III) Some Suggestions
=====================

A) General Suggestions
----------------------

Fist, please post only your work or work which you have obtained
permission to post.

Second, all stories that are posted here make their way into the
archive. If you do not what them in the archive, please note that
in the first 40 lines.

The group would like to never see another Make Money Fast post, so
please don't post them. (A Star Trek Parody of them is permitted
though)

The authors of this group LOVE feedback. It's the reason we post the
stories (other than the fact we thought it was a good story) So e-mail
them, post a reply if you are more out going. Some new authors have
e-mailed me wondering why they receive practically no response.

B) Responding to Works
----------------------

The authors on ASC live for feedback. It's part of the reason we post
(other that the fact that we thought we had a good story). We
encourage people to respond to the stories on ASC. However, there are
some things you should remember.

First off, ASC is community. Please help us promote that sense of
community by phrasing your replies in a respectful manner. Do not
attack the author personally. This can result in the most nasty flames.
Do not attack the type of story. Saying you hate it because you can never
see Picard and Crusher together is not helpful. Instead, tell us what
you liked, and what fell flat and why.

Some authors request that you give feed back privately, others publicly,
still others don't care how. Some just want compliments, some want mild
complaints, still others you can rip their story to shreds and they
won't mind. How do you tell which? Well generally they'll tell you.
If the don't, the default seems to be compliments, mild problems, and
on the group .

For More Information on Feedback see the mini FAQ entitled The Mannerly
Art of Critique.

IV) Posting Format
==================

A) Style
--------
Lines should be less than 75 characters, which will allow people
to read it easily on most newsreaders. It should be single spaced.
As upper case is considered shouting, don't writing in all upper case.
Reserve that for when you character is shouting.

For more information regarding stories, see the Advice for Authors FAQ.

B) Subject lines
----------------
The Subject Line should consist of a Post name, a short title, the
Part Number, rating, the series, type and codes

The Post name is a three letter field consisting of one of the
following:

NEW For new stories
REP For Reposts
REV For Revised versions of stories
COR For corrected versions of stories
DRA For Drafts

The Title should be no longer than 20 characters. This does not mean
one has to keep the title short, but a shortened version should be in
the subject line. The full title can be listed in story header (see
below).

The part number should be in the part number/last part format. If the
last part is not known or you are not posting all of the story in
the next week, a ? mark should fill the last part field. Roman
numerals are reserved for stories in series that can stand alone.

The next field is the rating. We enclose the rating in [] so that
parents can set a kill file for stories rated [R]. The ratings are
explained in the codes section.

Next comes the series. This series is a three letter field. See the
codes section for explanation.

The last field is the codes and types. This should be enclosed in () so
that it may be easily pulled out. The first item in the () should be if
it's a parody, x-over, or poem. Next should come the romance codes as
listed in the Advice For Authors FAQ.

Some examples:

NEW All the King's 5/? [PG-13] TNG (Marrissa Stories #3)
REV Battle For Bajor 4/8 [PG] TNG (Marrissa Stories #2)
REP Captain & Doctor 1/1 [G] TNG (P/C, Marrissa Stories)
COR Galaxy's End 1/53 [R] TOS (x-over, Star Wars)
DRA Harry's Mad [NC-17] VOY (parody)

C) The Story Header
-------------------
This is where we correct information which may be shortened in the
header. Any part that is not repeated in the Subject line should
be listed. You do not have to list anything here that is listed in
full in the Subject line. Order is not important here. It's best
explained though the use of an example.

(The example is numbered by line)

Title: All The Kings Horses 1
Author: Stephen Ratliff (srat...@runet.edu) 2
Series: TNG Marrissa Stories 3
Part: NEW 1/? 4
Rating: [PG] 5
Codes: Rene Picard/f 6

Summary: Captain Picard takes his newly adopted daughter Marrissa
home to meet his family. Marrissa deals with the loss of her
parents and a local bully. 7

Disclaimer: Paramount, the great and powerful, owns all of Star
Trek. I merely claim this story. 8

Warning: This Story contains lots of grief, a little girl who can't get
though a story without winning and other items witch may upset the
reader. 9

Now for the explanation. I'll be pulling out certain lines in the
text, in order to help maintain a list of what was posted for the annual
ASC awards in February. The Subject, From, Date, and the first 6 of
these lines are the ones I pull. Now to explain each part ...

Line number 1 is the Title line. Since we wish that you would keep
the title in the subject brief, this field allows you to put those
long titles we enjoy.

Line number 2 is the Author line. This allows me to make sure the
author is correct in my listing. If you don't put it, I'll take it
from the From line.

Line number 3 is the Series. This allows you to list your sub-series
as well as the series it is in.

Line number 4 is the Part. It consists of the Post name and the
part/last part. The same rules apply as above.

Line number 5 is Rating. Put the rating in [] and any codes such as
h-c here.

Line number 6 (New) is Codes. Put all the romance codes, and story
types here.

