Wonder if she'll pop up on "The Daily Show". Now that
would be interesting.
- Gary
Is the book mostly pictures and small words?
Depends if Daily was the author.
It cracks me up how the left always attacks the intellect of the right as
if because of their beliefs makes them troglodytes.
Bush was attacked for being a dummy despite the fact he graduated
from Yale and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School, the only
pres to do it.
Palin was a good athlete and went to university on scholarship and
graduated with a BA in Communications ? [ I can't remember, I closed
Wiki and don't feel like going back :-) ].
Of course achievement in school is not necessarily an indication of the
level of intellect, but to suggest she's dumb, given her achievments,is
unfair and silly imo.
I seem to recall Bush having a higher GPA than the ' brilliant ' sexual
predator, perjuring prick Clinton.
Jim
Uh, you know that "The Daily Show" is with Jon Stewart, right? That guy
is actually pretty smart (or, at least, he comes across as smart on the
show, but as he's also one of the writers, he probably contributes at
least some of the material, at least some of which is smart, depending
on whether it's African or European). But still, that's probably a good
idea for a Daily Show skit: create a character "Joe Daily" and have
Stewart dress up like plumber Joe Daily.
> Bush was attacked for being a dummy despite the fact he graduated

I think it's funny how much people seem to value an Ivy League
education. Believe you me, if you have $$$, your toaster could graduate
Yale, or any other Ivy. Okay, maybe you don't need money to get your
toaster to graduate Brown. And the toaster would be the starting center
on the football team, too.
(Full disclosure: I graduated the only Ivy without an NCAA hockey team.
How stupid was *that*? Shoulda gone to SUNY Ithaca, dammit!)
(Nah, that would have been rural hell. Shoulda tried for Columbia: then
I'd have had Columbia hockey *plus* relatively easy access to MSG.)
(Cleanup on aisle five!)
> I seem to recall Bush having a higher GPA than the ' brilliant ' sexual
> predator, perjuring prick Clinton.
Clinton was probably too busy boffing all the women on campus to give
blow jobs to the staff at the registrar's office in exchange for
''modifying'' his grades.
No, wait, that's not fair. It was probably as simple as having Daddy
President ''talk'' to the registrar.

What a bunch of twaddle. Jim said "been attacked like no other",
which is very broad and does include misogynist attacks.
For example, most recently, she was put on Newsweek's cover in shorts.
A picture that was used for some promotional thing for fitness. No,
they couldn't use any of the other pics floating around out there.
Like her or not, she was an elected governor and a VP candidate and
EARNED the right to more than a Barbie doll pic.
Funny that the only sounds from the feminist corner is crickets.
One of the earliest ones was the BS about whether the baby with Down's
Syndrome was hers or belonged to her daughter. Repulsive but, again,
crickets chirped. I don't recall male politicians having their
offspring be the subject of that kind of interest randomly.
Or how about another example: David Letterman making cracks about her
14 yr old daughter having sex with A-Rod and "slutty stewardess look".
It took a few days, but NOW spoke up. Otherwise, crickets they be a
chirping again.
That's just three off the top of my head at 1 am and without googling.
If that's what your definition of feminism is about, glad I have no
part of it as it seems to be failing miserably.
Kim

She was not elected to be VP candidate, she was selected in the hope
that folksiness would swing votes to McCain. She then showed her
unpreparedness for the job. Her reviews as Governor are very mixed -
mostly along partisan lines. Is she angling to be Presidential
candidate in 2012? Based on what I've seen and heard, I'll lose all
faith in American judgment if she is selected or, worse, elected. I
would also be equally horrified if a male folksy person said what

Took her 6 years in 5 schools.
"From the Associated Press: "She began college at Hawaii Pacific
University, a private, nonsectarian school in Honolulu. She attended only as
a freshman during the fall of 1982; transferred to North Idaho College, a

Ample qualification for the job she sought, especially given her foreign

And if she thinks people and dinosaurs co-existed, well, who can argue with

'President of the Harvard Law Review' rings nicely on a resume', don't it?
And the words, 'Juris Doctor magna cum laude'?
I do not know his educational background, just based my opinion on
listening to him and the media reports (always a great trusted
source). That being said Harvard Law Review and Yale MBA is more
impressive than 6 years at multiple schools to get a Communications
degree from a junior college. Again I bring this up as examples of how
I find it difficuly to reconcile intelligence and strident religious
beliefs.

