NEW TOS/DS9 "Logic of History" Mirror Spock [PG]
by Sisko2374

Summary: At the end of the Terran Empire, the Mirror Spock must confront the
consequences of his own actions.

Of late he found himself drawn here quite frequently. He told himself that the
quiet of the tomb lent itself well to contemplation. And he so dearly needed
quiet amidst the chaos of these days, to find a way out. But a part of
himself, the human part, knew that he was here seeking answers and solace. The
Vulcan in him denied this. It was illogical to seek answers or comfort from
the dead. Yet the human part of him came here to dialogue with the dead, even
if there could be no answer. It was necessary.

You understood humans and the galaxy so much better than I, he thought. My
logic was at fault. You pointed this out to me repeatedly. Yet I ignored your
warnings and fell into the trap of my own poorly conceived plans. It was
ironic. You, the "illogical" human, understood me and the universe far better
than I did. In your heart, you were a Vulcan. And I was far too human.

Now we must pay for my mistakes. Only you are blameless. You knew the
consequences of my actions. Too much, too soon. You pointed out that it was
always a chess game, that if I did not follow the rules, gave away my pieces,
destruction would follow. You reminded me that this was the logic of history.

But I was sure of my logic. That there was a new and better way. Because he had
pointed out my illogic before you. My participation in the illogic of waste;
of people, of resources, of time. I still think that there was a better way.
Your way. I should have listened. Proceeded more cautiously, prudently,
moderately. Not unilaterally. You were right. And I was so very wrong.

Perhaps it was because I never really trusted you, that I did not heed you.
Because of what you once had been. Yet you were no more opportunistic and
self-serving than the rest of us. Instead, I placed my trust in others. Those
who praised and fawned upon me for my actions, without regard for thought or
principle, their only goal to remain in power. I was a fool. And far too
human. They feared you. And that is why they put an end to you. I was too
blind. Too late, I could do nothing but avenge you.

Forgive me.

The human guard approached him softly. "It is time."

He opened his eyes. The sarcophagus was still before him. "The Enterprise is
ready?"

"Yes, Emperor, the Enterprise and Starfleet are ready to meet the invaders.
They await only your presence."

He rose from his knees. "You mean what little is left of Starfleet awaits my
presence."

The guard was silent.

He turned to leave, the guard ready to follow him. He hesitated. Turned back
toward the sarcophagus of the Empress, placing his hand upon the marble image
of the face of the dead, caressing it and whispering.

"Farewell, Marlena. Forgive me."
