USS YAMATO: Closing On Target
POSTED BY: Federico Colnago as ENS Seelee Reon
STARDATE: 220209.1155 UTC
MD: 2.1552
SCENE: Draken IV, close to infection ground zero point
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Reon increased the magnification of his binoculars. The optic quickly
adapted and got into focus. He slowly rotated his head around, scouting
the surroundings for any signs of... well, of anything out of the
ordinary. They didn't exactly know where they were going, and as things
were, they even didn't know what they were looking for.

It was one of those situations were you find out when you see it. This
at least was the shared hope. The data extracted from both the YAMATO
and the Draken IV Government's records were incomplete at best. Not
surprisingly.

Shortly after discovering the ruins, which by now everybody was keen on
considering somewhere near Ground Zero of this new infection, the YAMATO
had been attacked during its past mission. A sabotage, a fight with
three Drakar Imperium ships and a change of government on the planet
after it had left a lot of holes around.

Reon lowered his binoculars, and threw them back on the seat of the
truck. "Holy moley cowley... the Prophets only know if I'd give my right
arm to know exactly what are we scouting for here! This is pointless by
all means."

"Well Ensign, we know we're on the right truck." Commander Sheldon said.
"We're just not here yet, evidently."

"Exactly my point. Where is this 'where'?" He turned to look back at
her, her eyes peeking at him from over her dusty mouth mask, looking at
him with a mix of understanding and resolution.

"Ok, ok." Reon added. "I'll take another look around, but if nothing
catches my eyes now, we'll go down the road this way. At least it's less
bumpy than the other side."

"Conceded." Came the reply from the truck.

Taking the binoculars again, he exhaled deeply, trying to flush out his
frustration. Thinking of Tokath, back at CAMP-1 overlooking doctors and
nurses, he strongly believed to have made the wrong call this time
around. He then started to look around once again, to try and get some
more consisted new direction to follow.

As shortly before, nothing caught his eyes at first.

The landscape of this part of Draken IV was boring at best. Dusty almost
barren hills and valley were constantly filling the horizon. A few small
rivers were cutting lines of silver deep down rifts and small canyons.
Vegetation was scarce, and very low on the ground because of the winds.
There was very rare sign of artificial presence here, as this zone had
been mostly abandoned after the first attack of years ago. The few
villages visible seemed to have suffered the blunt of the infection
worse than any other part of Draken he had seen so far.

He was passing his gaze over one of those small conglomerates of houses
and farms, just like any other he had scouted before, when something
caught his eye at the border of his field of view.

Increasing the magnification of his binoculars to the max, he tried to
take a better look at that unusual spot of landscape.

It was a darker clustering of rocks. He wouldn't have considered it
special in any way, on any other given planet, but here it was just
different from the general geological background to attract attention.

Reon lowered the device to wipe of sweat from his forehead, and noticed
that Commander Sheldon had dropped off the truck as well, and had come
at his side.

"Found something Ensign?" She inquired.

"I might, Commander." Reon answered, while pointing with his hand at a
spot on the horizon.

He raised the binoculars again, holding his breath to stabilize himself,
and avoid vibration on the zoomed view.

"Gotcha!"

"Ensign?"

He passed the device to Sheldon, while explaining. "Take a look down
there Commander. I believe those rocks are most definitely the results
of human labour. They seem out of place, very unnatural at best. We
might have found us some ruins after all... I strongly suggest taking a
deviation toward there and go take a closer look. Something tells me
that taking samples from around there would be more significant than any
other places around here."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NRPG: I've just read again some of the older posts (#507 and around
there) about the conclusion of the latest Draken IV mission. Shall we
get to the ruins again, after all?

Anyway... just throwing something there, as I'm still very much up for a
JP with you Francis, to play with Tamara a bit.

If anyone needs me to JP with NPC at CAMP-1 (Ens. Nilsoon or 1st
Corporal Arela) just drop me a line! Or use (but don't abuse) any of
them if you need so.
