Subject: heeeeelp
Hi all, i am in need of some suggestions. I am 42 yo male, above knee amp
(left), i'm trying to find ways to be active and lose weight. Currently i
walk about 1.5k per day (weather permitting) swim in heated small
hydrotherapy pool for about 20 mins twice a week, lift weights every second
day for 1/2 hr or so. The more i do the more it hurts and i feel like i'm
going backwards. I think i need other things to do but not sure what.  Any
suggestions appreciated.

Thanks

Gary

Hi Gary

I think the best thing you can do is to uncomplicate the subject.  I
just got real big on this stuff.  I'm 48 and a bi-lateral AK.  Lost my
legs when I was 21 in a car accident.  Being young and athletic,
wheelchair athletics was came pretty natural to me.  Stayed very
active up through my mid thirties.  All that ground to a halt by late
thirties.  Now at 48, arthritis is an issue and this past winter here
in the Mid-Atlantic was the worst in years and I stayed sick pretty
much the whole winter.  That was really the first time I had been sick
since my accident and I never want to do that again.  Bottom line is
that I'm getting back into shape.  I'm 162 now, which would roughly
translate to 205ish if I were still 6' tall.  My best weight was right
around 140 or about 180 for being 6' tall.

With all that being said, there is only ONE and ONE WAY only to lose
weight and that is to burn more calories than you consume.  Period.
Watch or read ANYTHING from Andrew Weil.  He REALLY knows what he is
saying and debunks a lot of fad diets out there.  It sounds like you
act the activity part of the equation taken care of.  It HAS to be
what you are eating then.  Soft drinks, fast or junk food, snacks are
pretty much the kiss of death.  My main philosophy I borrowed my my
Grandmother and that is, anything in moderation, even moderation!  I
think the thing to make lasting change is to make lifestyle changes
that are permanent.  Hey a coke once in a while is one of life's
simple pleasures.  Maybe not 5 a day!!

What does your typical diet look like because again, it looks like you
are plenty active.

Mike

Thanks for replying Mike, i thought this group might be dead like many
others.
Well, i have trouble eating the right stuff but i stuck to minimum junk and
replaced snacks etc with fruit and good stuff.
for years i have omitted milk (we have skim milk) no sugar/salt/butter or
margarine. i used to drink diet coke but now water (about 2.5 ltr a day).
the frustrating thing is i can go for a few weeks on track then have ONE DAY
where i might eat stuff i know i shouldnt and see REVERSE RESULTS the next
day, maybe small maybe big results depending on what i eat. this didnt
happen a couple years ago, seems like all i have to do now is LOOK at fatty
food etc and i put weight back on...OMG!!!

Anyway, i suppose i just have to balance meals and stick to it but it's
getting very hard to stick to.

I'll have a lookup on Andrew Weil, thanks for the suggestions.

Gary
