Assuming (and hoping) the result at Goodison reamins as is, today will

For Me, United but only one or two points ahead of Arsenal, who will
defy all the predictions of doom with gritty displays that will not fade
towards May. Chelsea third, but without the African Championship, who
knows... Fourth was going to Everton, but that display against Arsenal
makes me think that really they are not ready yet - it will be Liverpool.

I kind of disagree. I don't think Arsenal will fade. Dropping a
point or two here or there isn't fading but I fancy United to drop
fewer points. I think United will win it but I can't seperate Arsenal

Given Wenger's disciplinary record that's a fair enough opinion to
have.
We both agree Arsenal won't quite last the pace but for differing
reasons.
Can you really see Liverpool picking up 13 points more than Arsenal
between now and the end of the season?

Hmmm, looking at the fixture list, it's going to be late March before
Arsenal lose a game.

I think they'll drop a couple of points at Man City in early Feb., but
between now and the end of March I can only see them dropping 4 points.

That'll make the game at OT hugely important, as they don't have all
that many challenging games in the 2nd half of the season.

Saturday, 2nd Feb. could be a very important day - with Arsenal away at
Man City and us away at Spurs.

22nd March is another crucial weekend - we should take our usual 3
points from Liverpool, with Arsenal away at Chelsea.

To be honest, I'm getting a bit nervy over this one, as, despite the
bravado, we would appear to have a more difficult run from now to the
end of the season.

It's going to be a lot tighter than you think - but it'll only be
between United and Arsenal, I think.

Haha, no.

Arsenal will beat you lot at OT.

I think Arsenal will win by 5-7 points. They've already survived
losses of Fabregas, RVP, Hleb and Gallas.

They've played their games in the cold, their games away, and their
games at tough teams, but as I see it they haven't imploded yet.

They're the real deal.

It'll be Arsenal first, Chelsea/United battling it for second and
unfortunately ourselves for fourth place - confirmed by our result at
City which was our worst result of the season (not Reading or the loss
to United at Anfield).

Premiership games missed:

RVP 13
Gallas 7
Fabregas 5
Rosicky 5
Hleb 5

Rooney AND Tevez combined 12 (less than RVP)
Rio AND Vidic combined 5 (less than Gallas)
Ronaldo 5
Giggs 3

Arsenal seem to be weathering their injuries pretty well. What'd be
interesteing is to see Ronaldo knocked out for as long as RVP's been.

Why do you think drawing with City at their place, given their home

Individually it doesn't look bad. However, it was a horrendous
result.

Because on the same weekend Manchester United lost.

It's bad enough that we need three different teams to drop points, but
if we can't get 3 to take an advantage when any
of the three drop points (which won't happen every weekend), then who
are we kidding?

Graf Finklestein

But if you'd won at Reading, like you should have, then the result at
City would have been viewed as a very good point, which it was - plus,
you'd still be three points better off than you are now.

Saha's not a starter and he's hardly RVPs equal is he?

In any case my point was Arsenal have had their share of injuries, and
have coped pretty well for a team without depth.

Yes, when fit. If not better.

Also missing from the injury list posted is our no. 1 'keeper, also the
'keeper who would arguably be no. 2 and pushing for no. 1 these days is
a long-term absentee.

Yes, Arsenal are doing well, however, they have been fortunate that

If Saha had been fit at the start off the season he'd have been
playing. He now looks like a player who's afraid to get injured.
Before all his injuries he was among the top scorers in the

injury.

Well that is not our problem. You United fans are always crying about

The statistics agree with me - both signed in 2004 and have played
roughly the same number of games for current clubs.

RvP - 80 games / 26 goals.

Louis Saha - 81 games / 27 goals.

And we won the league last season despite having most of our first

Obviously, injuries and young talent are exclusive to Arsenal these

Perhaps if you thought about things for yourself, instead of believing

I am saying that you always use injuries as some sort of crutch. All
football teams have players that are injured and Utd are no exception.
With the money Utd have been spending there should be someone able to
step in.

Fucking wankers

That has nothing to do with this debate. Nice try at deflecting the
topic away from your usual bullshit, though.

But we haven't been spending - we're a net selling club over the last

Statistics are bunk and Saha and Van Persie are two very different
types of forward.

Sorry, if we're not allowed to use that argument in defence of Rooney
not being the most prolific striker in the league, you can't use it in
defence of Van Persie.

Oh, right. Stats. I forgot you get very anal about this kinda stuff.

