Hmmph. First Henry's hand ball and now this. Not a good
week for soccer.

After fifa said there was no way for a replay, henry comes out and says
he feels bad and wants a redo.
What a crock.

V wouldn't do that!

In the extremely unlikely event that they did that, Henry would not
play because an intentional hand ball is an automatic red card + you
miss the next game...

"Extremely unlikely" is right, too. If the ref misses it, it didn't happen.
Just ask Maradona.

It was a double offside and a double hander, what the hell were the ref
and linesmen doing ? What was the nationalities of the officials ?

Regarding the offside: The rules were changed a few years ago so that
simply being in an offside position when the ball was played, is not
automatically whistled (ref's discretion). This was to allow play to
continue if the offside person was not directly involved. In the case,
Henry himself was onside, as you can see him scoot towards the goal
well after the ball was kicked. So you can't fault the ref for that
part of it...

Thanks a lot for the info Joe. I haven't followed soccer for quite awhile and
wasn't aware of that. Good on soccer for implimenting it. I'm passionate
in my dislike of offsides period in any sport, with the exception of set play
sports like football or rugger eg.

The CFL has slud into offsides being ignored with the advent of the receivers
starting 7 or 8 yds behind the line of scrimmage and timing their runs to the
snap of the ball.

Does anyone know where the idea of offsides came from or why ?

there's another video that shows it's not offside when the free kick
is taken from about 30-40 yards out (passing it back like that makes
it ok; you can't be offside behind the ball), but it's the worst
handball miss i've ever seen...

if the ref decided you're not interfering in the play, you're not
offside.

once a guy in a game 15 yards offside, threw his arms in the air and
yelled, "i'm not in the play" as the ball went through his legs.
another of their players ran onto the ball and scored to tie the game
and then they won in the last minute... worst call ever!

Swedish refs.... French president of UEFA and a Swiss president of
FIFA.

I think the whole offsides thing came from rugby. And originally it
was a lot stricter than it is today, something like 3 or 4 opponents
had to be closer to the goal line - today it's only 2 (including the
goalie).

The really, really stupid thing about this - this, is, you might be able
to tell, one of my pet peeves:) - is that nowadays one can be in an
offside position INSIDE the small penalty area and not be offside! (see
Liverpool's "miraculous" comeback on A.C. Milan a couple of years back to
see a good couple of examples)

If anyone can tell me how just being in so close to the goal is not
distracting to the goalie, and therefore relevant to the ongoing play, I
would appreciate it. If the refs were perfect one could argue the goalie
should "discount" the offside player, since he can not legally intervene,
but we do know just how perfect they are...

I agree absolutely. It's obviously dead simple to say after the fact
the "X was not involved in the play", but impossible for a defender to
know before the fact that X does not pose a problem.

I thought for sure you would be commenting on the video link of
Messi's excellent imitation of - and in some ways, improvement upon -
the Original Hand of God play. Really, it took just as good timing and
skill as a real header, and so maybe should be allowed on that basis...
(just kidding...)

Heh - I didn't even see the link... I am so fixated on the hatred of the
new offside thing, you know?
Also, could we get back to the time when playing football was first a
passion and much later than second a business?

Check out the Scottish Premier League. It's such a poverty-stricken
operation that there's not much else to play for but love of the game. Some
teams have less than 10,000-capacity stadiums and that's not all seats,
either. There's still terraces in the league.
There's a degree of parity creeping in, too. It's no longer Celtic, Rangers
and everyone else.
Trouble is, they play at GMT, 8 hours ahead of us.

You'll come for the football, but you'll stay for the Haggis-On-A-
Stick. (I'm making that last part up, but I happened to be in Scotland
last month, where I observed and photographed the following in a
supermarket

My guess, is do a 180 from how you entered he closet. We can deal
with coming out of the closet later.