Yeah, but Christopher Hitchens couldn't get elected in the USA.
Actually, there must have been, sometime, an avowed atheist elected there
but I can't think when. My guess is that if you're not a Christian you shut
up about it until the votes are counted.
'Course, Sarah Palin saying that creationism and Genesis should be taught in
schools and that the war in Iraq is a mission from God is maybe a tad over
the top. I think all the American electorate asks is that you go to church
most Sundays and say grace on Thanksgiving.

That actually isn't so bad.
She does a semester in Hawaii, then moves to Idaho where she goes to a
2-year college (better instruction and less money) then graduates from the
University of Idaho with one semester at a College in Alaska.
Basically, it's a completely normal setup with one semester in Hawaii at the
very beginning of her education and one semester in Alaska during it.
Looks to me like someone who failed twice and went to smaller, less
challenging colleges to pick up the credits.

Rev Wright ? I think many religious people have a difficult time
reconciling what reason tells them and what their religion tells
them, and opt to submit to their God.
Others are able to toss out the silly stuff and stick to the core
principles of their beliefs on how to live their lives, do unto others
etc.
I invented a drinking game based on his teleprompters, didn't last two
minutes. He looks at the right prompter for 8 seconds, then to the left,
then to the right, then to the left......
I think Obama is intelligent and thoughtful. Thoughtful often doesn't
mix well with being spontaneous. It does with being studied.
I saw a piece on the campaign. They were talking with his closest advisor
about various issues they encountered, including the controversy over
his association with Rev Wright.
Obama approached him with the notion he should talk about race. He, and
other advisors advised him against talking aboot race. It would just focus
even more attention on Wright. All the other candidates were avoiding talking
about race, and he should too. Obama said no, he thinks he should talk about
race. He told his advisors to get together and think about it and call him
back the next morning. They decided to let him go ahead and do it, they could
get something written which would minimize any potential damage.
So they called him back and gave him the green light, and told him they'd
get to work on it right away. He said nope, he is going to write the speech
himself, and he'd get back to them when it was finished. I can't recall
exactly but I think he wrote it in a day or two.
The speech ' A More Perfect Union ' is thought to have been the most important
event of the campaign, making him the party's nominee and getting him elected
President.

Well, I'm mildly amused by:
"I'm the mayor, I can do whatever I want until the courts tell me I
can't.'" --Sarah Palin, as quoted by former City Council Member Nick
Carney, after he raised objections about the $50,000 she spent
renovating the mayor's office without approval of the city council
http://politicalhumor.about.com/od/sarahpalin/a/palinisms_2.htm
That's just the first link in a Palin search, Kim. She got the role
of VP wrong, didn't understand the role or ownership of either Fannie
Mae or Freddie Mac, claimed her home state produces 20% of the USA's
oil (it produces 3.5%)....take your pick, you can't deny she comes
across very poorly in experience and policy. She's long on folksy
emotional appeal. Can she improve? Probably, but she(and anyone
else) ought to be in Government long enough to understand the issues
before she goes for a senior role.
Like I said, it doesn't prove she's stupid, but I'd like a VP
candidate and possibly Presidential contender to at least understand
facts that constitute governing. Before she runs.

