On what basis? 2 points for a win before 1981, or 3? Premiership/First
Division only?

Preston North End? Bolton Wanderers? Sheffield Weds/United? There has to be
someone who was a top team decades ago up there somewhere.

If you're including European success then Forest may be hanging around too.

I would have said:

PNE (first winners, maybe first two seasons I can't remember, and pretty
consistently thereabouts until the 1960's)

Sunderland (bigger than Newcastle for most of the 20th century)

Sheffield United (better than most teams at staying in the top division
even if they haven't won it for 100 years)

Some northern team that's been around a long time, lined up for most of the
1920', '30s and '40s with a midfield of Stan, Bert and Charlie grinding out
draws in February by hacking the shins off their opponents (i.e. Blackburn,
Burnley, Oldham or Bolton, possibly Huddersfield United)

Yes, that's all of them - hope you didn't cheat? Sunderland in 10th

Burnley in 9th spot, with 5167.

http://www.statto.com/football/stats/england/all-time-table

Must say I was surprised to see PNE, Wolves and Sheffield Utd so high.
And sad too, to see that nowadays it's just those with the money who
consistently remain around the top. Monopolies haven't been good for
the national game, especially those modern monopolies like Manchester
United, Chelsea and Man City which have left their feeder clubs
emasculated. What if Everton had been able to keep Rooney? West Ham,
Tevez? In the old days Wolves could compete on a level playing field,
financially speaking. Now they wouldn't have a hope of signing a
Torres, or an 18 million de Gea. That's why football lost its soul as
soon as Man Utd raised the stakes with their record-breaking transfer
fees paid for Keane, Veron, Ferdinand and others. That was the moment
12 or 15 other Premier League clubs were excluded from the party and
became slaves to an elite few.

Me? I hate it. The sooner English football collapses the better.

If you read my post carefully you should see that I haven't pinned
*all* the blame on Utd, but they certainly set the ball rolling on the
"SKY era", and they are every bit as much to blame for the state of the
game as the mercenary clubs you like to disparage - Chelsea and man
City, for example.

Utd were first to do it; now there is an elite few who maintain it. And
Liverpool have been just as culpable *since* Utd started it.

Now do you understand?

Indeed, United "raised the stakes first" as you put it, and now they're
whining because other clubs are doing exactly the same thing while United
are having to sell "world class stars" such as Wes Brown and John O'Shea for
peanuts, just to afford Rooney's regular tantrum-driven wage increases.

No, I didn't cheat but I knew that for the first 70 years of the Football
League it was largely dominated by teams in northern towns (and I have met
with the treasurers at a few clubs where we discussed all this). Before the
era of TV revenues and in the days of the salary cap, most of the income
came from gate receipts. Season ticket sales were much lower as a
proportion of total ticket sales because fewer supporters had the money to
pay up front. Fewer people had cars so the teams that did best were those in
industrial towns with a lot of people living close by who could walk to the
ground. Ticket prices were much more reasonable and attendances of over
60,000 were not uncommon. Towns like Sunderland and Blackburn did well
because they could build a relatively large stadiums near the middle of the
town, which wasn't so easy in the bigger cities.

Hah. Bootle are last in the table playing just 22 games. 1892-1893.

If they hadn't gone under then there would be no Liverpool FC (Booo!)
;-)

In fact, would Liverpool rise higher if the scores were amalgamted?

The Rooney sale was nothing to do with feeder clubs. It was down to the
power of the agent. I would argue that they are the ones who've created
the "big money" top 6 and also been responsible for the downfall of some
fantastic clubs.

They are the first who should be ripped out of the game IMHO.

I believe that clubs joining the premiership such as Swansea and Norwich
would be closer to the title if the agent were removed.

It's only 30 years ago when management was the big decider. Clough,
Paisley, Kendall, Saunders and Robson, for instance.

It should be the same again for me. Yet now, we're seeing Entrepreneurs,
Sheikhs and Oligarchs being talked into signing 36 squad players. It's
obscene and derogatory to the rest of the pyramid. This also needs
nipping in the bud. A manager needs to sign or nurture squad players.
Not just buy them to keep them away from other clubs.

If we can solve the above two issues, then football can potentially
return to its previous competitive nature.

Money will always be involved. It is the nature of our society. We must
try to ensure that it doesn't buy the games soul though.

It's the same old crap, yet United have consistently had more home grown
players in their squad in the Premiership years, than any other club and it
has proven to be a winning formula.

"Raping" is a little strong.

However, fans of other clubs (including myself) see Arsenal as playing
the "we're top 4 - you're 12/17 - here's a contract, you're better off
with us" card far too frequently.

I would suggest you simply develop a youth training policy and tap into
the vast potential of North London and surrounding areas instead of
using evey other poor clubs facilities for development. Or maybe just
try it with both for a while.

Who knows. It may be of benefit. You may not have to pay millions (£5m
rising to £12 with triggers) on the next Walcott if you do.

Let me know when you achieve it. The rest of football may then
reconsider your godawful youth policy.

Cheers

Yes. I'm suggesting just that.

Arsenal have no worthwhile youth system. They have to use other clubs to
develop their players. They then take their pick as they are in the
unique position of being a top 4 premiership club and being able to pay
huge amounts of wages that their native club cannot.

It's obscene.

