The great day had finally come.

After four years of digging through circuit schematics, technical
manuals and a myriad of knowledge about apparently every subject in the universe, Juliana Lorress could call herself Ensign - well almost.
Technically speaking she was still a Cadet of Starfleet Academy now on her way to Armstrong Lunar Base. There she would undergo a final evaluation test before the Personnel Officers would decide about her first
assignment.

Ensign Lorress was exited and afraid but most of all happy. To her
Starfleet was the greatest opportunity available to anyone in this galaxy.
Being accepted into the Academy four years had been like a second
birthday to her. In fact, she had celebrated that day with her classmates
and friends every year since than.

And now, if she didn´t screw up she would be on her way tot he stars
very, very soon. Of course, screwing up was not an option for the young
Ensign.

Last night Juliana had talked to her parents via subspace. Her schedule
had been to tight for a personal visit and Juliana doubted that she
would have time for it after her ALB training, so a long-distance talk had
to suffice.

Juliana had had a lumb in her throat when she had bid her mother
good-bye but now as the Academy shuttle approached Armstrong Lunar Base even
that was forgotten.

Ensign Lorress looked at the other five cadets that were aboard the
shuttle, especially at the dignified young Vulcan across from her.
Sivahr had been one of the best of this years graduation class. Without
doubt, he would become an outstanding science officer before long. However, Juliana wondered if his cool logic allowed him to really enjoy what was about to begin for them. He could probably calculate the chances of any given Federation citizen to be accepted into Starfleet in his head, but could he really feel joy about being one of them ?

Juliana for one could. Since her admission into the Academy she had
worked hard and pushed herself to the limit mentally and physically and
she had loved it. After this stupid mistake in the lab where she had
allowed her nanites to escape and cause mischief in the computer system Juliana had been afraid that she would be kicked out of the Academy but she had gotten away with a black eye. Aside from that one reprimand her record was pure and clean and she was determined to make up for this one dark spot in the future.

The shuttle touched the ground of ALB´s hangar bay soft as a feather.

[Here we are.] the pilot informed his passengers [The best wishes to
all of you.]

As the group of cadets emerged, they were greeted by a red-haired man
in a mustard uniform, bearing the insignia of a Chief Warrant Officer.

"Good morning gentlebeings and welcome to Armstrong Lunar Base." he
greeted them with a booming voice, "I am Chief Bryce, Assistant
Quatermaster and I will assign you to your temporary quaters until your final testings begin."

The Chief handed each cadet a PADD.

"On this Personal Access Display Device you will find information about
Armstrong Lunar Base, about the training procedures that you are about
to undergo and the time when you are scheduled to report to Admiral
von Mainzel the Commander of Armstrong Lunar Base. Good luck to you all."

Juliana called up the information on her PADD to find that she had only
a little over thirty minutes before she was supposed to report to
Admiral von Mainzel. Luckily, the PADD also provided full directions to both her quaters and the Admiral´s Oval Office.

As the cadets marched away in a row to find their quaters Juliana noted
that she stuck out like a sore thumb in their littel group. Not that
this was unusual for her, with her 1.96 metre frame she usually looked
like an organs´ pipe among other humans and humanoids.

Ensign Lorress´quater looked sterile and unpersonal as it could be
expected from a place where cadets and other trainees crashed for a while before assigned to another post. Juliana hoped that she would be one of them soon. She had just dumbed her duffel bag on the bed, straightened her uniform and made her way to the Oval Officer, following the directions on her PADD. Better be there five minutes too early than five minutes too late.

With a deep breath Juliana stepped into the office and presented
herself to the officer half hidden behind a desk full of PADD´s and data
chips.

"Ensign Juliana Lorress, reporting to Admiral von Mainzel as ordered
sir" she announced, standing perfectly at attention.

B. Background Summary:
-----------------------
Juliana Lorress grew up in Mount Olympus on the planet Mars, Sol
system. Her mother is an hydrologist working for a smaller scale
terraforming project on the red planet, while her father is a
civilian administrator on the orbital Utopia Planitia shipyards.
Juliana always had a keen interest in technology and since her father
took her up to the shiyards as a kid, she was hooked. She wanted to be
an engineer but not any kind but a Starfleet engineer.
Her parents supported her wishes and encouraged her to engage in
physical activity that would help her offset the penalties of being a
native of a low-gravity world.
After a one-year stint as an intern in the civilian engineering branch
of Utopia Planitia, Juliana managed to be accepted into Starfleet
Academy where she threw herself at her studies.
During one particular lesson her interest in cardassian technology was
piqued, mostly because high-tech of that origin was held in contempt
by most of her instructors. Juliana found it quite refreshing to work
with less-than-perfect toys and soon she was known as the "Cardie"
among her classmates.
Her interest in martial arts brought her into contact with several
security officers-to-be and she took advanced courses in that field,
managing to qualify as a security crewman if only in the bottom half
of her class in this case.
However, her grades in engineering more than offset the average
performance in security. Soon Juliana became fascinated by nanites and
naco-mechanics with her graduation thesis being labeled "The use of
nano-mechanical devices and robots in Starship diagnosis routines".
She is still ashamed of an accident where she accidentally set nanites
free in an Academy computer, no so much because of the reprimal but
because she felt she screwed up.

----------------------
160601 Commissioned as Ensign (O-1).

120615 Entered Star Fleet Academy.
160601 Commissioned as Ensign (O-1).
C. Medals and Commendations:

------------------------------------------------------------------------
V. Skills Profile
------------------
Juliana is a tinkerer at heart, fascinated by the nitty-gritty details
of any problem, may it be mechanical, scientific or intellectual in
nature.

She knows how to take things apart and usually knows how to put them
back together. In case these things are of cardassian origin they
somethimes work better afterwards than they did before.

Unlike many engineers who specialize in propulsion systems, Juliana is
in love with nano-technology and she´s planning to take some medical
classes to see how her knowledge of micro-mechanics can be applied in that area as well. Diagnosing a virus in a computer can´t be that far
from diagnosing it in a living body after all.

Her only problem if it can be called one, is that Juliana is in awe
with the possibilities and chances Starfleet has to offer. She often
feels that she has to live up to some unachievable standard to be worthy
of being called a Starfleet officer.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
VI. Recent Fitness Report
--------------------------
Thanks to regular workout and Starfleet security training Ensign
Lorress is in excellent physical health and fit for duty without
restrictions. While her very tall, slender frame is the result of genetic
adaption to the marsian environment she is in no way hampered by 1.0 g conditions.

LT. Harn Axelrod M.D., Medical Officer Starfleet Academy
------------------------------------------------------------------------
VII. Psychological Profile
---------------------------
An ambitious, hard worker Ensign Lorress will solve a problem set before her through sheer stubborness if nothing else works. Always trying to be
the more-than-perfect officer, she will have to learn how to relax a bit
when on duty.

Counsellor Morvehl, Starfleet Academy

------------------------------------------------------------------------
VIII. Current Recreational Interests
-------------------------------------
Since her early youth Juliana turned to physical training to overcome
the disadvantages associated with growing up on a low gravity world such as Mars. What started as mere necessity became genuine interest. She enjoys swimming, long-distance running and Aikido where she works towards her first black belt.

When not working out, she tinkers with all kinds of cardassian technology she can get her hands on.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
IX. Miscellaneous Information
------------------------------
Thanks to her study of the japanese martial art Aikido, Juliana has
some basic knowledge of japanese language, writing and culture. She has also a basic udnerstanding of cardassian language and writing as it relates to technical devices.
