Scene: Starfleet Command Docking Bay 1
The runabout dropped from impulse drives to thrusters as it
maneuvered into Earth's atmosphere and began it's smooth descent down to the
docking bay. Sitting alone in a small compartment in the back, Sujatha
stared gloomily out the window. Earth was a beautiful world, a world that
had not been ravaged by war in centuries, a world with almost as much untamed
beauty as Arcturus save her world had been devastated by civil war. And she
missed the Pearson. A captain should never be torn from her ship. Amputating
a limb was easier. Her 'people' needed her and she needed her crew but she
consoled herself that this was the only way she could save her crew.
The runabout came to a stop and Sujatha rose from her seat, grabbing
her few belongings as the pilot shouted from the cockpit, "We've arrived
Captain Allison."
The Arcturan woman nodded, "I've noticed." She headed to the opening
hatch which slowly opened into the docking ring of Starfleet Command HQ in
San Fransisco. As she stepped out, she was surprised to see a strange woman
waiting for her. The woman had blond hair that fell to her shoulders and a
warm smile that greeted Sujatha's appearance. She was fit, with a body of a
woman in her 20's and a strong gait but the few gray hairs on her head and
the few wrinkles revealed her as a woman much older but it was obvious she
did nothing artificial to hide her age. Sujatha was impressed but puzzled
when the woman reached her and offered her a hand.
Sujatha took it slowly as she looked into the woman's blue eyes.
They were warm and compassionate but she could detect a steely determination
and an iron will behind that. The woman's voice was soft and almost musical,
"Hello, Captain Allison. You don't know me but I've heard a lot about you.
My name is Amanda Wagner, Scott's mother. You can just call me Amanda. My
son sent a subspace message ahead of you inforing me of your imminent
arrival and he asked me if my husband and I could take care of you during
your visit here. I never could resist my son anything. Unless you have other
arrangements, feel free to stay with use our apartment in San Fransisco."
"Thank you, Amanda," Sujatha began, But I wouldn't want to cause you
or your husband any trouble..."
"Don't be silly, girl," Amanda waved off her protest. Sujatha's eyes
just popped out in amazement. /Girl. Did she call me a girl? That's a new
one./ Amanda Wagner continued, "It's no trouble at all. Besides, Scott
insisted and my son isn't one to beg his parents for much. Children and
their independance and all. Have any children?"
Sujatha paused and answered cautiously, "One. A son."
Amanda smiled, "That's beautiful. If you don't mind me asking,
what's his name?"
"Sirdar."
"That's a beautiful name." Amanda took a deep breath and looked
carefully at Sujatha before asking slowly, "I know it's none of my business
but he's not Scott's is he?"
Sujatha laughed awkwardly and quickly protested, "No. No. He's not."
Amanda relaxed visibly, "I'm sorry Sujatha but I'm his mother and I
worry constantly. I hope you understand. I mean, he called 'just' to ask us
to take care of you while you were here and that means you must be someone
special."
"Scott and I are..." Sujatha began to answer when she realized she
wasn't quite sure exactly what she and Scott were. /Fellow officers. We've
progressed beyond that. Acquiantances. I think we know each other a little
better then that. Confidantes. Not quite. Lovers. We've never -really-
reached that stage./ "Friends," she finally decided on.
"Well. That's good. Having no friends was never a problem with our
Scott. Too many friends and the wrong kind of friends was always our main
concern," Sujatha finished, "The transporter to our apartment is this way,"
Amanda pointed down the street, "After you. I have some pictures of Scott
when he was real small if you want to see them."
Sujatha laughed with genuine humor, "I would -love- to see them."