I do not see many other clubs being anywhere near so ruthless. Although

The Arsenal Academy is excellent and Liam Brady does an excellent job
coaching the youths. However Wenger sets the bar very high regarding
these young players making the transition into the senior squad. I am
talking about players of the quality of Jack Wilshere who will one day
be captain of England.

The one thing I liked about David Dein was his support of the club and
how he would travel mid-week to watch the reserves and youth players.

Many Everton fans don't see it that way, and whine about Rooney (and
other) transfers to bigger clubs all the time. I wouldn't find it too
difficult to believe that you railed against it at the time, yourself.

In any case, your argument above defeats your own anti-Arsenal comments.
No one is forced to accept any agreement, either to take on a young
player or to accept a transfer, etc. The whining is precious, though.

Everton has a long history of sending talented players to other clubs.
It's only natural that many Everton fans are quite bitter about this,
and your history of whining on Everton's behalf, well... heh.

I'm aware of the set up. Although Wilshere is the exception the proves
the rule, there are others like Bould that have played a pert in the
development of Wilshere. Hence why he has a more combatative side to his
game. Something Wenger seems to steer clear of.

I take back the comment they have "no worthwhile youth system". It is
worthwhile and it is set up to develop the work done by other clubs
acadamies.

Really? Why is that such a surprise?

Doesn't every Chairman take an active role in the club from top to bottom?

You're doing well at the moment. 2-1 up. Keep it up. You're in my

Hmm.

Have a history?

Where? Rooney apart, name another!

Your seem to have unbelievable views. Surely not all "Arsenal fans" are
this blinkered.

Actually, Everton fans don't "whine". They felt they were led up the
garden path by a comibnation of overdraft and Pro-active sports agtency
(Paul Stretford).

I agree.

We had little choice one Stretford manioukated a move to line his own
pocket.

But don't let the truth get in front of your bullshit assumptions.

What?

I am saying that you should be producing more Jack Wilshere's and
leaving the Walcott's to progress naturally at their own clubs.

You're blinkers seem to be superglued on.

Congratulations at KuKluxKl-AnField BTW. Grreat result, although
possibly undeserved. Jut 3 more results for my accumulator. ;-)

(More nibbles on the way methinks)

Sorry. Neither of them count. Dunne came from Home Farm in Dublin and
Ball came from Liverpool Academy and was picked up once released by
them. Neither were products of Bellefield.

You may have a point with Jeffers, but that was over 10 years ago and
Walter Smith dropped him for around 20 games prior to his sale anyway.

But to keep on topic - anyhow, anyway, anywhere that new signings can be
'poached' appears to be the way. If there were strict rules that when you
sign for a team - then you must stay five years - these agents would soon be
out of a job. However such is not the case so if its good for the geese,
then its also good for foreign teams to take PL players - which they do at
'alarming' prices. Look at Ronaldo - Fabregas, etc
Don't tell me they are not a loss to English football.

We just have to live with what we have.
Steve Rowley, Liam Brady and the reserve team are the backbone of Arsenal -
dunno nor care what goes on in other clubs -
Meanwhile, Toulouse defender Aymen Abdennour has stated that The Gunners are
keen to bring him to North London after a good start to his Ligue 1
campaign.
The Express says that Arsenal scouts were at the Anderlecht v Lokomotiv
Moscow match in the Europa League for a look at the 23 year-old Argentinian
striker Matias Suarez who plays for the Belgian giants.
Arsenal Chief Scout Steve Rowley was down at his favourite club on the South
Coast, Southampton, to have another look at their next big star Luke Shaw
who was on show as they easily beat Sheffield United 7-0 in the FA Youth Cup

So thats only a miniature of what goes on in the background, while we sit
here on the ditch, critiquing each others teams :-)

They weren't developed by Everton and sold. They came from other clubs
Academies and signed THEN sold.

It's the youngsters being poached at an early age that is more the issue
for me.

What it means is that the kid moves before he needs to at a price less
than they would potentially be worth once they've developed to say a 17
it 18 year old kid at their native club rather then being "nicked" and
playing the percentages at 12 or 13.

I would love to see stricter rules stopping this practice

> We just have to live with what we have.

Yes. It doesn't mean that football shouldn't see the morality of it and
place some rules into place though to help curtail the quite obvious
dubious practice. Does it?

Heh. The ditch indeed. Cheers Tommy. It's good to see that there are

Can't argue about the various scummy practices that are taking what little
pleasures we get, out of our lovely game :) -

I've witnessed several young lads from nursery clubs here in Ireland going
overseas and failling short of what was expected of them. They don't lose
out on it though. They come back more rounded players, tons of
coaching/training under their belt, with a pretty good knowledge of what
they're about. Then theres the little 'bribe' for their parents, and they
get to finish high/secondary school - which they may not do if they stay
home. And its bloody marvellous to see it when even one of them succeeds in
coming through.

Yet, theres no better training for young lads than a tough lower division
battle ground. I feel this gives them what appears to be missing in bought
in players today - (they're practically mercenaries)

Most if not all successful teams have the missing ingredients, pride and
loyalty and the will to go to the end. That goes out the window when a
weekly wage is 100,000 plus.

The world and usenet itself would be a nicer place if we could get rid of
(or ignore) the constant trolling and adhoms that some take a mischievuous
pleasure in formenting.

Cheers
Hope we can pul something out of the fire for Milan