Number 7 is the summary for the archive index. You may include this
in a separate post.

Number 8 is the Disclaimer. Be creative but give credit where credit
is due.

Number 9 is the warnings. If there is something that may bother
someone, let them know here.

D) The Summary
--------------
The Story Index for the archive requires a short summary. Our Index
Maintainer would like all authors to provide one for their new stories.
Stephen would like a 3-4 line non-spoiling summary for each newly posted
story.

Some people in order to prevent spoilage place this header in a separate
post labeled SYNOPSIS, SUMMARY or the like. Some include it as part 0/?
The Maintainers encourage such behavior. If you do not post such a
SYNOPSIS, please make sure all the information from the story header is
in the first part.

Please have all of this in the first 40(20 preferred) lines it makes
Alara, and my jobs easier

V) More About...
================

A) The Archive
--------------

1) A bit of history .....

The Alt.StarTrek.Creative archive was started by Joseph S Young back in
the early 1991. He maintained it on ftp.cis.ksu.edu until April of
1995.

During the summer of 95 a search was made for a server willing to house
the archive. In July, our new Archivist, Alara Rogers, announced the
new location, healer.com.

In January of 1996, the archive was moved to gdw.com due to its better
connection (it was healer.com's ISP). Then in March, yet another change
was announced. The name was being changed to token.net.

In August of 1996, token.net kicked us off due to bandwith use.
Alara found us a new location at aviary.share.net

In January of 1998, Alara announced her impending retirement. A team
was set up to replace her. The initial members of the team were:
Katherine Fritz and Dina Lerret

2) Archive Contacts .....

Due to the way the archive is run, who you contact is based on what you
want done.

a) To have a story added: post to alt.startrek.creative or e-mail to:
submi...@webamused.com

b) To have a story removed: e-mail to Dina Lerret

c) To add or change a summary in the index, or correct a link: e-mail
srat...@runet.edu

d) To compliment the archive team: e-mail the whole group
Backlog Archivist: Alara Rogers (al...@netcom.com)
New Archivist: Dina Lerret (r.le...@usa.net)
Post Formatter/Collector: Katherine Fritz (reds...@ix.netcom.com)
Index Maintainer: Stephen Ratliff (srat...@runet.edu)

3) Linking to the Archive .....

After discussion on the group, the following guidelines have been
announced for linking to stories in the archive (linking to the achive
itself, and it's sub-directories remains unrestricted)

a. If an author does not want to be *linked* anywhere but official index
pages without permission, they must say so in the disclaimer portion.

b. If an author does say no, indexers must not link their story.

c. If an author requests to be removed, indexers should remove their
link promptly and without being snide.

d. it is polite to write authors when you are creating an index that they
are on, if for no better reason than that they'd probably be interested
in the subject matter of the index. (I mean, if you're a C/P writer, and
someone creates a C/P index and puts you on it, odds are you'd like to
look at that index because you yourself may not know all those C/P
stories that the indexer found.) However, it is not required.

4) Arrangement of the Archive .....

The Archive is arranged around several main directories. The biggest of
these are the story, parody, and adult directories. Each of these are
split by series (tos, tng, ds9, voy, misc, combined, and sometimes
others) Any series of stories that has more than 15 stories in it may
get it's own directory off one of these directories at the discretion of
the archivists.

There are also directories filled with poems, pic(tures), info, reviews,
and tech documents, plus other info.

5) The Archive Team .....

Katherine Fritz (reds...@ix.netcom.com)
Post Collector/Formatter
Constable Katie collects individual story posts from ASC, ASCEM,
and ASCA. and gathers the parts into one file which she uploads
to the /incoming directory at the archive. She prepares a
detailed upload log telling Dina the status of the files in
/incoming, and suggesting the final destination directories
for the files. Authors also may email stories directly to
the Constable at submi...@webamused.com -- plain ASCII text
only, please, either in the body of the message or as an
attachment. See the formatting section in the Advice For
Authors FAQ for further instructions on format.

Dina Lerret (r.le...@usa.net)
New Archivist
Dina double-checks Katie's logs and may decide upon a
different directory. If so, she will then discuss it
with Constable Katie to determine why they disagreed.
Dina is responsible for moving files out of /incoming to
their final destination directories, and for updating the
index files in the archive. Authors wishing stories to
be revised, removed or moved to a different directory
should contact Dina.

Alara Rogers (al...@netcom.com)
Backlog Archivist, places everything that got backlogged into the
archive.

Stephen Ratliff (srat...@runet.edu)
Index Maintainer, handles everything dealing with the web
interface to the archive.

6) Location .......

B) The Index To the Archive
---------------------------

1) A Bit of History...

In the Fall of 1995, the call for an index to the archive got answered.
Matt Steenberg began a project to provide summaries for every story in
the archive. He called for volunteer summarizers and began the massive
project.

