The Washington Post will report tomorrow that John Harkes has been sent to
Nottingham Forrest on a three month loan. He was originally there on a
two week trial.

This deal, however, does not fix DCUnited's salary cap problems, as
Harkes' salary continues to count against DC's total figure. DCU will
continue to try and work out a trade, or hope Nott. Forrest agrees to
purchase Harkes outright.

Well, the MLS season doesn't start until March, so there is plenty of time
for Forest to make up their minds. Hopefully they will let Harkes join
permanently, and that will solve DCU's cap troubles. I don't forsee anyone
stateside willing to trade for him, due to the large salary he commands and
the fact that many teams have problems of their own with the cap. Good luck
to John on securing a spot at Forest!

Yes, the report says Atkinson has until early March to decide, and if he
doesn't want Harkes permanently, he has to be back by March 20 (the
opener).

I think they'll find somebody (assuming they have to), but I'm not
counting on DC getting any value. Tampa is still supposedly way under
the cap and interested. I think Dallas would take Harkes off their
hands, but would give almost nothing for him.

I can tell you exactly how this is going to work out:

* Harkes does relatively well at Forest
* Big Fat Ron calls Sunil about buying Harkes
* Sunil gives BFR some outrageously high price
* BFR tells Sunil to bite him and breaks off negotiation
* DC United, still in salary cap trouble, starts shopping Harkes around MLS
* Other MLS teams, knowing that they've got DC United over a barrel, give DC
United ridiculously low-ball offers for Harkes
* DC United, knowing that they're under the gun, accepts the least
ridiculously low-ball offer they receive.
* The trade is finalized and it hits the press.
* Everyone will note the absolute bargain price for which somebody got John
Harkes
* DC United fans will use that trade as further evidence that there's a
vast anti-DCU conspiracy in MLS.

You heard it here first.

You're likely to be correct. I read somewhere recently that Sunil, when
Charlton came to him asking about buying Wynalda, quoted a *1.5 MILLION*
pricetag. Wow. No wonder they said thanks but no thanks. Let's hope that he
doesn't shaft Harkes in the same manner. "We've got to keep our good American
players" -um right.

Yes, but Billy Clinton made a similar mistake with the Paula

And the alternative to following all this is what? Follow the Premier
League, where you get to see "your" team once or twice a year on TV, if you're
lucky? Follow your local A-League affiliate?

Sure, the SEM is not the ideal set-up. In fact, I hate it. But what am
I supposed to do? What good does it do me to watch the best soccer league in the
US go under?

actually, i think oliver does a bit better than that, given that he's the
soccer-on-TV guru and all. 8-)

and i take issue with the idea that this is all a bunch of BS.
competitively, single entity is annoying, granted. but for a guy who digs
the premiership as much for the personalitites and politics as for the
soccer, i think watching to see where johnny harkes is going to land -
and where the league *wants* johnny harkes to land - is a hoot.

I don't have the article from the Post on hand, but the probable transfer
figure that was quoted was "between 500K and 1Mil"[US$ i believe]. Also,
United will likely arrange some form of trade well before the deadline.
Even if it's just for draft picks--which is probably about all we could
afford ;)--Harkes will be traded. If he does stay in England, then we'll
owe the tradee "future considerations". So while I'm happy for Harkesie,
this loan does not solve our problem. Don't get me wrong, I like Harkes.
But losing him for 3 or 4 draft picks would not be nearly as bad as losing
RDA in the same way. Maybe I'm just getting too used to this... United's
survived this kind of trade before, I have little doubt they will survive
this just fine.

Sure it is. That's what's called "being a fan."
