even see on the luge run
since they lie on their back. I dont even like to watch it.

slushy on Cypress mountain this morning or yesterday, forget when they said.
They had to postpone women's cross snow boarding, but I saw the event later
on. Two Canadian women were eliminated in the qualifying round though last I
heard the Olympic committee were deciding whether to have a second
qualifying round as originally planned, but the event was delayed for a
while and they got behind on events. I also so on the weather report that
Whistler and Cypress mountains have never had mild weather like this for the
past 115 years. Whistler is ok at the top of the mountain but the bottom has
some problems. Its really unfortunate the weather has not been favourable
for the Olympic games. There is no way anyone could predict the bad weather.
Normally, the weather is not a problem there at this time of year.

There are a lot of Quebec contestants at the Olympics, same with summer
Olympics, but even more at winter Olympics. They get a lot of snow in most
of Quebec so have lots of practice.

began on Dec. 21 and we have only had a couple of inches of snow here and
there and none piled up on the side of the road like most winters, and none
on the roads for long either (so far at least I should say). Its a very
strange winter with no snow here but lots in the U.S. norther states. They
look like the frozen north thisyear. I dont mind no snow. Its easier to get
around when you have to drive :) First day of spring on March 20 is just a
little more than a month away.

The Europeans didn't want to spend the money to come over for practice. The
run has been open for quite a while.

It isn't much of a spectator event either as most of the run isn't visible
to the spectators. I think that it should be scrapped.

The fellow with dual Canadian/Australian citizenship finished second to the
Canadian in the moguls.

All the runs were completed for the women's cross snow boarding. One
Canadian, Maelle Richer qualified third after the second qualifying run. She
eventually won the whole thing. Her nearest competitors were not even close
as she was so far ahead. So, she won the first women's gold medal of the
games for Canada.

The skating is nice to watch but I don't like to call sports whose outcome
is determined by a panel of judging. If an event doesn't have a score that
everyone understands or a time that everyone understands, I don't tend to
watch them as I have no trust in any "judging system" in sport.....Olympics
or not.

We haven't had much snow either. It has been a bit colder than normal but
snow-wise it has to this point been nothing at all to complain about.