However Matt seemed to have disappeared off the face of the earth in
July of '96. So after waiting for several months, the FAQ
Maintainer, Stephen Ratliff took over the job.

As the Index Maintainer will graduate in December of '98, he is
looking for a replacement.

2) Organization...

The Index is structured around a main web page with links to pages for
each directory of the archive. The adult section is linked off their
own page, as is the Parody Page. Some pages are divided due to size.

3) Location...

http://stat248-001.residents.stolaf.edu/ASC/
http://archive.nu/

4) Staff

The Index is a volenteer project with many summarizers helping to
maintain it. Stephen Ratliff currently maintains the whole index.
Carol Thomas is the Adult Story Summarizer. Kattz helps edit the
entries.

Stephen takes care of the FAQs and answers questions regarding
formatting and general newsgroup questions. He posts the FAQs every
Tuesday. He writes fan fic following the adventures of Marrissa from
the TNG episode "Disaster"
He's also acquired the Index and does our yearly awards.

Alara Rogers "Alara"
Title: Alt.StarTrek.Creative Archivist. (Backlog division)
"Hired": July 25, 1995
Email: al...@netcom.net
al...@mindspring.com

Alara takes care of the main archive. She answers all the
where is the archive questions. She writes mainly Q fan fic.
Alar is now Backlog Archivist.

Mercutio
Title: Alt.Fan.Q ftp.europa.com Archivist
"Hired": started writing Q fan fic in April of 1995, and
took over the Q archive from Alara later the same year
Email: merc...@europa.com

Mercutio takes care of the Q fan fic archive. She also posts
Q fan fic as well.

Name: Ruth Gifford
Title: FAQ Maintainer for Alt.Startrek.Creative.Erotica.Moderated
Hired: September 3, 1996
e-mail address: eres...@cyberg8t.com

Ruth maintains the FAQ for alt.startrek.creative.erotica, which is a
newsgroup specifically geared toward the posting of erotic Star Trek fan
fiction. She answers questions about the ASCE FAQ, and general
questions about the newsgroup. She write serious erotic fan
fiction (the Sara McNeil stories, "My Fair Jeanne, and "His Beloved
Pet" among others), and when the mood strikes her, she's been known
to write parodies ("PythonTrek," and "Girlfriends" are her favorites)
as well.

Alexas
Title: Alt.StarTrek.Creative.Erotica.Moderated Moderator
"Hired": August of 1997
Email: ale...@earthlink.net

Alexas is ASCEM's Moderator, which basically means that she plays filter
to all the postings to that newsgroup.

She is a teacher of English and various & sundry other subjects, and
has always been more of an editor than a writer. In fact, with the
exception of some extraordinarily bad poetry in high school, Alexas
stopped writing anything but nonfic prose when she was twelve.

Anne Wasserman
Title: ASCEM-L List Mom
"Hired": August 6, 1997
E-Mail: ann...@aol.com
I have been a fan of Trek since the very first TOS show aired and
it is TOS I am most loyal to. I was never very fond of TNG although I will
tape and watch almost anything with Data in it. DS9 underwhelmed me as well
although I am becoming more tolerant of it. I really appreciate what the
actors have done for the characters of Jake and Sisko. It is one of the
nicest father/son relationships around. I also enjoy the interaction
between Jake and Nog. Then there's VOY. I resisted as long as possible,
but you know what they say about it being futile. Despite what the
writers have done, I still think that the first two years were terrific.
My two favorites are Kim and Paris. My favorite line is anytime Janeway
says "Battlestations."
I write Paris/Kim slash. Six stories to date. I use the episodes
we see on-screen and then try to weave my fic into their plots.
I never even knew slash existed until I was surfing late one
night and found the Archive. First I read everything obsessively, then
I started watching VOY and DS9, then writing fic and now I run the
ASCEML list. All I can say is thank g-d for Starbucks bottled coffee. I
don't want to know where this will take me next.
I also enjoy B5 and, of course, the X-Files. I'll leave it up to
you to decide which couple I prefer. I have been a skiffy <dodging
vegetables> fan for years, mostly print.
In real life (not that I have one) I work at a small Native American
museum near the Chicago area. Fortunately, I do most of my work at home
so they don't know what I *really* do with my time.

"Constable Katie" collects story posts for the ASC archive from ASC,
ASCA and ASCEM, checks formatting and uploads them to the archive.
along with a disposition log for her co-conspirator, Dina. She gets
persnickety about formatting, UUencoding and smartquotes, and she's
not sure why she volunteered to do this yet. In her non-existent
spare time (ha!), she's a journalist-turned-fundraiser, is married and
has a small son. She writes mostly Voyager fiction, and is pleased
but slightly embarrassed to have won an ASCEM Golden O for her first
foray into the world of Treksmut. On the other hand, her husband is
Captain Jinx, winner of a fistful of Golden O's, so obviously Treksmut
"been berry berry good" to her, and she shouldn't complain.
