Invitation from Sufi Platform Social Networking for Sufis
If we are to die and be annihilated, then why have we been created?
Why do we live here? Do we live for devouring?
Do we live for marrying and pleasure? Do we live for travelling
places? Do we live for hoarding things that one day we will leave and
go? Is there any meaning in them if we are finally to die and be
annihilated?

See the Brian Aldiss short story "How to Serve Man".

Corporate society looks after everything. All it asks of anyone, all it
has ever asked of anyone, is that they do not interfere with management
decisions. -From “Rollerball”

Maybe not the tale you were thinking of, Martin, but I came across this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Serve_Man

"The story involves helpful alien emissaries, the pig-like Kanamit (singular
Kanama), giving mankind all the necessary tools to survive and to end wars
and famine. As a further token of friendship they even freely transport
humans to their paradise-like planet.

The aliens accidentally leave behind a book. A United Nations official from
Russia named Grigori finds the book and via a Kanamit-English dictionary
manages to decipher the book's title, How To Serve Man, and first paragraph,
which he explains to the narrator. The paragraph reveals the Kanamit's
disquieting motives: How To Serve Man is a cookbook."

To die and be annihilated. Sort of redundant...

> Why do we live here?
As opposed to where? I used to be over there, but I came here. The
light is better here.

Do we live for devouring?
Or being devoured. Depends on the local wild life.

> Do we live for marrying and pleasure?
There was a lion tamer who was out late one night, and instead of going
home, locked himself in the cage and slept with the lions. About 3 AM,
his wife arrived, beating a metal pan on the bars, and screaming "Get
out of that cage. I'm going to teach you the meaning of the word "Fear".
Do we live for traveling places?
Wherever you go, there you are.

Is there any meaning in them if we don't die and get annihilated?

Many questions, one answer. Yes.

Hmmm, social networking for mystics seeking oneness? Doesn't this
seem a bit superfluous?

Besides a real Sufi would avoid any and all platforms like the plague.

When the Iman visited Nasrudin's home he saw a crampted dwelling and
remarked:
"You live in poor conditions now, it is true, but do not dispair. The
meek are rewarded in death and you will go to a place where you will
live in splendor such as you have never seen in this world.

"That is all very well," replied Nasrudin, " But what do I need with a
luxiourious grave?.

obo,

I think platforms are okay as long as they don't have trapdoors. And
come to think of it, they need to have an open ceiling. Nothing to
throw a rope over.

Anyway, there is nothing wrong with intermingling. You get to know
about virtual virtue before you have to recognize it IRL. Very useful.

Howdy Dan, I was thinking of the idea of a platform being not so much
something of support, but more of an agenda, as used in, say, the
term, a political platform.

Sufis (imo) don't need agendas, they invent their way moment to
moment.

Eric, spot on!!! My favorite "definition" of Sufism from Shah is, "It
is a body of knowledge."

Obo,

Jesus invented his way, moment to moment. It was someone else's agenda
that caused the problems.

I live in the US where political platforms are a dime a dozen, and
candidates never read them anyway. They certainly don't follow them.
W. ran for president as a "Compassionate Conservative". I see no
evidence of either.

Seen from outside the US it is really quite baffling how such a dud
could be elected, and how an able person like Rice could be in his tent.

If I were to be honest, it makes no more sense from inside the US. Rice
and W. have a long history, which is the only explanation.

Seems to be working over at the Ning networking site "Hidden Recess" that
James Souttar has just set up.

Cheers,

Will try to find the time to check out his new site. I liked Chichana
when we had that going a few years back. The worth of the net is
dependent on each individual who shows up and their particpation, eh?

Cheers, Obo.

One of the things James is keen on is to help pass the baton on to the
upcoming generation (without folk claiming to know all the answers, but
making their life experience available).
