JD had it right. Once he filed the paperwork to leave school and enter
the NHL, the Ducks are notified and they have 30-day exclusive rights
to negotiate a contract, trade him, or let him walk and become an UFA.
So let's say the Ducks got the word on the 23rd, they'd have until the
24th of June to come to an agreement with him or figure out their next
step. If he didn't sign with the Ducks, or was traded within the 30 day
window [ in which case the trading team would inherit the exclusivity
rights ], other teams would have from the 24th on to toss him their pitch.
My best guess is since he couldn't reach a contract agreement with
the Ducks when drafted, he goes all the way to ufaville and picks the
team who wants him, and he wants to play for, and signs shortly after
July 1.
I don't know anything about his game, is he the real deal ? And should
Captain Bold [ who makes Stand Pat look like Iron Mike ] go after
him ?
