I'm thinking about purchasing Cubase VST/24 and have some questions for
those of
you who own it.

The website says that Cubase has 32 digital audio tracks but I've only
seen 8 on
my Cubase demo.

If it allows for 32 digital audio tracks, then what would separate
Cubase from a
full-functioning Paris or Pro Tools System?

Secondly, I'm planning on using my QS8 to record with Cubase. I'm going
to use the digital output of the QS8. Am I correct that I would need a
soundcard that ha
s an ADAT interface? What would be a great suggested card?

Since I'll be using the ADAT interface primarily, is it really that
important wh
ether or not the soundcard has 24 bit a/d conversion?

Are the actual lightpipe cables expensive?

Thanks,
Greg

VST/24 has 96(!) channels....
ProTools is a completely different beast. It allows you to put effects on
all inputs (when recording, or for mixing all your outboard synths and FX
inside ProTools) In Cubase you have to record your synths as audio tracks if
you want to mix everything inside VST. Or use an external mixer.

Doesn't sound like a big deal. I don't mind waiting until after I've
recorded my instruments before adding effects.

But I've since learned that systems like Pro Tools and Paris aren't
host based systems like Cubase and Cakewalk, meaning that Pro Tools and
Paris don't rely on the computer's CPU but rely instead on expensive
soundcards.

Am I correct that Cakewalk has 196 channels of audio? How much is too
much. Cubase only has 96. That even sounds like overkill to me........

If I were to use the Yamaha DSP would I save any money with such a
system, combined with Cubase as opposed to getting a Paris Bundle 1
(for $ 2144 from Full Compass).

How much does the DSP go for? What would be the pros and cons of both
systems?

It is a big deal actually... but also a big difference in price!
Everything in ProTools-land costs $$$$, and lots of it. Overpriced, some
say. They're probably right.
If you're just starting out, you'd be much better off with Cubase and a
decent sound card.

i agree...even the nicer plugins (TC electronic, say) for cubase are cheaper
than the cheap protools ones...and from what i understand with
protools...more tracks means more hardware :(
tho...i personally have yet to break the 45+ track mark...
granted you get what you pay for...and digidesign can't rape the
willing...but for those of us mere mortals on a budget...cubase is a pretty
sweet deal, so long as you follow the recommendations for hardware :) it's
the best purchase i've made in a LONG time!
i actually just snagged the 24 bit upgrade this weekend...anyone have any
experience with the TC Native reverb, good bad or indifferent??