Well, since it can be broken down so simply, then by your rationale
Marcus Bent of Wigan (7 league goals) is a better player than Wayne
Rooney (5 league goals).

Coz after all, the ststs prove it. LOL, fucking halfwit.

So why did you use goals stats to compare Saha with RVP then? Either
football is so simplistic it can be broken down to who is the better
player by mere stats alone, as was your argument, or it isn't, as...
is.. now suddenly your argument too.

And now suddenly they are a telling indicator after all.

I recognise this desperate Mancunian moving of goalposts.

Tell you what, rather than studying football by statistics and
spreadsheets, try watching a game and figuring out who the better
players are that way.

I never said anything in "defence". You are making it up as you did
with the horseshit about the stats.

It is a little bit different to collating stats on motor cars, or even

Another one out of their depth when it comes to facts and figures, I
see.

RvP is no playmaker in the Rooney mould, so who is he more comparable
with?

Either strikers are measured purely on statistics, or they're assessed
according to their all-round contribution.

If it's to be claimed that RvP is 'better' than Saha, how is this being
measured? - the only solid and comparable measurement is strike rate -
which makes them equally as good as each other.

But, apparently, this isn't right, because they're 'different kinds of
striker'.

However.... if a United fan uses the 'different kind of striker' defence
when Rooney's strike-rate is analysed, then it's claimed that he's a
striker, so can only be assessed on goals scored.

As it happens, I'd pick a fit Saha over most strikers in the
Premiership, as he has consistently delivered over many years. He can be
a lazy cunt at times, but his strike rate speaks for itself.

Unfortunately, I think his injury problems will see him leave OT either
in January, or at the end of the season.

And as we've already seen with the Bent/Rooney anomaly, this is not an
accurate indicator. Mark Hateley scored the same number of goals for
England, and in fewer games, than Peter Beardsley. Ergo, Hateley was
a better player according to your way of evaluating players.

No mention was made of Rooney. You made a comment about Saha being
better than RVP, I retorted, and you then referred to the stats as
evidence to validate your case. Which they don't. All that Rooney
guff above is bollocks.

> As it happens, I'd pick a fit Saha over most strikers in the

I disagree, as I did to start. He's an above-avergae striker, but no
more than that. He's a reserve - a handy one to have (when he isn't
injured), but to compare him to RVP is similar to comparing Walcott to
Rooney.

> Unfortunately, I think his injury problems will see him leave OT either
> in January, or at the end of the season.

He'll be replaced and won't be missed in the slightest I'm sure.

Well, I dunno if that's quite the reason for all the 'undisclosed
fees' (I have a sense it's more underhand than that), but Arsenal have
certainly been responsible for some very, very dodgy dealings where
young players are concerned.

Yes because "African schoolboys" are much more expensive than
established players that are stars in the Superliga or Bundesliga or
Ligue 1.

Yup, Chelsea got busted on the Cole affair, fair enough, and they were
rightly punished. And if the other thing you're referring to is the
Mikel thing - well, who knows what the fuck really went on there.
It's always gone on. Christ, I remember when that mad bastard Bates
got done for fiddling Kevin Wilson's tribunal transfer fee 20 years
ago.

But if you think we're the only one's bending the rules, you're either
naive or ignorant. Arsenal do have a terrible reputation regarding
the 'poaching' (other clubs' interpretations, not mine) of young
players.

Arsenal have pissed Barcalona off at least a couple of times. First
there was Fabregas, when Arsenal went behind the Barca's back to
negotiate terms with him and his representatives, and then refused to
pay Barca any compensation (although you were finally forced to after
appeal). Then you exploited the same loopholes to sign Fran Merida,
also from Barca. Add to this the controversies over Flamini, Lupoli,
et al...

The President of the French league branded Arsenal 'a disgrace' after
they exploited a legal loophole to sign Anelka way back when, and a
Sporting Lisbon director called Arsenal "a threat" after your club
signed Rui Fonte (I think I'm right in saying several appeals and
complaints were served with UEFA).

What Yid situation ?

I did no more than anyone else all things considered and there was
never any racist intent on my part just ignorance. I was chastised by
an older family member who is Jewish who explained the whole thing to
me and why people would find it offensive.

Please bear in mind that Spurs fans call themselves the "Yid Army".

And your sig is still incorrect BTW.

When you work out the salary's etc they end up being about the same.
Wenger pays his young signees a lot more than he'd have to pay young
English talent and his transfer budget icludes his squads wages.
That's the way he tempts them from big clubs all over Europe. A
different approach than most English clubs take. Not saying it's wrong
just different.

