players nor do they have much in the way of draft picks and the only players
they would like to move have no-trade or restrictive trade clauses in their
contracts. Homer has painted himself into a very deep, dark corner and he
just better hope that they get this thing turned around and the players
start to play up to their abilities. Although I still think they could use
a veteran winger (Owen Nolan-type?), the fact is that there is enough
talent - when they are all healthy - on the team for them to at least eek
into the playoffs. The elephant in the room is goaltending. Emery has to
recover and regain starters form. As good as Boucher and Leighton have
played, they are career backups for a reason and it is too much to expect
them to provide above average goaltending for a team that needs better than
that to succeed.

I don't think it's time yet to pack it in, and regroup for next year.
Draft picks; I'd like to think Homer knew what he was doing and the
upcoming draft is weak (I can't confirm that it is weak).
On the Farm; currently most in the system are struggling like the
team. Hopefully, a few of these guys can turn it around and get
better over the long term.
Parent Injury; This hurts the weak defensive depth. I kind-of wished
we kept Alberts. Homer has done a good job of finding 5-7th
defenseman types (for cheap).
Goaltending; We should have kept Niity to ride the bench. Bouch
sucks, always has. The team Homer has built is good, but the weak
link is the goalie. Homer did a great job with nothing and got
Emery. Emery had been playing well, no one could guess that he'd get
hurt. I'd be willing to play this out with Emery and see how he
responds after he gets back. If this season ends bad... Sign the
best UFA or Trade for the best goalie available. I never understood -
they traded what they did for Pronger who gets 20+ minutes. But,
skimp on the Goalie who's the last line of defense and out there the
whole game.
If No Playoffs looks likely: I'd consider trading just about anyone
accept Richards, Carter, Giroux, and JVR. Trade for youth, picks, and
to drop salary (for more wiggle room this summer and next year). A
playoff team might be interested in our "untradeables", like Briere.
If Playoffs look likely... Pick up a Veteran Winger; Satan was just
signed for 700K. Talk Shannahan out of retirement (but, I think we'd
need to trade for his rights). Forsburg? - if he looks good during
the Olympics and we are playoff bound... I'd sign him.

Why would Gainey want to do this? They certainly don't need a 3rd string
backup goaltender when both of their goalies are better than Emery.

As demonstrated by the deep playoff runs both Halak and Price have

LOL! Both MTL goalies have better SV%'s and GGA's than Emery. On a
weaker team than than the Ottawa team where Emery has played most of his
career, may I say. They are also both younger (22 and 24) and have
cap-friendly contracts. How on earth does it make sense for MTL to trade
for a Flyers' backup? Montreal's weakness is scoring, not in goal.
I'm not saying either one is a Vezina candidate or anything, but right
now both have slightly better stats than the Flyers' #1 and there is a
healthy competition for the #1 job of their team. The only scenario that
makes sense for moving one of them in their current situation has to
involve a quality offensive forward coming their way.

It makes sense for Montreal to take Briere's contract, to <cough> add their

Briere Reeks of quality, he's offensive, *and* he's french Canadian.

Sure. A straight swap <cough> for Gomez would benefit both teams. The
French Canadian goes to Montreal and the US American to Philly.