Raised eyebrows here. I assume you mean Obama as President. He's had

Where's it taken, in her office? Is that a desk? Looks like a damned
uncomfortable chair. Why is there a flag on it? Why is there a US Army
banner hanging on the window? What's she holding? Looks like a screen with
an image of a man wearing a bow-tie. The furniture was rearranged by the

the comments are about the education of someone potentially chosen for
a really really really important position. it's probably a fine
education for your average citizen, and actually moving around is a
good thing, imo, but for prez of the us? nope. when she doesn't seem
all that clever AND has an education like that, then comments about
her schooling are gonna happen. just like jim has done with clinton...
There seems to be an issue with the usage of the phot and who has

job with off the charts stress. Look at Clinton and his heart issues.
Obama already looks older.

Which is bullshit (sorry bob). I totally disagree. Education helps
make the person, but it isn't the person.
And Jim is wrong if he believes that as well.
We've all met people who have been educationally brilliant but don't
have enough "smarts" or wits to get across the street safely.
Like I said, liking her is subjective. I take a lot of umbrage with
the attitude that people can't do something because they don't have a
"name brand" education. That's insulting to a lot of people and the

Maybe part of the problem *is* that there have been too many "name

hard decisions, sacrifices and have gone through a little hardship.

I don't get what's wrong with it.
She went to Hawaii for a *semester* and then did her entire education in
Idaho with the exception of one scholarship-driven semester in her home
state.
Doing a 2-year college first is fairly standard.

LOL! well done sir :-)
Maybe, schmaybe. Why speculate when her education is a matter of
public record? As is almost anything, apparently, in the USA.
http://www.slate.com/id/2201332/
As the daughter of a schoolteacher and coach, Palin never doubted she
would go to college. But here the evidence of Palin's thirst for
knowledge grows even more elusive. Palin's college career is so
checkered that her own press spokesperson initially had trouble
getting straight whether, during a period of five years, Palin
attended four colleges (wrong) or five (correct). Palin made the
circuit of three of these colleges with her high-school basketball
teammate Kim "Tillie" Ketchum. In describing the two girls' joint
pursuit of higher education, Johnson makes it sound like a trip to the
ladies' room.
First, Palin and Ketchum (and two other high-school friends) lighted
on the University of Hawaii-Hilo. Drawn by the promise of warmth and
sunshine, the four girls quickly learned that Hilo was, in fact, quite
rainy and immediately either transferred out or declined to register.
(The school has no record Palin ever enrolled.)
Next stop: Hawaii Pacific University in Honolulu, where it was sunnier
and where an aunt of Palin's lived nearby. Palin enrolled in the
business administration program. Two of the four girls got homesick
and returned to Alaska, but Palin and Ketchum stayed, renting an
apartment one block from the ocean in Waikiki. By the end of freshman
year, Palin and Ketchum decided they'd grown tired of this hard-won
sunshine and arranged to transfer out.
Next stop: North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene. (Palin was born in
Idaho.) Here, Johnson writes, they "immersed themselves in a more
traditional college life" and lived in a coed dorm. According to
Ketchum, Palin, who enrolled as a general studies major, remained
interested primarily in sports, but Palin spent a semester working in
a TV production studio. This past June, North Idaho College's Alumni
Association named Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin a distinguished alumna and
invited her to give the commencement address in 2009. But Palin
attended the school for only one year—a spokeswoman for the college
told the Associated Press, "We were not able to track down club
affiliations or anything"—before departing. This time, Ketchum stayed
put.
Next stop: the University of Idaho in Moscow, where today a leadership
award is named for Palin. According to Johnson, Palin transferred here
"to continue her studies in journalism and political science." (Among
Palin's journalism classes, Couric might be surprised to learn, was
"Interviewing.") But it seems likelier that Palin transferred to be
nearer to her brother Chuck, who played running back for the school's
football team. Palin didn't write for the school newspaper—a friend
recalls she was more interested in broadcast journalism—and her
academic adviser, Roy Atwood, does not appear to remember her. After
one year, Palin decided to take some time off.
Next stop: Matanuska-Susitna Community College in Palmer, Alaska, not
far from Palin's hometown of Wasilla. This was apparently to be near
her high-school boyfriend (and future husband) Todd Palin. Johnson
doesn't bother to mention this academic sojourn in her book. Palin
took classes here for one semester.
Next stop: Back to the University of Idaho for three more semesters.
Palin graduated in spring 1987 with a journalism degree.
There's no evidence that Palin encountered any academic difficulties
in any of these places—indeed, Ketchum told Johnson that she and Palin
got "straight A's" at Hawaii Pacific University.
She *isn't* good enough, not for the job she aspires to. It's not a matter
of the names of the schools she went to, it's a matter of the quality of the
education she came away with. Her education left her believing that people
co-existed with dinosaurs, that there's a US Federal agency called the
"Department of Law", that the Vice President is 'in charge of the Senate',
that Alaska provides 20% of America's oil (odd that a Governor of Alaska
would think that).
She's a ditz. She put herself on the biggest stage in the world and has no
business being there.
>

