This is my explanation:
"It is known that sex hormone binding globulin levels are low in type 2
diabetes in both sexes (N Engl J Med. 2009 Sep 17;361(12):1152-63). It is
also known that testosterone is an 'endogenous neuroprotective factor' in
Alzheimer's disease (Front Neuroendocrinol. 2009 Jul;30(2):239-5).
The findings of Sanz, et al., may be explained by increased available, free
testosterone."

Well, it is an interesting take, but not at all what the researchers
suggested.

Many people with Alzheimer's have a constellation of complicated
health issues that can contribute to their cognitive decline. Few
people who have the Alzheimer's label applied are thoroughly assessed
and diagnosed - and even if they ARE lucky enough to have been through
a rigorous process upfront, as they deteriorate, they are not
rechecked for other factors. My guess would be many actually have
mixed dementias, where infarcts or Parkinson's etc. are contributing
to their cognitive decline.
Anyone whose general health is being well managed seems to decline
slower, and again, it's because all the complicating factors that pile
on top of the AD are being looked after.

My Wife has had numerous "workplace injuries" over the past sixteen years.
One doctor said "Shoulder". It was treated.
Next time, different doctor, "shoulder" It was treated.
Next time, different doctor, "Neck, nothing wrong with the shoulder". It was
treated.
After being very dissatisfied with the progress, we found a doctor that had
a special interest in Muscular Skeletal Medicine.
He examined her with an open mind, took previous diagnosis only as a guide,
but investigated beyond them.
Result? (are you sitting down?) Neck, both shoulders, carpel tunnel in both
hands, epicondylitis in both arms and evidence of past problems long since
forgotten (and overlooked).
btw, My Wife has been a professional Carer for over 30 years.
Never accept yesterdays diagnosis as the cause of todays problem.
Never accept that there is only ONE cause.
Get a second opinion.
