Response to Gabrielle Lawson's AOS impact challenge
The Butterfly
By Rob Morris
2259, USS Enterprise
Kirk was already tired of it.
“Sir, I had nae idea that my efforts at transwarp beaming would
achieve such a result.”
“It’s okay, Scotty.”
“Sorry about your uniform.”
“It’s okay, Scotty.”
“Sorry about your leg.”
“It’s okay, Scotty.”
“And—your printed books.”
“It’s okay, Scotty.”
“I was trying to recreate what that old Vulcan showed me.”
“It’s okay, Scotty.”
“I suppose it only made sense he was mad, but..”
Kirk looked him in the eye.
“I said it’s okay, Scotty. Miss Uhura, is he…”
“On-screen, Captain.”
Kirk nodded at the senior legend.
“Admiral Archer, sir---we found your dog.”

“No. I think that we’ve been challenged by this Q, and we will move to
meet that challenge.”
Security Chief Sela Yar shook her head.
“Sir? On New Seleya, we learned to avoid the biggest dog.”
“Point taken, Mister Yar. But this dog invaded our yard. Life didn’t
evolve by not taking chances.”
Will Riker didn’t need Troi’s senses to see that keeping his Captain
and Security Chief from butting heads would be hard.
“He has a point, Mister Yar. After all, where would our good Captain
Dennis Soong be if Arik Soong hadn’t shifted to creating artificial
life forms?”

“Colonel Kira?”
“You are the new Constable?”
“Yes. Elim Garak. I’m pleased to have this opportunity. Everyone
thinks of Cardassians as purely economic creatures.”
“If you know how to do the job, that is all I am concerned with.”
“Yes, well…those marks on your face. Are they…”
“Many Bajorans were so marked when the Borg withdrew, Mister Garak.
You should know that.”
“Ah, yes…sorry. I’ll go check out my office.”
The Colonel turned to her XO.
“Your opinion, Number One?”
“None needed. Feigning social awkwardness like he did is a sure sign
of The Onyx Order.”
“Very astute, Mister Sisko.”

2372, The Delta Quadrant
Janeway stared at the packet.
“I’m finding this hard to believe.”
Chakotay, leader of the Maquis rebellion against what he and others
felt was a disastrous treaty with the Dominion, was finally shown the
data involved.
“That is hard to believe.”
Tom Paris, her mole inside Chakotay’s ship, was also incredulous.
“Instructions on how to get home?”
Science Officer Hansen pored over the tons of maps.
“But if we choose to explore, we know what to hit, and what to avoid.”
“Want to be my XO, Chakotay?”
“Fine—but who gave us all this?”
“It was—Ambassador Spock—I think.”
Great looks at various might-have-beens, Rob. The first one is my
absolute favorite.
Thanks for posting.