Bullshit. I'm insulting someone who tried, with no qualifications, to become
Vice President of the USA. That doesn't describe a lot of people and if
anyone is insulted by what I said about Sarah Palin, it's their fault, not
mine.

best would be at least 2 and probably more degrees at generally agreed

no one is saying that degree = leadership. 1000s get degrees from good

i wouldn't pass up that person either, if they popped out of the
system somehow, but that's not how western politics work. ditch
diggers generally don't climb up through politicical parties, they
climb down into ditches. people who drop out after grade 10 missed out

that's just dumb.
I think you mean fuck me Kim. And yes I do think there is a vast
difference in work and difficulty when comparing university degrees. I
am far more impressed by someone with a degree in Physics from
Kwantlen College than a Communications Degree from Harvard. I also
don't think this amounts to a hill of beans when it comes to being a
politician.
I think that you review a potential politician's academic background
by their overall achievement (i.e. wouldn't have a great deal of
confidence in someone who failed three times and took 8 years to get
an undergrad (no reference to Palin at all, I went to two schools to
get my undergrad so who am I to judge). And by how involved they were
at school - becoming leaders of societies and groups demonstrating
they have innate desire to lead. I would think that someone who wanted
to enter this life would also be attracted to courses that highlight
policy, economics etc.
All that being said - I think Jim mentioned that a lot A students end
up working for C students - this whole idea that what we did when we
were in our early twenties is reflective of who we are by the time we
get to our forties is just clearly wrong. I worked at the University
of Phoenix for a couple of years and had the pleasure of meeting lots
of smart, bright motivated people I would have been only to happy to
vote for if they ever ran for public office who, for many different
reasons, could not go to University when they were young. They came
there after excelling in their careers and were looking for the piece
of paper that would allow them to take the next step. And that is what
they got for 15K a year - a piece of paper that validated what should
have been obvious from the work they were able to perform.
As for the religious thing, that is a personal bias that I have. I
struggle with it as I know lots bright, articulate people who are very
religious and I am trying to rid myself of this bias. It is no
different than when I have a conversation with these same people they
have trouble understanding how, as an atheist, I am OK with the notion
that I am just worm food in the end, or worse, they make judgements
about my morality and ethics thinking that I can't have any without
believing in God.
Anyhow I have to get back to torturing kittens and looking down at
people with Communications degrees.
Zank you very much, I'll be here all ze veek.

You're out? You think throwing the grenade and heading for the rear

I'm annoyed at your "Fuck you" (I know, so what?) but it is a gutless
response when you can't convince others of your stance. Sarah Palin
has had numerous chances to prove her worthiness. She has never
demonstrated the leadership or judgment you profess to admire. So all
the "maybe she..." and "ditchdigger" references mean nothing re: Sarah
Palin.
Or do you think that if Sarah Palin just said "Fuck you" and "I'm

You don't honestly believe that Obama is as unqualified as Palin? I bet
you'd find most Republicans even disagree with you. Even Jim has
basically admitted he only likes her for her looks. As a red-blooded

As much as I can't stand Kerry, he's vastly more qualified to run the
USA than Palin is. He's far more experienced, better educated (political
science major, as opposed to Palin's communications), and from my
observation, considerably more intelligent.