Glazers not the big spenders they appear to be
By David Bond
Telegraph 26/07/2007

Regardless of whether Manchester United eventually complete the
signing of Carlos Tevez from West Ham, the Premiership champions
have surprised English football this summer with their lavish spending
spree.

Casting off the first two years of caution under the ownership of the
Glazers, Sir Alex Ferguson has been brandishing the club's
chequebook with rare abandon, spending a total of £57.9 million on
three new players.

The apparently extravagant outlay - which could rise still further
when Tevez finally arrives at Old Trafford - has been possible
despite a decision to abandon plans last week to try to reduce their
costs by refinancing their mammoth £660m of borrowings.

Although it was only a year ago that the Glazers refinanced the loans
used to purchase the club in their controversial £790m
takeover in 2005, they had been in discussions with three banks, JP
Morgan, Deutsche Bank and the Royal Bank of Scotland, about a
new debt structure. Until two weeks ago, several plans were being
discussed including the issuing of a bond secured against future
ticket revenue. But any hopes of refinancing were scrapped amid fears
over rising interest rates and the jittery international
capital markets.

Yet despite being English football's most heavily indebted club,
United have embarked on a Roman Abramovich-style spending frenzy
since reclaiming the Premier League title from Chelsea in May.
Portuguese winger Nani was signed from Sporting Lisbon for a deal
worth up to £17.3m along with Brazil midfielder Anderson, signed from
Porto for a fee of as much as £20.4m. Next came Ferguson's
long-time transfer target Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich in a deal
worth up to £20.2m.

Meanwhile, the two-year loan deal for Tevez, which now looks set to be
settled by the High Court, could cost United up to £30m in
wages and fees to the player's third-party owners.

United say they have been able to splash the cash on new players this
summer because of the club's better than expected financial
performance over the last season. A club insider said United were
anticipating operating profits to almost double from their 2005-06
levels of £46.3m in 2006-07.

It is understood that the rise is not only down to increased prize
money and TV revenue from United's successful Premiership
campaign and run to the semi-finals of the Champions League. Last
season United took about £3m in match-day revenue from home games
at the 76,000-capacity Old Trafford - a staggering £87m for the 29
matches played there.

The new benefits from the £14m-per-year sponsorship deal with American
insurance giant AIG also boosted the club's coffers. And with
the Premier League's £2.7 billion media deal set to kick in from this
season, incomes and operating profits are set only to increase
further.

Football finance expert Dan Jones, a partner in the sports business
group at Deloitte, explained: "It's very difficult to spot a
weak link at the moment. It's not just a great club with a great
brand. They have a fantastic merchandising operation, the biggest
stadium in the country, they play in the richest and most successful
league, they have a young, exciting team and they are winning
titles again."

But United's summer spending may not be as impressive as it first
appears. They have so far only paid £16m for Nani and Anderson
with the rest dependent on appearances, goals and international caps.
The same is true of the deal for Hargreaves, which is worth an
initial fee of £16.8m to Bayern Munich. With the £5.5m United received
for the sale of Kieran Richardson to Sunderland and the £6m
fee expected for the sale of Gabriel Heinze, the net spend is reduced
to about £21m. (you can further reduce it by the sales of Rossi and
Smith plus the 12m we got for Obi Mikel) It looks even less
extravagant when one
considers the club's spending since the Glazers took over.

Apart from the £18m deal with Spurs for Michael Carrick (another
transfer which involved a much smaller up-front payment), the
Glazers have until this year made no major acquisitions. In fact they
are in the black thanks to the £11m sale of Ruud van
Nistelrooy to Real Madrid and the £12m they received in compensation
from Chelsea to settle the dispute over Nigerian midfielder
John Obi Mikel.

The Glazers arrived at Old Trafford promising Ferguson an annual
transfer kitty of £25m plus an extra £25m for a star player, but
the actual outlay has, until this summer, been zero.

Oliver Houston, from the Manchester United Supporters' Trust, said:
"We are delighted that fresh talent has been brought into the
squad but we are concerned about the way it is being financed.

"This is not the Glazers splashing the cash, this money is coming from
the club. Having won the league, they are making hay while
the sun shines by putting ticket prices up once again to help cover
the borrowings used to finance a takeover nobody wanted."

Is he really paying their unknown kids more than you lot are paying
Anderson, Nani, Rooney, etc?
